No equestrian-specific campgrounds exist near Highland Park, New Jersey, but several campgrounds within driving distance offer diverse camping experiences. Located in the Raritan Valley region at approximately 100 feet above sea level, the area experiences humid continental climate with warm summers and mild winters. Camping season typically runs April through October, with sites ranging from primitive tent areas to RV-ready spots with hookups.
What to do
Water activities: 20-minute drive to Spruce Run Recreation Area where you can rent kayaks, canoes, and paddleboats during summer months. "There is a lake with a boat dock and a small boardwalk. Kayaking/Canoeing, fishing, and swimming. In the summer, canoe, kayak, paddle boats, and row boats are available for rental," notes Lee D.
Archery: 25 miles south at Turkey Swamp Park which maintains a dedicated archery range. "Plenty to do over a 2 night stay. Archery, boating, fishing, and hiking. Boat rental rates are acceptable and there are four different styles to choose from," reports Dan W.
Mountain biking: 30 miles away at Allaire State Park with trails ranging from paved paths to technical single track. "Mountain Biking from easy, paved trails to several miles of single track with everything in between. Working village and antique train are available most of the year," explains Beau B.
What campers like
Privacy and space: Turkey Swamp Park offers wooded sites set apart from neighbors. "Sites are all level, very generous in size, and reasonably spaced apart for privacy. A lantern hook, picnic table, and fire ring complete each site," according to Lee D.
Wildlife viewing: Mountainview Campground provides opportunities to see local wildlife in natural settings. "We've never heard so much wildlife there as I did here. Only shortly after we settled into our tent did we hear foxes fighting right outside our tent, the snorts of deer, and there were bats right above us all night making noise!" shares Christina H.
Urban proximity: Liberty Harbor RV Park offers unusual urban camping with city access. "This is a prime location for visiting the city or heading down the shore. The light rail is a block away, and the path train is about 8," notes Joe R.
What you should know
Site conditions: Packed sand roads in some campgrounds can become challenging after rain. "As soon as you turn off the main road to the park, all roads are dirt, which was a bit surprising. They were well-maintained and in dry weather, not a problem, but probably not if it was rainy," observes Lee D. about Turkey Swamp Park.
Tick awareness: Ticks are common in wooded New Jersey campgrounds. "By the 2nd day I had 3 ticks on me. My dog had one and by the end my husband had 2. That was so crazy because we were just sitting by our camper," warns Laura Y.
Noise levels: Brendan Byrne State Forest offers quieter camping away from highways. "It's far away from traffic noise. You can't hear any cars or any other noise from civilization at all. It's at least 10 miles away from anything more than a single house in the woods," notes Benjamin K.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Turkey Swamp Park offers age-appropriate playground facilities. "There are age-appropriate playgrounds both in the campground and by the office," according to Lee D., making it suitable for children of various ages.
Bug prevention: Pack extra bug spray and protective clothing, especially for children. "Ticks were very active on this visit be sure to remember your bug spray and tuck your pants in your socks!" advises Megan S. about camping at Brendan Byrne State Forest.
Short hiking trails: Choose parks with manageable trail lengths for younger children. "Several short (longest one is 2.5 miles) hiking trails that are fairly well-marked but can be a bit confusing at times," notes Lee D., making Turkey Swamp suitable for families.
Tips from RVers
Water and electric access: Spruce Run Recreation Area offers lakefront sites with limited hookups. "Sites on the water are just so nice. We luckily have some solar so we can go for awhile without running the generator. We fill our fresh water tank for and bring drinking water," advises Ruette W.
Dump station availability: Plan accordingly as sewer connections are limited. "There is a dump station and laundry facility with brand-new washers and dryers (however, you need to pay using an app on your phone)," reports Lee D. about Turkey Swamp Park.
Water hose requirements: Pack extra-long water hoses at certain campgrounds. "Nice, remote, private. Some sites unlevel. Bring a LONG water hose. Nice lake. Showers and washers and dryers," recommends Shawn about Turkey Swamp Park.
