Best Dispersed Camping in North Carolina
Pisgah National Forest offers several free dispersed camping locations with varying levels of accessibility throughout western North Carolina. Most sites require driving on forest service roads with conditions ranging from well-maintained gravel to rough dirt paths that may challenge vehicles with low clearance. The Old NC 105 area provides multiple pull-off sites for tent camping, though reviews indicate increased traffic and occasional safety concerns in recent years.
Uwharrie and Linville Gorge Wilderness areas feature primitive camping options with more amenities than typical dispersed sites. Linville Gorge's western section along NC 128 provides scenic camping on a steep, bumpy road with multiple sites on either side—some positioned near drop-offs with mountain views. Lake Santeetlah in the Robbinsville area offers highly-rated waterfront dispersed sites. A recent review noted, "Beautiful free group camping area with large parking lot. All dirt roads back here." Campers should be prepared for no cell service at most locations, and many areas require visitors to pack out all waste as toilets and trash service are limited.
