Brendan Byrne State Forest offers well-maintained equestrian camping facilities in New Jersey's pine barrens region. Most campsites feature dirt surfaces and level ground suitable for both tents and trailers. The forest contains approximately 25 miles of sandy trails through pine and oak woodland, with elevation changes generally less than 100 feet throughout the trail system. Winter temperatures average 30-45°F while summer ranges from 75-90°F with high humidity.
What to do
Archery practice: Turkey Swamp Park provides dedicated archery facilities for target practice during your equestrian camping trip. Bring your own equipment to use the hay barrel targets. As Patrick M. notes, "Bring your bow and shoot at the hay barrels."
Winter activities: Turkey Swamp Park maintains year-round recreation options for winter equestrian campers. The park's lake freezes sufficiently for ice skating during colder months. "Ice skate on the lake in the winter or just enjoy a gorgeous walk in the woods," shares Patrick M.
Mountain biking between rides: Allaire State Park offers extensive biking trails when taking a break from horseback riding. The trail system includes both paved paths and technical single-track sections. "Mountain Biking from easy, paved trails to several miles of single track with everything in between," explains Beau B.
What campers like
Spacious campsites: Brendan Byrne campsites provide ample space for horse trailers and camping equipment. Lindsay D. confirms the generous sizing: "Nice and quiet, sites are spaced out enough to offer privacy. Good trees for hammocking! Plenty of room for a few tents at each site."
Trail connectivity: The extensive trail network allows riders to access diverse terrain directly from campsites. Many trails form interconnected loops with natural water sources. "The walking trails! There are probably hundreds of miles of trails through the woods and bogs to explore," Benjamin K. shares about Brendan Byrne State Forest.
Minimal noise pollution: Despite proximity to military installations, the campground maintains a peaceful atmosphere. "It's far away from traffic noise. You can't here any cars or any other noise from civilization at all. It's at least 10 miles away from anything more than a single house in the woods," notes Benjamin K.
What you should know
Fire regulations: Campfires at Brendan Byrne are permitted only during specified hours. "Only weird rule I saw was that fires can only go from 6pm till 7am which was odd but wasn't a deal breaker," explains Dorian P.
Water availability: Turkey Swamp Park provides water hookups, but hose length may affect accessibility. "Bring a LONG water hose," advises Shawn, noting that some water spigots are positioned at a distance from sites.
Tick prevention: Equestrian campers should take precautions against ticks, particularly during warmer months. "Ticks were very active on this visit be sure to remember your bug spray and tuck your pants in your socks!" warns Megan S. about Brendan Byrne.
Seasonal road conditions: Access roads within the parks may become challenging during wet periods. Many campgrounds feature dirt roads that require careful navigation. "All roads and camper pads are dirt," notes Lee D. about Turkey Swamp, adding they are "well-maintained and in dry weather, not a problem, but probably not if it was rainy."
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Allaire State Park features playground facilities suitable for children during equestrian camping trips. "Playground. Campground sells firewood," mentions Dwight D. about the available amenities.
Educational opportunities: Families can combine horseback riding with historical education at Allaire's interpretive sites. "Working village and antique train are available most of the year. There are also lots of festivals throughout the summer months," explains Beau B.
Insect management: Parents should prepare children for insects when camping in New Jersey's pine regions. "We went camping with our 2- and 3-year-old kids. We were worried about bugs, but we didn't even use mosquito repellent and didn't get a single bite!" reports JAEWOOK P. about their September visit to Turkey Swamp Park.
Bathroom proximity: When camping with young children, consider site location relative to restroom facilities. "Centralized playground for the kids with bathrooms and showers next door," notes Dan W. about the convenient layout at Turkey Swamp.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: RV campers at Brendan Byrne should note site limitations regarding electric hookups. "I will say that the rules of the campsites are ambiguous on the website and when we first arrived were unaware that if using an RV in a tent site you are not allowed to add another tent to the site," cautions Jesse G.
Pull-through access: Turkey Swamp Park offers pull-through driveways in multiple camping loops, simplifying parking for larger rigs and horse trailers. Lee D. explains: "Sites in Loops B-E all have pull-thru driveways. Sites are all level, very generous in size, and reasonably spaced apart for privacy."
Dump station location: RV campers should note sanitary dump station locations when planning equestrian camping trips. "There is a dump station and laundry facility with brand-new washers and dryers (however, you need to pay using an app on your phone)," advises Lee D. about Turkey Swamp Park.
