Great Smoky Mountains National Park's only frontcountry tent-only campground sits at the northern edge of the park, accessed via a 1.2-mile gravel road off Interstate 40 near the Tennessee-North Carolina state line. Big Creek Campground has just 12 sites, each with a fire ring, picnic table, lantern pole, and a large, flat tent pad. Cars park in a central lot rather than at individual sites, so campers carry gear roughly 100 feet to their spots. No hookups exist, and the 18-foot RV limit is effectively moot since the layout does not accommodate rigs.
The creek is the defining feature here. Multiple sites have direct access to the water, and the sound of moving water carries through the campground consistently. Two creeks run nearby, one larger and one smaller, and the surrounding forest includes mature trees that provide overhead cover. Reviewers note that the bathrooms are generally well maintained and include wheelchair-accessible stalls, though there are no showers. Water spigots are distributed around the campground. Cell service is listed as available, but at least some visitors report difficulty getting a signal near the sites, so downloading maps and making reservations before arrival is worth the effort.
Fishing and creek play are the main on-site draws, but the trailheads adjacent to the campground open up considerably more. Midnight Hole, a 1.5-mile walk, leads to a deep natural swimming pool with boulders for jumping. The Mount Cammerer trail is strenuous but offers open sightlines from the summit. As Myron C. notes, "the other attraction is the whitewater rafting," with outfitters just across the state line running trips on the river near the campground.
Reservations are required and fill up. Summer weekends draw the most visitors, and because the sites are compact, a full campground is noticeable. Dogs are permitted throughout the campground but are not allowed on the Midnight Hole trail. Campers planning a broader Smokies itinerary can explore camping near Great Smoky Mountains National Park for additional options in the surrounding area. For those bringing dogs, pet-friendly camping near Great Smoky Mountains National Park covers alternatives where trail access rules may differ.
"Pads were large and flat and well kept," Nick observed after a recent stay, adding that he will return. For a small, walk-in tent camp inside one of the most visited national parks in the country, Big Creek holds up well under that pressure, and a spot here is worth securing early.
