Awesome primitive camping site

I was able to camp free for two nights. The terrain is a bit rough but the hike to Cedros Peak is not that long and so worth it. They have fire pits set up and plenty of space to camp. You’ll have 4wheelers and dirt bikes buzzing around you but you can still isolate yourself to make it a fun camping experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Cedro Peak Campground located and how can I get there?

Cedro Peak Campground is located in the Sandia Mountains area near Albuquerque, New Mexico. The campground sits at the base of Cedro Peak, providing access to hiking trails that lead to the summit. The terrain around the campground is somewhat rough but manageable. Access is via forest service roads, and four-wheel drive vehicles may have an easier time navigating the area, though standard vehicles can reach it during good weather conditions. The campground's proximity to hiking trails makes it a convenient base for exploring the Sandia Mountain wilderness.

What facilities are available at Cedro Peak Group Campground?

Cedro Peak Group Campground offers basic facilities including established fire pits for safe cooking and campfires. The campground provides ample space to set up tents and camping gear. While amenities are minimal, the site serves as a good base for hiking to Cedro Peak. The campground doesn't offer advanced facilities like showers or electrical hookups. For current facility information, it's advisable to check with the forest service before your visit, as amenities at primitive campgrounds may change seasonally.

What is the difference between Cedro Peak Campground and Cedro Peak dispersed camping?

Cedro Peak Campground is a designated camping area with established sites and basic amenities like fire pits. In contrast, Cedro Peak dispersed camping refers to free camping allowed in the surrounding forest areas without designated sites or facilities. Dispersed camping offers more isolation and flexibility in choosing where to set up, but comes with fewer amenities. Both options provide access to the Cedro Peak hiking trails, though you may encounter recreational vehicles like dirt bikes and four-wheelers in both areas.
