Galehead Hut

Remote and beautiful!

This is the most remote of the AMC's huts, sitting roughly 6 miles from a trailhead. The hike in from the Gale Rive trailhead isn't an easy hike with a loaded (or partially loaded) backpack. Staying in the hut does enable you to hike with a lighter load given that they provide bunks with mattresses, pillows, wool blankets and two out of three meals. Regardless, it can be a moderate to strenuous hike.

The hut itself is small and not as popular as some of the other huts. There are some 4,000 foot peaks in the area (South Twin for one) and you could spend a few nights here and plan a couple of day hikes before hiking back out. You can also hike from Galehead to the Zealand Falls hut in a day. You will travel over rocky terrain as well as through alpine bogs where spotting moose sign (or a moose) is possible.

The hut croo is always super helpful and the food can be pretty good, too! The huts offer warm beverages, potable water, baked goods (available for purchase) and composting toilets. Even if you aren't planning on spending the night (the huts are quite pricey) it's a nice spot to stop in and see.
