Darien Lakes State Park Campground provides accommodations for equestrians seeking horse camping near Holland, New York. The campground operates seasonally from May through mid-October with regular maintenance ensuring clean facilities. The park features multiple accommodation options from rustic tent sites to cabins and yurts with varying levels of amenities.
What to do
Disc golf course access: The park maintains a relatively new disc golf course that provides an alternative recreation option when not on horseback. "This park is a nicely kept, clean and quiet gem. I live local to the area and still find a time to setup the tent and enjoy some peace and quiet away from the noise of daily life. There is a fairly new Frisbee golf course as well," notes Jeremy H. from Darien Lakes State Park Campground.
Winter backpacking options: The Conservation Trail remains accessible during winter months for those looking to extend their camping season beyond summer. "We did some winter camping here. We backpacked into the lean to along the Conservation Trail. It was in good condition and we had a large clearing for activities. No issues with animals," reports Leah W., highlighting off-season opportunities.
Regional attraction visits: The campground's location provides convenient access to Niagara Falls as a day trip option. "We stayed at this campground when we went to Niagara falls. It's a small campground but has clean bath houses an a relaxing atmosphere. Not much to do but fish or walk trails but that's how we like it. Nice park to go to after a long day at the falls," shares Dawn T.
What campers like
Quiet weekday atmosphere: Many visitors appreciate the peaceful environment, particularly on weekdays when the campground sees lower occupancy. "Enjoyed grassy areas and mature trees and small lake. Sites well spaced. Clean and well maintained. We were there on a weekday, told weekends are busy. Not buggy," notes Carol B. from Red House Area — Allegany State Park State Park.
Clean, updated facilities: The park maintenance receives consistent positive feedback from repeat visitors. "I've camped here since I was a little kid. Always clean and well maintained. Also has a nice beach and all newly remodeled bathrooms," states Jim S., highlighting recent facility improvements.
Balance of nature and entertainment: The park's location offers both natural surroundings and proximity to entertainment options. "If you like a park that is near an amusement park and not that quiet this is for you. You are still out in nature and have those aspects but you dont get that lost into nature here to me," explains Adam R.
What you should know
Site spacing considerations: While the park offers well-spaced sites, some equestrian campers may need to plan for specific loops that better accommodate trailers and portable corrals. "The campground is quiet and spacious. The facilities are in need of updates but are definitely in working order," notes Bret J. from Cherry Creek Campground and Recreation.
Weekend crowding: The campground experiences significantly higher usage on weekends compared to weekdays. "Usually pretty crowded but still such a fun place to camp!" shares Ashley B., suggesting that equestrians book well in advance for weekend stays.
Seasonal water levels: The small lake within the park may have reduced water levels during maintenance periods, which can affect water-based recreation options. "At the time I went (May, 2018) the lake was reduced to about a third of its water due to maintenance, so the kayaks we brought didn't leave the roof of the car," reports Sara C.
Tips for camping with families
Children's programming: Parents should check the schedule for ranger-led activities that provide educational opportunities. "This place is great for family camping with tons of different activities offered around the park," explains Tina S. from Allegany State Park.
Multiple recreation options: Families can combine horse activities with other outdoor pursuits. "We've been coming to this campground since I was a kid, and love the fact that you can have the amenities of home away from home. There is so much to do there including catching crayfish, fishing, going to the amplitheater, hiking, and so much more," recommends Ashley V.
Entertainment for various ages: The nearby attractions supplement the natural park activities. "Kids and parents will love this place as has lots of entertainment for all ages," advises Wesley J., referring to both the state park and nearby theme park options.
Tips from RVers
Site selection for trailers: Horse owners with RVs and trailers should specifically request larger sites to accommodate both vehicles. "The tent and RV sites are nice, clean. The trees offer great shade and privacy between most sites," notes Nick O.
Extended-stay planning: For those considering longer horse camping trips, the park offers suitable amenities. "Cabins range from rustic to downright homey. The Red House Administration building is a great central location to meet up with other camping families. Staff is super friendly & helpful," shares Mark S. about the nearby Allegany State Park, which offers similar services for extended stays.
Alternative accommodations: During peak season when sites fill quickly, consider the cabin options. "Cabins are pretty large and have some great surrounding areas, like creeks right next to the cabins," mentions Tina S., providing insights for those who prefer more substantial shelter for multi-day equestrian activities.
