Best Cabin Camping near Ocate, NM

Rustic cabins near Ocate, New Mexico provide accommodations at several established campgrounds within reasonable driving distance. Agua Piedra Campground in the Carson National Forest features historic log cabins with basic amenities, offering a more primitive cabin experience with picnic tables and fire pits but limited electrical services. Angel Nest RV Retreat provides more modernized cabin options with full hookups, showers, and running water. Las Vegas/New Mexico KOA Journey offers cabin rentals with heating for cold nights, making them suitable for off-season stays. "Our camping cabin needed chinking, I could see light through the logs. Happily there was a heater for the cold rainy night," noted one visitor about the KOA cabins.

Options range from tiny log cabins to spacious family-sized layouts. The KOA cabins in Las Vegas tend to be smaller but functional, while 4K River Ranch and Red River RV provide more substantial cabin accommodations. Most cabins permit pets, though specific pet policies vary by location. Pendaries RV Resort cabins remain available year-round, while others like Road Runner RV Resort operate seasonally from May through October. According to one visitor at 4K River Ranch, their cabins offer excellent amenities: "They've got RV sites, apartments, cabins and a beautiful penthouse in the center of town overlooking the town and mountain."

Most rustic cabins include basic furniture and beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between properties - KOA cabins typically offer minimal cooking options, while larger resort cabins at Pendaries and Angel Nest may include more complete kitchenettes. Several campgrounds with cabins operate small on-site markets, including Pendaries RV Resort and Golden Eagle RV Park, though selection is limited to essentials. Firewood is available for purchase at many locations with cabin rentals, particularly at Agua Piedra Campground and Angel Nest RV Retreat. A recent review noted that at Las Vegas KOA, "They provide a full breakfast for a very nominal cost which got us going and out quickly."

    Agua Piedra Campground

    Great Northern New Mexico Camp

We stayed at this site on the way back to Texas from our Colorado trip this summer. This is a great National Forest Campground south of Taos in the Carson Forest. The campground is just off the highway and situated in a beautiful mountain pine forest and next to a great trout stream. You have great shade during the hotter summer months. It’s far enough away from the highway that you don’t hear the traffic. It has a huge meadow and group camp site which look fantastic. The individual sites have some privacy between the sites and come equipped with fire pits and picnic tables. We made a reservation but the camp had a number of open sites in the peak summer season. The highlight here is the proximity of great hiking to nearby lakes and fishing in the trout stream. They had great facilities including clean pit toilets and some historic log cabins. They have a camp host and the sites accommodate tents and smaller vans and campers. I would give this another visit on our next trip to NM.

The whole crew seemed to be experienced. friendly, accommodating and right on top of operations. Clean shower and common areas with a homemade breakfast available too! It’s off season but the core functions are solid so I could see another stop here to soak in the sun and the pool.

    Las Vegas/New Mexico KOA Journey

Top notch beauty, but needs some work

The Las Vegas, NM KOA was one of the prettiest KOA settings I have seen. It is a stunning location, and the town of Las Vegas is charming. The owners are were kind and helpful. That being said, this property is tired and in need of some maintenance and love. Our camping cabin needed chinking, I could see light through the logs. Happily there was a heater for the cold rainy night. The shower house was in great need of an update. Breakfast was delicious, but really slow as there was only one kind gentleman doing the cooking and there were several groups to feed. Some people cancelled their orders and left rather than staying to eat.

All that said, I would stay here again. The people were kind, the cost was reasonable, and it still beats a tent in the rain when passing through on a long road trip. And as I said at that start - it is beautiful. My kids loved the playground.

This was our base of operations for a visit to Fort Union National Historic Site.

    4K River Ranch

Best campground in Red River, NM

4k River Ranch is the best campground in Red River. They've got RV sites, apartments, cabins and a beautiful penthouse in the center of town overlooking the town and mountain. The Red River runs through the park, so you can fish in it or in the stocked private pond. The have 50amp & 30amp sites. Pull-thrus, back-ins & buddy sites. WiFi is good for checking emails and browsing websites. Very nice bathrooms with showers plus a laundry room. The staff is fantastic and they've got a really nice new office/store. They're building new cabins along the Red River plus a new pavilion for family gatherings along with a playground for the kids.

    Questa Lodge & RV Resort

RV park with a campground feel

Nice park nestled at the foot of the mountains and on the banks of the Red River. Nicely landscaped with two ponds and a river walk. Location is great for visiting Rio Grande del Norte NM and the Wild Rivers Recreation Area. Just north of Taos too. Nicely shaded, level sites with full hookups. Nice picnic table and grill. Might be a little tight for big rigs, but my little Casita was quite happy. Very friendly folks in the office. Clean laundry and restroom. My site backed up to the river and the sound of the rushing water was the perfect lullaby.

    Coyote Creek State Park Campground

    Another New Mexico Gem

Coyote Creek is a great place to escape for the weekend. The fishing is great, scenery is amazing, and it is quiet! This campsite is located in a valley along a small creek, if it is a drought year, there won't be much water. There aren't many trees around the creek so it doesn't feel as "foresty" but it is still in the mountains. The bathrooms/showers are really nice as well but located quite a ways from the creek. There are camping spots up by the bathroom as well that have more coverage and privacy. As usual with New Mexico camping, bring everything you need because stores are not close by and usually close early in the day. The road to get to coyote creek is really narrow and windy so allow plenty of time to get there before dark.

    Coyote Creek State Park Campground

    We loved our stay here

This was our first outing in a truck and camper shell. Even though it was the weekend (a couple days after) of the Fourth of July we got a good spot and there was actually empty spaces next to us. I think all the sites have their own picnic tables and many of them have shelters over the tables. This came in handy since it rained while we were there. There is a large field that gets mowed and great for kids to play. There’s also a small playground. The stream was nice and my boyfriend caught a couple of fish. There’s also a small trail that goes up the mountain and around the campground. It was a fairly easy trail for us 20-something’s and we did it in about an hour or shorter. We really liked their main bathroom! It had heaters that kept it warm and they were really clean. Next time we will try out their showers. We really enjoyed that it offered almost everything we needed and at a great price compared to KOA camps!

    Coyote Creek State Park Campground

Nice but would be better in spring/fall

I came in on a Saturday and stayed three nights in the electric area. I reserved the last electric site which turned out to be wheelchair accessible. I hadn't seen that when making the res.It was bigger and off to the side, away from the row of RV park style sites.   I rode my bike around and saw that the primitive sites where really nice, up on the ridges and some had water, most had covered picnic tables. Pretty area. But the electric area on Sat and Sun was noisy. Someone decided on Saturday that the whole loop would enjoy his favorite style of music. How can some people think all the rest of us are going to enjoy their music? Ticks me off. I hope their rig burns down. Can you believe he actually started to sing along!

    Coyote Creek State Park Campground

    Such a welcoming place

This is my favorite campground in Northern New Mexico. Everything is always very clean, the host is friendly and approachable when needed.

I like the access to the river. Lots of good fishing spots and places sit by the river.

I especially like how dispersed the spots are further up the mountain. It's more remote and private. The other spots throughout the campsite offer versatile benefits. Nice spots close to the bathrooms, remote spots farther from everyone, multiple handicap spots....lots of variety.

I go here multiple times a year and will continue to visit as long as I can camp.

Guide to Ocate

Cabin camping near Ocate, New Mexico offers options within the Carson National Forest and surrounding mountain areas. Most sites sit at elevations between 7,000-9,000 feet, creating cool summer temperatures that contrast with New Mexico's desert regions. Winter access to many cabin facilities becomes limited from November through April due to mountain snow conditions, with overnight temperatures often dropping below freezing even in early fall.

What to do

Hiking to Indian Lake: At Agua Piedra Campground, trails lead directly from the cabin area into the Pecos Wilderness. "There is a trail head with 2 trails, one atv accessible and one hiking/horse that goes up to Indian Lake. Beautiful views and about 1200' elevation change," notes a camper who appreciated the direct access to wilderness.

Fishing opportunities: Cabin sites near Eagle Nest provide access to trout waters. At Red River RV, visitors can fish right at their accommodation. "This is our second stay at the River RV. Our camp is right next to the river, there is a shuttle that takes you into town, the facilities are clean and close by, and the fishing is great," explains one repeat visitor.

Winter activities: Some cabin sites remain open year-round despite seasonal closures elsewhere. Cabins near Sipapu ski resort provide winter accommodation options. "You can drive 10 minutes away to Sipapu ski resort to use free wifi at the cafe (which is open, but you must wear a mask!) So if you really must check your e-mail or social media, it is a quick drive and you can grab a burger and beer," mentions a visitor to Agua Piedra Campground.

What campers like

Stargazing opportunities: The remote mountain cabins offer exceptional night sky viewing. "At night, when everyone is settling, with a clear sky, you get an amazing view of the stars. The only downside is that you can kind of hear the road traffic in the morning. Not too bad but it's noticeable," explains a visitor to Agua Piedra Campground.

Wildlife encounters: The forest setting around cabins provides frequent wildlife sightings. At Road Runner RV Resort, "Tucked in a canyon with a stream running through it, we secured a spot on the water. Large pine trees, tiered spots, walking distance to the cute town of Red River... deer come in every night," reports one camper.

Mountain views: Cabin sites offer panoramic mountain scenery. At Angel Nest RV Retreat, visitors appreciate the setting. "Very large rv park with full hookups, showers, laundry, and community building. Was not busy when we were here, so we did not have anyone next to us, but the sites are very close to each other. The lake and boat launch are just down the road. Set off the main highway enough that you don't hear a lot of traffic noise. Staff were very nice and accommodating. Wonderful views of the mountains."

What you should know

Water limitations: Several cabin locations have water challenges visitors should prepare for. "Water was not available," reports a camper at Agua Piedra. Another notes: "Water onsite is listed as potable but smells and tastes so strongly of sulphur that it cannot be tolerated for drinking or cooking. Make sure to haul in water."

Cabin conditions vary significantly: Quality and maintenance differ between properties. At Sierra Bonita Cabins & RV Park, a visitor warned: "We stayed in the cabins. They are very ran down. The sink plumbing leaks. Utility closet has a hole in the door about 7 in in diameter and there is an animal that lives in there and scratches on the wall at night."

Seasonal closures affect many locations: Most cabin sites around Ocate operate on limited schedules. Road Runner RV Resort operates from "May 1 - Oct 15" according to their information, while Agua Piedra Campground lists their season as "May 25 to September 3," making advance planning essential for off-season visits.

Tips for camping with families

Meadow access for activities: Some cabin locations offer open play spaces. "Great spot for group camping of 20-40 campers. Nice shaded/wooded area for primitive tent camping with plenty of space to spread out. Gorgeous open meadow at base of camp area perfect for group games, sports," notes a visitor about Agua Piedra Campground.

Swimming options: Look for cabin sites with water recreation. "There is an awesome swimming hole just a few miles west on Hwy 518 past Sipapu Ski & Summer Resort—worth the short drive!" recommends one family visitor to the Agua Piedra area.

Breakfast services: Several cabin locations offer morning meal options. At Las Vegas/New Mexico KOA Journey, visitors appreciate the convenience: "Clean shower and common areas with a homemade breakfast available too! It's off season but the core functions are solid so I could see another stop here to soak in the sun and the pool."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven terrain at some locations. "Tent camped at this location in the middle of September (a week before closing). Very beautiful place to watch the leaves change, trailheads close by and picnic tables at each site. The site didn't have an actual tent pad but we easily found a spot to pitch a tent," notes a visitor at Agua Piedra.

Utility considerations: Water pressure varies between cabin locations. At Pendaries RV Resort, facilities receive high marks: "The bathrooms are the best we have ever seen and the water pressure allows you to take a very nice shower. Will definitely go back."

Access road conditions: Some cabin areas have challenging approach roads. "The road was not well maintained, but it wasn't really a problem," notes a visitor about Agua Piedra Campground, while other cabin locations like Angel Nest and Pendaries offer easier access for larger vehicles.
