    Delta Lake State Park Campground

Perfect place to unwind after Boilermaker

We stayed here a while ago while running the Boilermaker, at the time we had outfitted our twelve passenger van with a bed and used the electric hookups for our fans and chargers. We had a fire pit and picnic table as well. It was a beautiful spot on the Delta Reservoir, had plenty of trees and access to the reservoir for wading and swimming. The bath houses were clean and centrally located. Nice little no-frills campsite.

    Southwick Beach State Park Campground

    Not for me

Unfortunately when we arrived at southwick the rangers & staff had all gone home so we were unable to get a map or check in. We went to our camp site & there were people playing very loud music until about 12am, no rangers around the say anything about quiet hours so I had to. Sites are on top of eachother & there’s no boarders inbetween, fine for some people but not for me. After it rained one night our site & others around us were completely flooded. The beach area & bathhouses we’re nice though so that helped the stay not be a complete wash

    Delta Lake State Park Campground

    Delta Lake State Park

Delta Lake State Park sits at the foothills of the Adirondack Park, just outside Rome, New York. Pretty and well-kempt, Delta Lake is a nice option for those looking to stay close to home and within proximity to civilization. You can enjoy the great outdoors, while only being a few miles away from a restaurant or grocery store.

The campground isn‘t the best I’ve experienced, a bit on the crowded side-similar to a woodsy suburb- but this could have been distinctive to Loop A where I stayed. I stayed in site 35 and was intermixed with all the campers and RV’s, so it got a bit noisy. Not that restful, secluded experience I typically go for, but I should have planned further in advance.

However, what the park lacked in terms of its campground, it totally made up for in its beach, swimming and picnic areas! This place was awesome for hosting a birthday party for my niece and relaxing at the beach/ day facilities. They have plenty of picnic tables, charcoal grills, a huge beach and locker rooms. This is really a great place to spend a day with your family!

    Selkirk Shores State Park Campground

    NYS's best kept secret

Selkirk is quiet and peaceful. Electricity is available on many sites. The beach is good for children and they have a great recreation program for the kids. While we were there they had a reptile exhibit with huge snakes and crocodiles, another day they had tie dyeing t-shirts, other days they had bingo(candy was the prize), exercises, and crafty things to make. Firewood is available on site, with delivery if you buy 1/4 cord and up.

    Delta Lake State Park Campground

    Great spot for the night!!

We had a waterfront hookup ! So pretty especially in the morning with the sunrise. The road to get in was for the most part well taken care of. It was pretty quiet especially after quiet hours everyone was very respectful. It got really windy at night which was nice to keep the bugs away. Friendly neighbors as well. There’s a few steps down to a gravel beach and an expansive view of the delta lake. There were bathrooms in the middle of our loop which was great and easy to walk to and it was very clean. There is a water full station when you enter but there are also a couple water spigots in our loop.

    Delta Lake State Park Campground

    Nice but BUSY

This was our first time here, and we were looking forward to a relaxing visit. The sites were very large and well spaced out, with a beautiful fire ring. The bathrooms were clean. This campground got a 3/5 mainly because quiet hours are not enforced. Unfortunately, people were up blaring radios until approximately 3 am, being roudy. At approximately 2 am, someone decided it would be a good idea to do burnouts with their diesel truck, and went around the camp loop twice, doing just that. Vehicles were driving by the campsites all night long. This is naturally not entirely the campgrounds fault, but it was unfortunate to be misled by the campground rules. On a positive note, the campground is dog friendly, in certain areas, with proof of rabies vaccination, of course. Overall, I would say that this campground is geared more toward the RV and trailer crowd.

    Green Lakes State Park Campground

Green Lakes is a model state park

This is a great example of what a state park should be. It not only preserves a place of unique biological diversity and geologic interest, it is also well set up and well maintained to maximize low impact outdoor recreation and environmental education. A new state of the art regional environmental education center is being built now that will open in spring, as well as new handicapped access kayaking docks that complement Accessible trails and campsites throughout the park. This is a great destination for families, handicapped campers, and natural history enthusiasts. There are several campgrounds, one is large and open and meant for large RVs, others are drive-in forested tent sites or trailer sites with hookups, and several walkin sites. There is also a colony of rustic camper cabins. The campgrounds have brand new restroom facilities and playgrounds, and the main lake has a new beach house. The lake is a fascinating meromictic lake with clear calcium-rich waters that are not only pristine and beautiful to look at, but also great for swimming and snorkeling as the waters are crystal clear and very deep. There are hiking trails, paved bike trails, a nature preserve for bird watching at Round Lake, a golf course, and great kayaking or canoeing. It is also located right next door to the Erie Canal State Park for those who want to hike or bike the historic Erie Canal. Though you might expect a park like this to be in a remote location, it is actually just a short distance east of the suburbs of the Syracuse metro area, so it is an easy park to get to, plus staying there also provides easy access to stores for supplies, or access to local cultural activities or restaurants for those who want that. One of my favorite state parks in New York!

    Kayuta Lake Campground and Marina

Right at the gateway to the Adirondacks, a real gem of a campground!

We've visited this campground 6 times since we found it 4 years ago, and keep coming back for more. Easy access, great staff, well kept facilities and a beautiful setting. What more can you ask for?

The sites themselves are a good size. They aren't huge, but you'll have enough room to get creative with your parking. Plenty of trees to hang your hammocks on. All sites have a picnic table and fire pit, and for the most part are fairly level. Not all sites have full hookups, some are just power, some are only grey water, and some are full. There are a lot of full timers here, so the grounds can look fuller than they really are as most often the majority of the full time sites are not occupied. But on big weekends, when everyone shows up, its still not too crowded.

The facilities are modern and well kept. The only issue I had was the shower heads are at about 5'2" above the floor. I'm 6' tall. So that kinda sucked. But the pressure and temp were great, so its still a win. Plus, camping isn't really about taking showers anyways, right? Other than that the bath houses are well maintained and stocked. And they are never more than a quick walk from your camper.

Did I mention there is a pool? There is. And its HEATED. Which is nice, as we often get up there early or late in the season, and a heated pool is a necessity. There's also a good sized playground, an arcade, and lots of games for kids (and adults) to play like basketball, shuffle board, corn hole or horse shoes.

They have a great little shop there too, with just about everything you'd need to make a great weekend. And the staff is fantastic as well. The river is a little weird to get to, but totally worth it for kayaking, sailing or whatever kind of boating you want to do.

So that's a lotta Pro's. I should list some Cons too, to keep it fair.

    • The sites are kinda close, so you don't get a ton of privacy, and you can really hear what's going on next door.
    • The roadways can get a little tight between the trees, and can make for some interesting backing in.
    • Also, the roadways are mostly one-way, which can make getting creative with your trailer landing position tough.
    • They offer free wifi.
    • Not all sites have full hookups
    • Personally I'm not a fan of such an abundance of full-time units. But at least they're well kept (for the most part) and it is a few degrees shy of looking like a trailer park. You know what I mean.

Check them out, and they'll become one of your favorites too!

Yogi Bears Jellystone Park Camp Resort at Mexico

One of the best campgrounds for kids of all ages!

Quickly becoming one of our favorite campgrounds! So much to do here for the little ones, and so much beauty to soak in for us older ones! The staff here is excellent, and are always willing to do what they can to make sure you're having a great stay. The setting is absolutely gorgeous. Well treed, nicely sized spaces and fairly easy access for large rigs. Bathrooms are well spaced and plentiful, and well maintained. The showers are actual showers, and are taller than I am (which is nice!). So many activities for the kids, a great pool, mini-golf, parades, just non stop action to keep them going and tire them out! Highly recommended! Well worth the short drive up from Syracuse, or a longer drive from elsewhere!

Guide to Central Square

Glamping destinations near Central Square, New York offer accommodations ranging from basic cabins to fully equipped yurts and cottages. The region sits within the eastern Lake Ontario plains at approximately 400-450 feet elevation, with a climate characterized by lake effect weather patterns that bring significant snowfall in winter but create pleasant summer camping conditions from May through October. Water features dominate the landscape with numerous lakes and rivers providing recreational opportunities within a 30-minute drive of Central Square.

What to do

Beach activities at Lake Ontario: Brennan Beach Campground provides direct beach access with swimming areas during peak season. "Spent time at the beach which is also very nice. Sites are close together, but kind of what is expected at an RV resort," notes camper Becky.

Fishing opportunities: Selkirk Shores State Park Campground sits along Lake Ontario with prime fishing spots. A visitor comments, "Lake Ontario has great fishing. The beach is smaller than it was before now that it is guarded."

River exploration: At Yogi Bears Jellystone Park Camp Resort, campers can wade in the Salmon River. One reviewer shares, "The river is awesome, wading, catching crayfish, cooling off. Staff were consistently friendly. Sites were flat, easy to level travel trailer."

Mini-golf and activities: Many campgrounds offer structured activities for visitors. "There are a lot of activities for the kids to do, from mini golf, jumping pillow, water balloon fights and much more," reports Carrie N. about Jellystone Park.

Boat rentals: Several parks offer affordable boat rentals to explore the waters. "You can rent a kayak and enjoy the beautiful lake. There are miles of trails to explore," mentions a Cindy H. about Green Lakes.

What campers like

Unique lake waters: Green Lakes State Park Campground features distinctive meromictic lakes. "This park is beautiful and very clean. The water is Crystal clear and very blue, you will think you are in the Caribbean Islands," explains Kenneth S.

Comfortable shower facilities: While basic, shower accommodations vary by campground. "The bathrooms have been remodeled and most are private with a toilet, shower and sink which makes this a wonderful family campground," notes Sheri S.

Organized activities: Campgrounds near Central Square excel at scheduled entertainment. "This campground offers so much for people of all ages: Crafts, Games, Activities, Playground, Pool, Bouncy pillow, Twice Daily wagon rides with Yogi and Boo Boo, Bike parades, River access, Fishing, Tubing, Lounging," lists Cory W. about Jellystone.

Privacy options: While many sites are open, some campgrounds offer secluded spots. "Sites 66 and 67 are the exception that we saw, they're off together to the side and would be a good choice for two groups camping together," mentions Laura M. about Selkirk Shores.

What you should know

Shower facilities vary: Be prepared for different shower setups. "As clean as the bathrooms are, the showers still suck. I'll never understand why parks use the misting shower heads," notes Chelsea B. about Green Lakes.

Seasonal limitations: Most glamping options close by mid-October. A reviewer at Ontario Shores RV Park explains, "Lake Ontario a short walk away, the lake level flooding a few yrs ago ruined the sandy beach, but it's still a great view."

Reservation requirements: Many popular sites fill quickly, especially in loops C and D at Selkirk Shores. "Apparently C and D are always booked and full, because people like that it's closest to the beach trail, the playground, and the camp store," advises Laura M.

Pet restrictions: Some areas limit where dogs can go. "They don't allow dogs on the beach," mentions a reviewer about Brennan Beach Campground.

Maintenance concerns: Facilities may show wear in late season. "Signs/photo ops were crooked/loose/broken. Planted annual flowers were dead, overgrown with weeds. Miniature golf holes were falling apart," reports a visitor to Jellystone.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Whispering Woods Campground offers yurt glamping close to Central Square, New York with family-friendly options. "We camped there a few times, very people friendly place!" shares Arnie T.

Camp loops selection: Choose your campground section wisely. "This campground is 4 different loops- A loop is like the loop for people here for fishing, B loop is the mellower crowd, and C and D were our nightmares: mass chaos, children running amok, loud groups," advises Laura M.

Water safety considerations: Most swimming areas have restrictions. "The swimming is available at the large beach. You can rent a kayak and enjoy the beautiful lake," notes Cindy H.

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature playground equipment. "Beach also has a great playground for kids that is perfect for play and swim. Dogs are welcome," shares Kelly J. about Selkirk Shores.

Recreation programs: Look for campgrounds with structured activities. "They had a reptile exhibit with huge snakes and crocodiles, another day they had tie dyeing t-shirts, other days they had bingo(candy was the prize), exercises, and crafty things to make," reports Colleen S.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Travel Resorts of America Bass Lake Resort offers full hookups for RVs year-round. "Awesome resort. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Very peaceful and quiet," reports Karen S.

Site selection: Choose sites based on your privacy preferences. "The sites are a good size with water and electric on each site. There is a dumping station to use, some sewer sites," explains Heather R. about Treasure Isle RV Park.

Dump station access: Most campgrounds provide dump stations. "There's a nice new dump station with several dumps and potable water. Good cell reception for both Verizon and ATT," notes Laura M.

Leveling requirements: Site terrain varies by campground. "Sites are level and spacious. Open field to walk the dog or for children," mentions Tim W. about Ontario Shores RV Park.

RV size limitations: Larger rigs find accommodation at several parks. "The setting is absolutely gorgeous. Well treed, nicely sized spaces and fairly easy access for large rigs," shares Michael O. about Jellystone.
