    Turkey Swamp Park

Nicely wooded park with many activity options

General: Smallish (64-site) county park campground. There are also three cabins. As soon as you turn off the main road to the park, all roads are dirt, which was a bit surprising. They were well-maintained and in dry weather, not a problem, but probably not if it was rainy. The campground is in five loops with the bathhouse located in the D Loop.

Site Quality: Sites in Loops B-E all have pull-thru driveways. Sites are all level, very generous in size, and reasonably spaced apart for privacy. A lantern hook, picnic table, and fire ring complete each site. As mentioned, all roads and camper pads are dirt. There are some ADA sites but the only thing distinguishing them from others is their proximity to the bathroom.

Bath/Shower House: Very clean. Soap and paper towels are provided. The only thing missing were hooks or shelves for toiletries but there was a large bench that could be used. Since it is located in the D Loop it would have been helpful to have pathways leading from the other loops. Did not use the shower so cannot comment.

Activities/Amenities: There is a lake with a boat dock and a small boardwalk. Kayaking/Canoeing, fishing, and swimming. In the summer, canoe, kayak, paddle boats, and row boats are available for rental. Several short (longest one is 2.5 miles) hiking trails that are fairly well-marked but can be a bit confusing at times. Some sections of the trails were muddy due to swamps and bogs but passable. There is also a fitness trail. There is an archery range and a council ring (campfire). There is a dump station and laundry facility with brand-new washers and dryers (however, you need to pay using an app on your phone). The office is open until 9 pm and sells ice, firewood, and bait. There are age-appropriate playgrounds both in the campground and by the office.

There are not a lot of camping opportunities in NJ, and this was a nice one. The campground was only about 20% occupied when we were there at the end of April, so our stay was a quiet one.

    Baker's Acres Campground

    Rustic and Classic Campground

We stayed at Baker’s Acres Campground in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, for a weekend in mid-August. So did the rains of Hurricane Henri!

Our site(#Zoo-1) was a level back-in with 50-amp electric, water, sewer, and cable. It was easy to pull in and accommodates larger rigs. The hook-ups were all well-maintained and worked fine. We had plenty of room to fit our car too. The site included a picnic table and fire ring. My favorite thing about this campground is that most of the sites have plenty of trees and shrubs for semi-privacy, shade, and a rustic feel.

This campground has been family run for over 50-years and has an interesting history that’s worth reading more about. Our site is located across from the pickle ball court which used to be a petting zoo(now the site# should make sense, right?). We came because we wanted to experience one of New Jersey’s oldest campgrounds. We liked the interesting vignettes they created around the campground as well as the goldfish pond near the office and store.

Baker’s Acres is well-maintained. The amenities include a swimming pool, lots of sports courts/fields, and a bunch of family-friendly scheduled activities. There is a camp store with all the usual items as well as bath and laundry facilities. The wifi service was ok, but costs$1 per day per device. Our Verizon cell service worked fine.

The front office staff were all friendly and we love that, especially when checking in at a new campground.

Drive time to Tuckerton Seaport is about 10-minutes and Long Beach Island is about 35-minutes depending on traffic. There are plenty of stores within a 5-mile drive if you should need anything including Walmart, super markets, convenience stores, and several restaurants.

Our only minor negative was that our site was sandy dirt which created a bit of a mess, especially after the rain. It is the Jersey shore, after all. This would have been 5 stars if the site had gravel, grass, or was finished with concrete. It’s a pet peeve, but I hate having to constantly clean up to keep the sand out of our RV.

This is a great old-fashioned campground close to LBI. We’ll can’t wait to go back!

    Turkey Swamp Park

    My favorite!

We stayed in New Jersey for our 5th campground on the East Coast: Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold. This is a County park.

     Near some Revolutionary War battlefields.

I really liked this park! They have 2283 acres. A 17 acre lake. Some hiking trails & a nice campground! The sites are all pullthrough. There's lots of vegetation for "privacy". We had a site on the perimeter, which are forest views. Only problem is none of the roads are paved. All are packed sand. We could tell it rained recently because of the muddy tracks. Fortunately it didn't rain while we were there!

Shower/bathrooms are clean, but dated. They're checked regularly. The bath house is for the entire campground. 3 out of the 4 women's were working. There's a shared dressing area.

There's a laundry that doesn't take quarters. EPay.

There's a nice playground in the campground.

They have 3 cabins for rent, with forest views.

The lake has fishing & boat rentals. No gas motors. There's no swimming at the lake. Cell service was fair.. No WiFi.

    They have an archery range.

This was my favorite campground on our trip! I really enjoyed camping here! There's a rustic retro quality to the place. I adored the campsites & I didn't see any really bad ones.

    Turkey Swamp Park

    Beautiful well equipped campground

Used this very clean county park numerous times. Pull through sites are well spaced and private and each has permanent trash and recycling bins with bag provided, water, AC power, table and a post for a lantern. There's a pond for kayaking, playground and archery range. Bathrooms are dated looking but very clean.

    Sea Pirate Campground

    Fun LBI Getaway

We stayed at Sea Pirate Campground in West Creek, New Jersey, for a week in mid-August We’re so glad we did!

Our site (#201) was a level pull-thru with 50-amp electric, water, sewer, and cable. It was easy to pull in and can accommodate larger rigs. The hook-ups were all well-maintained and worked fine. We had plenty of room to fit our car too. The site included a picnic table and fire ring.

The gated campground was clean and well-maintained. The heated swimming pool was large and the water crystal clear. The store was stocked with typical essentials like supplies, fire wood, and snacks. Daily trash collection was a nice convenience. Wifi service was strong and our Verizon cell service worked fine.

The front office staff were all friendly and we love that, especially when checking in at a new campground.

Drive time to Long Beach Island ranged between 3-40 minutes each trip we took depending on traffic. There are plenty of stores within a 5-mile drive if you should need anything including Walmart, super markets, convenience stores, and several restaurants.

Our only minor negatives were that the firewood sold in the store was so wet it wouldn’t light and they charge an additional$5 if you want it delivered to your site. And our site was really sandy and dirty which created a bit of a mess, especially after some rain, but it is the Jersey shore.

This is a great campground with a nice pool and good proximity to LBI. We’ll can’t wait to go back!

    Brendan Byrne State Forest

    Nice campsite for car camping

Flat site, no tent bed, enough space to park two cars. Campsite decent size, but some don't have clear boundaries to neighbors, and sometimes not optimally configured (e.g., the site next door's fire pit was placed on the edge of its site/right next to my site). Could hear the traffic on Rte 72 at night despite being a half mile away.

Bathrooms were clean and stocked, warm/hot water available. No issues with firepit, water, plenty of tinder nearby. Bought firewood at the office for $7, but there is plenty of dead wood lying around outside the campsite. Picnic tables were somewhat hacked/battoned for kindling, but many sites had a log lying around for such purpose.

Went during the week and there were only 3 other campsites in use, ran into very few people on the trails. Ticks were definitely present but wasn't too crazy - found 2 on me in 3 days, no mosquito bites... thanks permethrin!

    Timberland Lake Campground

A trailer park with a very nice staff

Pros... Located right next to six flags great adventure. Staff is very nice! Lots of sites for RVs and tents. Lake, mini golf, golf cart rental, huge pool, snack stand, small store Packed with food & everything you could possibly need for camping. Bathroom/ showers were decently clean.

Cons... Small camp site. Fire ring seemed to be an old truck rim (no grill, but they'll sell you one 🙄). Old beat up picnic table in the weeds. No privacy. Could definitely be maintained a little better. Trash in the lake, old out of service chairs, boats, and junk next to the lake. Didn't seem to be any hiking trails. Due to covid restrictions the pool was limited to 71 people at a time and was plenty crowded! I'd hate to see it at full capacity! After 2 hours of swimming a panty liner was spotted floating around. We alerted the staff who then came, picked it up and threw it out. We left in disgust. There was a group campsite of about 30 people a few sites down from us that partied like the world was ending and basically ruined our stay. Complained to staff multiple times and every time they warned the rowdy site. Staff was very apologetic to us and even comped our groceries. I got the impression that a lot of the trailer campers live there year round (or maybe just the summer). You walk around, meet some people and it seems a little like a trashy trailer park. Then the rowdy campers. Is this place a trash magnet? Again the staff was really nice and tried their best but I wouldn't go back. Oh and the wood they sell you is dog shit! Only time I've ever seen a burning log go out on it's own after a few minutes.

Guide to Long Branch

Cabin rentals near Long Branch, New Jersey range from basic rustic structures to more modern accommodations with electrical hookups. Most cabin facilities are located within 30 miles of Long Branch in wooded areas with easy access to major highways. Winter cabin availability is limited to select locations, with several campgrounds closing seasonally from late fall through early spring.

What to do

Hiking and nature walks: Allaire State Park offers multiple trail systems for hiking throughout the year. "We found this campground one night when we were in NJ. It ended up snowing that night. The bathrooms were clean and warm. There is a lot to do in the area," notes Lisa S.

Fishing opportunities: Cabin guests at Turkey Swamp Park have access to a stocked fishing lake. "There is pretty lake with good fishing and they sell bait at the Ranger office," reports Katheryn N. The lake serves as a central feature of the park with fishing permitted year-round.

Mountain biking: Several parks near Long Branch feature dedicated biking trails ranging from beginner to advanced difficulty levels. "Mountain Biking from easy, paved trails to several miles of single track with everything in between," writes Beau B. about Allaire State Park. Some trails connect to longer regional routes.

Winter activities: Seasonal cabin rentals support cold-weather outdoor recreation opportunities. "We go every year. Ice skate on the lake in the winter or just enjoy a gorgeous walk in the woods," explains Patrick M. about Turkey Swamp Park, where winter activities include designated areas for ice sports.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Butterfly Camping Resort features cabins with natural buffers between sites. "The sites are cozy and each lined with natural shrubbery and in some cases fencing. They're well maintained and raked between campers," says Tina D. These privacy features help create separation between camping units.

Clean facilities: Many cabin properties maintain regular cleaning schedules for shared facilities. "The campground was super clean too. It was perfect!" reports JAEWOOK P. about Turkey Swamp Park. Most locations feature daily bathroom cleaning with more thorough deep cleaning performed weekly.

Pool amenities: Several cabin properties offer swimming pools during summer months. "The swimming pool was large and the water crystal clear," notes Matt S. about Butterfly Camping Resort. Pools typically operate from Memorial Day through Labor Day with specific swimming hours posted.

Proximity to attractions: Cabins near Long Branch provide convenient access to regional activities. "This campground is conveniently located near six flags (5min), Sesame Place (40 min) and Philadelphia (60 min)," Jim C. explains about Timberland Lake Campground. Most cabin locations are within a 45-minute drive of major attractions.

What you should know

Sand-based sites: Many cabin locations feature sandy soil which can create housekeeping challenges. "The sites are sand and dirt, moss, leaves. Enough space for 2-3 tents. Lots of trees for hammocks," describes Dwight D. about Allaire State Park. Outdoor rugs or mats are recommended for cabin entrances.

Maintenance varies: Facility upkeep differs significantly between properties. "There are many pot holes that need gravel. Overall will not rule this campground out in the future but will look for other campgrounds first," notes Jim C. about Timberland Lake Campground. Older facilities may have deferred maintenance issues.

Limited bathroom facilities: Some cabin areas have restricted bathroom availability. "The campsite falls short in terms of its bathroom facilities. The stall doors are quite small and lack privacy," explains Bradley B. about Pine Cone Campgrounds. Shower facilities often operate on limited hours.

Highway noise: Certain cabin locations experience road noise from nearby highways. "Noisy with highway traffic. Well maintained though. Ticks galore," Justin S. reports about Allaire State Park. Sites further from main roads generally provide quieter environments.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Indian Rock RV Resort offers family-oriented programming throughout peak season. "Many campers here are seasonal or long term stays and were very quiet and respectful," says Valen K. Most family cabins include outdoor space with picnic tables and fire rings.

Playground access: Multiple cabin facilities maintain dedicated play areas for children. "Playground, basket ball, beautiful pool and for an extra fee beach access," explains Jim C. about Timberland Lake. Playground equipment typically includes swings, slides and climbing structures.

Weekend programming: Organized activities increase during summer weekends at most cabin properties. "Lots of activities for the kids with park area and pool. They do also offer golf cart rental for those wanting explore the park," notes Robyn W. about Timberland Lake Campground. Activity schedules are typically posted at registration offices.

Bug awareness: Insect activity varies seasonally throughout cabin areas. "We were worried about bugs, but we didn't even use mosquito repellent and didn't get a single bite!" reports JAEWOOK P. about Turkey Swamp Park. Ticks are common in warmer months, particularly in wooded areas and tall grass.

Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: Adventure Bound Camping offers varying electrical service levels for cabin and RV sites. "I reserved and paid-in-full for a premium site which listed 50-amp service and a concrete pad. Nope. Only 30-amp service and no concrete pad," warns Matt S. Confirming exact amenities before arrival is recommended.

Site dimensions: RV sites adjacent to cabin areas have specific size limitations. "Tight site & hard to get in/out for big rigs," notes Beth R. about Adventure Bound Camping. Site measurements are available when booking but may not account for all obstructions.

Seasonal limitations: Operating schedules vary significantly between properties. "We departed on Sunday, but the serene ambiance almost prompted us to extend our stay," Howard P. explains about Adventure Bound Camping. Most cabin facilities require minimum stays during peak season with differing cancellation policies.

Utility reliability: Power supply and water access can fluctuate during peak usage. "The hook-ups were all well-maintained and worked fine," reports Matt S. about Butterfly Camping Resort. Older facilities may experience periodic utility interruptions during high-demand periods.
