CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Cabins in the greater Lincoln area offer accommodations with varying amenities at several established campgrounds. Camp A Way Campground in Lincoln provides cabin rentals with electric hookups and access to on-site showers and toilets. According to one visitor, "The campground was incredibly clean and well landscaped. Tons of fun activities for the kids!" Eugene T. Mahoney State Park and Platte River State Park both offer cabin options with electricity, water access, and picnic tables. Most cabins include air conditioning and heating for year-round comfort, though amenities vary by location and cabin type.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Two Rivers State Recreation Area features unique Union Pacific Caboose cabins along with standard cabin accommodations. West Omaha/NE Lincoln KOA Holiday provides traditional KOA-style cabins with access to full campground amenities. Pet policies vary by property, with most allowing pets but imposing restrictions. A camper wrote, "We stayed in a pull-thru site with a patio. Since the sites are so close together someone arrived late at night parking directly behind us." Advance reservations are strongly recommended, especially during summer months when family-oriented cabins fill quickly.

Most cabins require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries while providing basic furniture and sleeping surfaces. Kitchen facilities range from basic microwaves to full kitchenettes depending on the cabin type. Double Nickel Campground and Memphis Lake State Recreation Area maintain on-site markets where basic provisions and camping supplies can be purchased. For more extensive grocery needs, the nearby cities of Lincoln and Omaha offer numerous shopping options. Firewood is available for purchase at several locations, including Camp A Way and Double Nickel Campground, for use in designated fire pits or rings adjacent to cabins.

    Wonderful and Fun

Union Pacific Cabooses — Two Rivers SRA

Fun place to take the kids

If you enjoy some extra comforts, rent one of the train cabooses which feature a small kitchen, bathroom, AC and beds with mattresses. Our kids loved the lofted full sized bed (but we kicked them to the bunk beds). There are charcoal grills outside, a close by swimming area, and lots of space to wander.

    Platte River State Park Campground

Perfect spot to explore Omaha and the Great Plains

Platte River State Park is a beautiful, full service park with plenty of amenities. There are playgrounds and a splash pad for the kids, canoe rentals, and plenty of trails to hike or bike. Sites are concrete pads with full hookups and include a fire ring and picnic table. The campground also has a bathroom and dog park. 5 bars of AT&T @ 120Mbps!

    Double Nickel Campground

Pretty and right off the highway

First, the owners are SO nice and helpful. The campground is right off the exit so it is very convenient and easy to get to, they have full hook ups for a very reasonable price so it was a great choice for a stop on our cross country trip. The amenities are nice- they have a pool, large playground, mini put and standard camp store. Things look a bit old but well maintained. Each spot had a porch swing, picnic table and fire ring which we very much enjoyed. The laundry room was closed due to Covid, but they do have one which is helpful too :) my kids particularly enjoyed the mini put and pool.

    Double Nickel Campground

    Diamond in the rough…

Older park with new owners. Convenient to hwy 80, Waco Nebraska. That means some hwy noise but it’s Nebraska, it’s flat! No jake brake noise. Besides we now wear ear plugs to bed so not an issue (try it, you’ll like it.) This place has all kinds of activities for kids young and old(er). Arcade, pool ( being repaired at time of review, it’s too cool now to think of swimming), corn hole toss game, miniature golf or just rocking on one of the many swinging chairs. Our site was ample, gravel pad and grass, fire ring, table and swing. Everything worked ( other than pool) even Wi-Fi, it worked well! That’s enough to bring me back. A few more of the new owners upgrades and repairs and this place could be a five star.

    Memphis Lake State Rec Area

    One of my favorites

Tent camping sites. No electrical hookups but you can still camp in campers if you want. Beautiful Campground with lots of trees and shade. Very nice Lake with fishing available. There appears to be an option for canoe rentals available. Boat ramp and dock. Multiple bathroom locations within the campground. Picnic tables near the water. I’ve kayaked the lake! So much fun.

    Double Nickel Campground

Well Run Campground with Exceptional Service

We’d passed through this area a few years ago when traveling I-80 and noticed there was a campground(CG) and golf course here in Waco, NE. We added this CG to our list and finally got a chance to stay here. The CG is a little ways off I-80 and easy to get to. Check-in was quick and easy and we were led to pull through site 303 with FHUs. There are separate prices for weekdays and weekends. The utilities were at the center of the long gravel pad. Water pressure was okay at around 40 psi. We got 2 bars on Verizon. The sites here are decently spaced especially for a private CG. The CG was clean and well-maintained. If there were long-term residents, you could not tell. We were here over a weekend, so there were families and a lot of kids using the swimming pool, mini golf, and the large playground area. Each site, along with a picnic table and fire pit has a bench swing. There’s a decent-sized dog park on the south side and larger one on the north side. The CG has its own tornado siren plus an underground tornado shelter. There’s one cabin for rent. They also have a well-kept laundry room with 2 washers and 2 dryers. York has your main amenities such as Walmart. The golf course right next door is a deceptively tough 9-hole course.

Water recreation: Lake Wanahoo State Recreation Area offers a no-wake lake perfect for kayaking and small watercraft. A visitor notes, "Great fishing and kayaking lake! Bike path goes all the way around the lake. Sites are large and spaced out. I prefer the ones along the water but you have to book early to get one."

Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathroom and shower facilities rank high in camper reviews. Jan S. commented about Camp A Way Campground, "Very clean. Helpful friendly staff. Huge, clean dog run shaded with locust trees. Best dog run we have seen this trip... Clean laundry facilities. They also have large washer and dryer if you need to do bed covers."

Unique accommodations: Several campgrounds offer distinctive lodging options beyond standard cabins. At Eugene T. Mahoney State Park Campground, visitors can access diverse accommodations including cabins. One visitor commented, "This place has it all... What you should know

Weather considerations: Nebraska camping conditions vary dramatically by season. Maricris C. noted at Eugene T. Mahoney, "This is a really nice state park. There are plenty to do. My son and I camped for one night. We went paddle boating, swimming, and horse back riding."

Reservation requirements: Most cabin facilities require advance booking, especially during peak seasons. About West Omaha/NE Lincoln KOA Holiday, Cynthia K. advised, "We always stop here when we're traveling on I-80. It's the perfect distance for us to overnight before moving on... We've stopped on a couple of holidays & a reservation is a must! They are very busy!"

Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some campgrounds. At Memphis Lake State Recreation Area, Pat V. mentioned, "The one big downfall is the number of trailers there running their generators. That did get annoying at night, but overall we will be back!"

Seasonal availability: Some facilities restrict certain camping options based on time of year. Molly M. noted about Platte River State Park, "We go every year, tents not allowed yet. Plenty of cabins, water park and gun range. Horse rides available."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Several campgrounds offer dedicated facilities for children. About Camp A Way Campground, Heather A. shared, "This place has tons for kids to do. There is a hand-built playground, basketball court, slip n slide, dog park, bounce stuff for kids."

Swimming options: Water features provide summer recreation for families. At Cottonwood Campground, Morgan W. commented, "Two rivers is my favorite Nebraska hidden gem! The state Rec Park is by both the Elkhorn and Platte rivers, thus it's name, Two Rivers... A swimming beach for kids, and river access when the river is low enough."

Caboose cabins: Unique lodging appeals to families with children. Rick J. noted, "We usually tent camp but have also stayed in the cabooses a couple times, the kids really enjoy that. If your looking to get away from people this is probably not the place for you because during the summer it is busy even during the week."

Shaded sites: For summer camping with children, look for tree cover. Shannon G. advised about West Omaha/NE Lincoln KOA Holiday, "This campground had amazing staff, was clean, and had great amenities. The sites are very small however, and to do anything besides swim and play on the playground you need to drive."
