The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone

Great One Night Stop - Would Have Stayed Longer!

We scheduled a pull through for 1 night last minute due to an unexpected change in plans. We are a full-time traveling family (2 kids - 8 & 13) and 2 English Bulldogs. We have a Class A motorhome and flat tow a Jeep. The campground was beautiful and easy to get in and out of. The sites were level and great size with nice spacing in between. The location was nice too! We did head over to the casino briefly and enjoyed that. We also took a drive to the University of Syracuse to tour the campus. Clean and wonderful park. Would definitely recommend.

    Butternut Hill RV Campground

Choose Butternut Hill for special local events!

This is a small campground set up on the periphery of Butternut Hill farm which is located on the main Route 20 in Bouckville NY.  At the time I submitted my review, I was not able to make edits on the basic campground listing;   I am not sure why the Dyrt platform wouldnt let me update the important details, but you can get more info and make reservations on the campground webpage which is here:

    https://butternuthill.net/

The campground is in a convenient location in Bouckville,  a small upstate NY village with a concentration of numerous antique shops, which is a draw for collectors in the area. There is also a famous Inn and restaurant, the Landmark Inn, which anchors the town, adjacent to a trailhead for a hiking trail along the historic Chenango Canal, an offshoot of the Erie Canal.

The meadows and fields of Butternut Hill are the superb festival setting for several regional events, including several Antique shows, the Central New York Fiber Festival, a craft fair and a car show, events that are scheduled a few times a month throughout the summer.

The campground is adjacent to the festival fields, lining a forest edge with expansive views of the surrounding valley. During special events, vendors and exhibitors have a convenient and inexpensive place to stay that is not far from the exhibit tents and festival fields, but people attending the events can stay there too, or campsites may be reserved at other times through the summer, on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis.

Many of the sites are for RV's, which have electric and water hookups along with a picnic table and fire pit; rates fro these rang $40-50. There are also primitive tent sites which have a grassy tent area and fire pit but no picnic table and cost  $30 per night. There is a cozy log camper cabin available, at a very inexpensive price of $60 per night (bring your own linens). All camping spots are in close walking distance to the bath house, which has water, showers, and bathrooms. (Additional porta potties are set up during festival events.)

I was there during the Fiber Festival, and I was impressed at how well organized the programing was, and how clean everything was despite large attendance. In addition, it rained really hard one day of the event, and though the access roads got a little muddy, the campsites seem well drained and did not get muddy. The campsites all back to the woods on the west side, so this serves as a good windbreak too.

The campground office has some basic camping supplies available, but an advantage of being there during a festival event was a nice food tent and a variety of food trucks offering delicious fare!  If you were coming from a distance to attend one of the local special events, this is a good place to stay, though of course busy during the day. If you wanted to camp here at a non event time, you would find it to be a quiet pastoral location with access to some hiking and fishing spots in close proximity. For staying in the area, the camper cabin would be a great all-weather option if you can get it!

    Cherry Grove Campground

    Very nice small campground

We stayed at Cherry Grove in May ‘23 with a Fifth wheel camper. The park is very well maintained.  Sites are good sized and packed gravel.  WiFi is very good, as is cell service from Verizon and T-Mobile. It Most of the campground is seasonal, but all of the campers were friendly.

    Green Lakes State Park Campground

Good experience - lovely swimming area and lakes!

We had a great stay at this park. We enjoyed biking and exploring the lovely blue-green lakes. The swimming area was awesome. We were on the edge of a the large RV section in Pinewoods with premium sites. However, they are all in the bright sun - no shade. It was great having the camp store so close!

    Green Lakes State Park Campground

Green Lakes is a model state park

This is a great example of what a state park should be. It not only preserves a place of unique biological diversity and geologic interest, it is also well set up and well maintained to maximize low impact outdoor recreation and environmental education. A new state of the art regional environmental education center is being built now that will open in spring, as well as new handicapped access kayaking docks that complement Accessible trails and campsites throughout the park. This is a great destination for families, handicapped campers, and natural history enthusiasts. There are several campgrounds, one is large and open and meant for large RVs, others are drive-in forested tent sites or trailer sites with hookups, and several walkin sites. There is also a colony of rustic camper cabins. The campgrounds have brand new restroom facilities and playgrounds, and the main lake has a new beach house. The lake is a fascinating meromictic lake with clear calcium-rich waters that are not only pristine and beautiful to look at, but also great for swimming and snorkeling as the waters are crystal clear and very deep. There are hiking trails, paved bike trails, a nature preserve for bird watching at Round Lake, a golf course, and great kayaking or canoeing. It is also located right next door to the Erie Canal State Park for those who want to hike or bike the historic Erie Canal. Though you might expect a park like this to be in a remote location, it is actually just a short distance east of the suburbs of the Syracuse metro area, so it is an easy park to get to, plus staying there also provides easy access to stores for supplies, or access to local cultural activities or restaurants for those who want that. One of my favorite state parks in New York!

    Delta Lake State Park Campground

    Delta Lake State Park

A very nice, tidy campground located on a peninsula jutting into Delta Lake in Central NY. Our site was level and large enough for our 22ft Airstream, a 4-person tent, pop-up canopy, and 2 vehicles. A picnic table and fire ring were on the site. Our site had 30A electrical service. The surface of the site was dirt with some small stones…no grass. Trees surrounded the site on 3 sides, providing some privacy and a place to hang a hammock. We were able to carry our paddle boards to the lake, walking less than 200ft through some woods.

    Junius Ponds

    Great Campground

Well maintained and friendly staff. Clean facilities. Most sites can accommodate large rigs with full hookups. Reservations recommended especially during summer weekends. Well priced $42 per night for full hookups. Campground offered two free hours of WiFi which is week but is currently being updated. This campground offers a well maintained-non heated pool although costs $2 per person to use even for campers. Overall excellent campground

Guide to Phoenix

The camping areas surrounding Phoenix, New York sit near Lake Ontario's southern shore, where spring thaw can create muddy conditions from April through early May. Most RV parks in this region operate seasonally from mid-April through mid-October due to harsh winter conditions. The elevation ranges from 400-500 feet above sea level, with sites often positioned to maximize lake views or provide shelter from prevailing winds.

What to do

Lake access activities: Brennan Beach Campground offers direct access to Lake Ontario with swimming areas and beach activities during summer months. "We went and it is a must see while there. Basically 15 minutes from the campground. That is by RV as we had no toad this time. Mexico Point is another close attraction to see as well," reports Robert M.

Fishing opportunities: Several campgrounds near Phoenix provide access to salmon fishing spots during fall runs. "Salmon River Falls" mentioned by reviewers at Brennan Beach Campground is worth visiting, located just 15 minutes from the main camping areas.

Golf outings: Streamside RV Park & Golf Course features a 12-hole course surrounding the camping area. "There is a 12 hole golf course that surrounds the campground," notes B M. The course attracts many seasonal campers who enjoy combining camping with golfing.

Hiking trails: Many campgrounds connect to local trail systems, including historic canal paths. Near Butternut Hill RV Campground, visitors can access "a trailhead for a hiking trail along the historic Chenango Canal, an offshoot of the Erie Canal."

What campers like

Large site spacing: The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone receives consistent praise for its well-designed layout. "Spacious FHU sites. Pull thru and back ins," notes Boomer B. Another camper mentions, "The sites were level and great size with nice spacing in between."

Swimming pools: Several RV sites near Phoenix, New York offer pool amenities during summer months. "Bathrooms/showers were clean. Site we stayed at had full hook ups. Very nice camp store, pools, playground, and restaurants," reports Becky at Brennan Beach.

Quiet atmosphere: Lake Bluff RV Park gets high marks for its peaceful setting. "We had a huge site near a little stream, overall the campground isn't very big with lots of seasonals," writes Keri. The campground maintains a family-friendly environment with organized activities.

Convenience to attractions: The Villages RV Park provides "24 hour shuttles to the casino 5 minutes away, yet quiet and beautifully maintained," according to April L., making it popular for those wanting entertainment options beyond camping.

What you should know

Seasonal operating schedules: Most campgrounds near Phoenix close by mid-October. For example, Woonton Family Farms and similar small operations may have limited availability outside peak season. "We had an excellent stay at the farm of the Woonton Family Farms with our RV, it was a cozy and beautiful campsite with personal attention of the owner," reports Willemien V.

Variable pricing: Costs for camping vary widely between parks. Some tent sites at premium locations can run $70 per night, while more basic RV setups average $37.50-50 per night for full hookups.

Noise considerations: Some campgrounds have nearby train tracks or highways that create background noise. As one reviewer at The Villages RV Park notes, "The only real negatives would be the proximity to some railroad tracks, which can be somewhat active and very audible in some spots."

Beach conditions: Lake Ontario water levels fluctuate, affecting beach access. "The lake level flooding a few yrs ago ruined the sandy beach, but it's still a great view," explains Tim W. about Ontario Shores.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Ontario Shores RV Park provides open areas for children to play. "Open field to walk the dog or for children. Lake Ontario a short walk away," mentions Tim W. Several parks organize weekend activities specifically for children.

Playground access: Lake Bluff offers "a nice game room pool, air hockey, video games. There is a change machine too," according to Sara H., making it suitable for families with older children who need entertainment options.

Swimming options: Several campgrounds feature both pools and lake swimming. "Spent time at the beach which is also very nice. Sites are close together, but kind of what is expected at an RV resort," notes Becky about Brennan Beach.

Seasonal activities: "Kids activities are great. Even with COVID they have stuff to keep them busy," reports Victoria about Lake Bluff, indicating organized programming continues throughout the camping season.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: At Butternut Hill RV Campground, "The campsites all back to the woods on the west side, so this serves as a good windbreak too," notes Janet R. This protects against prevailing winds common near Lake Ontario.

Hookup availability: Most campgrounds offer full hookups including 50-amp service for larger RVs. "We scheduled a pull through for 1 night last minute due to an unexpected change in plans. We are a full-time traveling family (2 kids - 8 & 13) and 2 English Bulldogs. We have a Class A motorhome and flat tow a Jeep," reports Jen O. about The Villages RV Park.

Level sites: Streamside RV Park offers back-in sites long enough for trucks to remain hitched to trailers. "All sites are a back in site yet it was long enough for us to stay hooked up. We had full hook up," notes B M.

Road conditions: After heavy rain, access roads may become muddy, but campsite drainage is generally good. "It rained really hard one day of the event, and though the access roads got a little muddy, the campsites seem well drained and did not get muddy," according to a reviewer at Butternut Hill.
