Arcadian Pastures Equine campground provides primitive camping facilities for horse owners in upstate New York. Located approximately 30 miles west of Castleton-on-Hudson, this campground sits in the foothills of the northern Catskills region at an elevation of roughly 700 feet. The campground experiences typical northeastern seasonal variations with warm summers and cold winters, making late spring through early fall the optimal camping period.
What to do
Trail riding access: Riders at North-South Lake Campground can enjoy nearby bridle trails that connect to the Catskill Escarpment trail system. "Awesome access to the Catskill Escaprment trail from here," notes Maribeth W., who frequently visits the area for day rides.
Swimming opportunities: During summer months, equestrians looking to cool off can trailer horses to nearby swimming areas. "One of my favorite swimming spots. I go there almost every year to go swimming with my family and friends and it's always a good time," shares Lizz H. about North-South Lake.
Hiking with views: Combine camping with scenic hikes at Betty Brook Camp, where trails follow streams and climb to ridgelines. Robert B. notes, "Love to camp here all year long have been coming to the area for a couple of decades now. Remote. Sometimes you never see anyone."
What campers like
Spacious, private sites: Many equestrian-friendly campgrounds in the region offer well-separated camping areas. "Campsites are spacious, shady, and had good separation between the neighboring sites which we enjoyed," notes Nancy W. about Moreau Lake State Park Campground.
Clean facilities: Even at primitive campgrounds, basic amenities are well-maintained. "The restrooms were clean and had showers, which we did not expect," reports Brittany W. about her experience camping near popular horse trails.
Proximity to streams: Many campers appreciate waterside campsites for both humans and horses. "You camp on the stream. There is a couple of spots," explains Robert B. about Betty Brook Camp, where horses can access water for drinking and cooling off.
What you should know
Limited facilities: Most equestrian camping areas near Castleton-on-Hudson offer minimal amenities. "This is dry camping so there are no hook-ups but there are restrooms and shower," explains Nancy W. from Moreau Lake State Park Campground.
Reservation requirements: Many sites require advance booking, particularly during peak riding seasons. At primitive locations like Betty Brook Camp, spots fill quickly on weekends: "It is rather remote, but it is right along West kill road. There's a stream alongside it, a fire pit, and a town about 8 mi away," advises Peter.
Trailer size limitations: Access roads to equestrian sites can be narrow with tight turns. "I would not recommend this for large trailers. The site is fairly small," warns Peter about Betty Brook Camp, where larger horse trailers may struggle with access.
Tips for camping with families
Look for dual recreation options: When camping with children and horses, select campgrounds offering diverse activities. "Hiking, biking, swimming, boat/canoe/paddleboard rentals. No hookups but does have dump station. Pets allowed. We really like it here," shares nancy K. about Moreau Lake State Park Campground.
Consider cabin options: For mixed groups where not everyone wants to tent camp, look for hybrid accommodations. "The beach area seems to be a draw for people so the summer camping season is probably packed," notes Nancy W., suggesting facilities that can accommodate both equestrians and non-riders.
Plan for varied experience levels: Select trail systems appropriate for all riders in your group. "The park has a large number of hiking trails for every level of outdoorsman and the staff is friendly and helpful," explains Robert L., highlighting options for beginners and experienced riders alike.
Tips from RVers
Site selection for trailers: When bringing horses and RVs, carefully research access routes. "The road to our campsite was paved and in good shape but there were a few tight spots because of the trees that make it tricky for a big rig (Loop A seems to be the best for big-rigs)," advises Nancy W. about Moreau Lake State Park Campground.
Generator regulations: Equestrian campers should verify noise policies. "Generators are allowed but not too many people were using them. The few other campers around that used them were mindful of quiet hours," reports Nancy W., noting the consideration needed when camping with horses in shared areas.
