What to do
Hiking the Gila National Forest: Railroad Canyon Campground offers access to multiple wilderness trails. "This campground has many trails to access the wilderness from, and a small creek running behind each of the three campsites," notes Mark O. from Railroad Canyon Campground.
Visit historic mining towns: Within a 30-minute drive from Continental Divide Park & Camp, visitors can explore regional mining history. "Nice Park just outside/south of the Gila National forest. Perfect spot if one wants to park and then drive into the Kila forest or cliff dwellings," explains RoadTripEddie V.
Stargazing: Gold Gulch Road offers unobstructed night sky views with minimal light pollution. "A place like from some safari movie, beautiful sunset... plenty of room for everyone and an easy route," shares Dawid M. from Gold Gulch Road.
Exploring mountain passes: Day trips to nearby mountain passes provide panoramic views. "We had a very scenic drive up into mountains to silver city, cute old town, we passed through Gila national forrest, it's about 45 miles, but a very easy nice drive on very good roads," reports Beverly T.
What campers like
Quiet, uncrowded sites: Iron Creek Campground receives praise for its peaceful atmosphere. "Clean, quiet campground not far from Emory pass. Pit toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables. Only a handful of people there on Friday night," writes Crista G. from Iron Creek Campground.
Well-maintained facilities: Visitors appreciate the cleanliness at Silver City KOA. "I've been hitting KOAs across the SW and this is maybe the nicest one I've stayed at so far. Excellent customer service, clean sites, bathrooms and a nice area," states Jon B. from Silver City KOA.
Convenient access to local attractions: Campers value proximity to regional points of interest. "Amazing! Super kind, knowledgeable and friendly. They even brought me wood. Close to town and a ton of hiking! Super clean!!" mentions Rowan B.
Year-round yurt accommodations: Yurt camping near Arenas Valley provides weather protection in all seasons. "We travel with our fifth wheel and a utility trailer aka triple tow. It's hard to find Rv parks that can accommodate 60 plus feet rigs. The staff is very friendly and there's plenty of space," notes Bill L.
What you should know
Seasonal closures: Some National Forest campgrounds close during winter months. "The four campgrounds in this area (Iron Creek, Railroad Canyon, Upper and Lower Gallinas) are all closed in December 2021. Perhaps just for the season. Contact NFS for status," advises Todd J.
Limited amenities at dispersed sites: Gold Gulch Road lacks facilities but offers more privacy. "We came in after dark, but the roads were clear and it was easy to set up. Quiet," shares Melissa S.
Variable cell service: Connectivity is inconsistent throughout the region. "No cell signal," notes RoadTripEddie V. about Iron Creek Campground.
