Remote and beautiful!

This is the most remote of the AMC's huts, sitting roughly 6 miles from a trailhead. The hike in from the Gale Rive trailhead isn't an easy hike with a loaded (or partially loaded) backpack. Staying in the hut does enable you to hike with a lighter load given that they provide bunks with mattresses, pillows, wool blankets and two out of three meals. Regardless, it can be a moderate to strenuous hike.

The hut itself is small and not as popular as some of the other huts. There are some 4,000 foot peaks in the area (South Twin for one) and you could spend a few nights here and plan a couple of day hikes before hiking back out. You can also hike from Galehead to the Zealand Falls hut in a day. You will travel over rocky terrain as well as through alpine bogs where spotting moose sign (or a moose) is possible.

The hut croo is always super helpful and the food can be pretty good, too! The huts offer warm beverages, potable water, baked goods (available for purchase) and composting toilets. Even if you aren't planning on spending the night (the huts are quite pricey) it's a nice spot to stop in and see.

Mountain Luxury

Expensive but incredible. Great food and cozy bunks. Bunks are in shared bunk rooms. Best to have a reservation, especially in July. Croo is wonderful. Overall great stay, huts make it easy to light the trip load. But no pets allowed in hut.

Nice but expensive

This is a really nice shelter with an amazing view that you get to after coming down the hill from some of the nearby peaks. I didn't get a chance to sleep here since we came when it was closed for the season but we really enjoyed using the porch and open outdoor areas to relax and cook our breakfast. I would suggest planning a summer or spring trip since when we came in late fall there was already some snow on the ground and it was pretty cold. However, at the right time of year this shelter can be a hopping place so book in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What reviews do hikers give AMC Galehead Hut?

Hikers consistently rate Galehead Hut very highly, praising its remote location and stunning views. As the most remote of AMC's huts, it offers a rewarding destination after challenging hikes. Visitors appreciate the cozy accommodations, excellent food service, and the helpful hut crew (known as the Croo). The hut's outdoor areas, including the porch, are highlighted as perfect spots to relax and take in the surrounding wilderness. While some note the expense, most feel the amenities and experience justify the cost, especially considering the opportunity to hike with lighter packs.

What do the photos of AMC Galehead Hut show about the facilities?

Photos of Galehead Hut showcase a rustic mountain shelter with shared bunk rooms featuring mattresses for overnight stays. The exterior reveals a welcoming structure with an inviting porch that offers spectacular mountain views. Inside, the hut maintains a cozy atmosphere with communal spaces for dining and socializing. The facility's position, set against dramatic White Mountain scenery, highlights its remote character and integration with the natural landscape.

How does the reservation system work for Galehead Hut?

Reservations are strongly recommended for Galehead Hut, especially during peak season in July when availability becomes limited. The AMC operates a reservation system where hikers can book bunks in advance. The hut offers shared bunk rooms with mattresses provided, eliminating the need to carry sleeping pads. Since this is the most remote AMC hut (about 6 miles from the nearest trailhead), securing accommodations ahead of time is particularly important. No pets are allowed in the hut. For current availability and to make reservations, contact the Appalachian Mountain Club directly.
