Off Highway 550, this dispersed camping area sits on BLM land accessed through a five-mile washboard dirt road that passes through Zia Reservation territory. The route leads to multiple flat camping spots scattered across desert terrain, with room for RVs and tent campers alike. Free roaming cattle move through the area regularly, and campers should expect to share the space with livestock.
The area serves as a popular shooting location, with gunfire sounds occurring from dawn to dusk according to multiple visitors. Spent shell casings and shooting debris mark many sites, though campers report finding clean spots with enough space to set up away from the heaviest activity. Cell service varies by carrier, with Verizon providing better coverage than AT&T in this remote location.
"The area is big and has a selection of camp sites / flat areas to choose from," notes muj V.. White Ridge Bike Trails parking areas appear along the access road, complete with a dumpster for waste disposal. No water sources exist on-site, and the rough road requires attention to ground clearance for smaller vehicles.
Campers seeking a quieter experience might consider Ojito Wilderness, located nearby without the intensive shooting activity.
