Beautiful shelter on the Cohos Trail

I stopped in on a thru-hike of the Cohos Trail. This was a beautiful structure nestled in the woods, with a privy nearby and a bear box.

It was a quiet, peaceful, well-maintained stop before heading further north.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find camping spots in Nash Stream Forest?

Devil's Rest Shelter is one of the camping options in Nash Stream Forest, situated along the Cohos Trail. This shelter provides a rustic camping experience nestled in the woods. Nash Stream Forest also offers primitive camping opportunities throughout its expansive woodland area. Check with the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands for a complete list of designated camping areas within the forest. Most camping spots are accessible via hiking trails, with Devil's Rest Shelter being particularly popular among Cohos Trail thru-hikers.

Are permits required for camping in Nash Stream Forest?

No permits are required for camping at Devil's Rest Shelter or most other designated areas in Nash Stream Forest. Camping is generally allowed following standard backcountry protocols. However, always check with the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands for any seasonal restrictions or policy updates before your trip. While permits aren't needed, campers should follow Leave No Trace principles and be aware of any fire restrictions that may be in place.

What outdoor activities are available around Nash Stream Forest campsites?

Nash Stream Forest offers abundant outdoor activities near its campsites. Hiking is the primary draw, with the Cohos Trail running through the forest and past Devil's Rest Shelter. Wildlife observation opportunities abound in the peaceful woodland setting. Photography, birdwatching, and stargazing are excellent in this remote location. Seasonal activities may include snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter, while fishing is popular in warmer months. The natural beauty of the forest provides a perfect backdrop for nature appreciation and quiet contemplation.

What is the best time of year to camp in Nash Stream Forest?

Late spring through early fall (May-October) is the optimal time to camp in Nash Stream Forest. Summer offers warm days and mild nights, making it ideal for enjoying the shelter's natural setting. Fall brings spectacular foliage colors to the forest. Devil's Rest Shelter is well-maintained but provides basic accommodation, so winter camping would require significant cold-weather experience and gear. Early spring may involve muddy conditions as snow melts. Consider that this is a popular stop for Cohos Trail thru-hikers during peak hiking season, so midsummer weekends might be busier.
