      Bessey Recreation Complex Campground

We loved it, we hiked it, some tanked it, others ATV'd it

We wanted to camp Nebraska's national forest for some time and we were not disappointed. The camp was full to the brim.  all sites with hookups were taken, but the overflow is an abandoned, overgrown baseball field.  It was great, spacious, close to the showers and flush toilets, and only $8 a night!

I think hookups were only $16, so this is a great deal no matter how you slice it.

Neighboring Thedford has Kayaks and Tanks you can rent.  Tanking has become a Nebraska Thing.  fitting a group of folks and possibly a keg in a horse tank and floating down river!  We hiked to the ranger tower and it was a great hike with a spring fed trough half way up.  Much to see in the surrounding area including art galleries, quilt shops, and more.  Nice camping supply store right in Halsey.

      Bessey Recreation Complex Campground

      A hidden gem

This is a nice little campground in the Sandhills of Nebraska. Campsites are spaced apart nicely over three loops and many of the sites offer electric hookups. There are numerous water spigots around the campground and there’s also a dump station. The campground has hot showers, a basketball court and horseshoe pits available. A vending machine is located by the registration kiosks. Make sure to bring whatever you need with you because there isn’t much in Thedford or Halsey.

There are lots of OHV trails in the area or there’s also a 2.5 mile hiking trail that leads to a fire lookout tower that’s open to public access.

Be aware that there is a railway crossing at the turnoff from Route 2 so you will hear trains and train horns.

      Bessey Recreation Complex Campground

Nice and Can't beat the price

Halsey National Forests campground is called Bessey Recreation Campground and has cabins, Rv sites, tent sites, as well as group and family sites. The Rv sites are Electric and gravel and are fairly level. They have picnic tables and fire rings and are spacious. And of course plenty of shade since you are in a forest.

There is a Nursery which grows the trees for the forest, a Look Out Tower which offers a panoramic view of the Sandhills, hunting, fishing, scenic drives, wildlife viewing, hiking and ATV trails, along with other activities.

It is a nice place to stop over and see.

      Natick Campground

      Quiet and Peaceful

Short version - super peaceful, nice trees, some of the sites are open enough for Starlink connectivity. Fire rings and picnic tables at each site. I would camp there again.

Stayed 1 night, April 29 to 30. I had the entire campground to myself. There are multiple designated sites (10+) in the campground all are fairly close to each other. No electric, $15 per night, iron ranger, fire ring and picnic table at each site. There is a vault toilet in the campground. This area is designed to be the horse camping area for the national forest/grassland unit.

The drive to the campground from the main entrance of the NNF is 7-8 miles on a mix of paved and gravel road. The first section of paved road nearest the entrance is in excellent shape while the remainder of the road is gravel, which is in fine condition, and paved road in poor condition. With that said, I expect almost any vehicle could make it to the campground, it just would be slow and uncomfortable in a sedan. No issues in a stock truck or SUV.

Natick was not part of the fires a couple of years ago, other sections of the forest and grasslands were. Based on the grass and tree debris in and around the horse corrals I doubt that anyone has had their horses out there yet this year. The only things I heard while there was the wind in the trees, some wildlife, and an occasional airplane.

I went to the Bessey section of the NNF just to get away from people and drive around the trails. The trails are soft, no surprise in the Sandhills, but are not technical. Just good easy fun. No need to even air down, although you may want to for ride comfort. I kept the tires near 40psi in my 4th Gen Ram.

Other than people working at the HQ building, on the bridge leading into Bessey, and planting trees, I saw fewer than a dozen people while I was there. A few people were camping in the area near the entrance (where there is electric) who looked like longer term campers. I saw 2 people, in just 1 of the spots, out at the Whitetail campground. I would have stayed at Whitetail since it is on the Dismal River if it had been empty, but why camp near others when there are other options.

      Victoria Springs State Rec Area

Quiet rural stop in middle of nowhere - Nebraska

The sites are mostly level and well groomed grass with 2 new concrete handicap spots. The 30 amp and 50 amp power was proper voltage and dependable. Access to clear line of site to south for Dish or Directv is difficult due to heavy tree population. Non-Nebraska resident requires $14 pass in addition to the $30 fee with electric.  Potable water is available and dump station is easily accessible with a rinse water source. Ingress and egress is good with gravel road surfaces in park. The restrooms and showers are very clean and accessible.

      Victoria Springs State Rec Area

      Quiet small campground

Located in the center of Nebraska, Victoria Springs is a 27 site campground and a couple of rental cabins. You can rent paddle boats for the small lake. Merlin counted 10 different bird sounds here in April. The park has a basketball hoop, horseshoes, and a playground across the creek by the lake. Most sites are electric and 6 that are non-electric, and water hydrants are sprinkled throughout the campground. There is a shower house with flush toilets (not open in April) and a vault toilet at the end of the loop. While I like Bessey a few miles away, this is much quieter without trains every 10 minutes. Cell service available with both T-mobile/Mint (strongest) and Verizon/Visible.

      Victoria Springs State Rec Area

      Small and quiet

This campground is small, the sites are open but not right next to each other. It was nice and quiet overnight. The tent sites have grass pads which are preferred because staking the tent is way easier in grass than rocky dirt or gravel. 2 bathrooms, 1 with showers. Nice little small town nearby.

The 60-acre area draws its name from the mineral springs located there and in the heyday of the spas, Victoria’s waters were much acclaimed, and its spring water was bottled and sold throughout the United States. It was once part of the homestead of an early pioneer and Custer County judge Charles R. Mathews. Still on the site are the log cabins that Judge Mathews built— one as his home and the other as the first post office in Custer County.

    Guide to Halsey

Bessey Recreation Complex Campground and Natick Campground provide equestrian camping options within Nebraska's National Forest, situated in the unique Sandhills ecosystem. The forest area near Halsey stands as America's largest human-planted forest, containing over 20,000 acres of hand-planted pine and cedar trees amidst the native grasslands. Summer temperatures typically range from 75-90°F, while spring and fall bring milder conditions suitable for outdoor recreation.

    What to do

Climbing Scott Lookout Tower: Visit the fire tower at Bessey Recreation Complex Campground for panoramic views across the Sandhills. "The scott lookout tower can give you views across the Sandhills for miles upon miles on a clear day. Want stars at night? You can see them all," notes Justin R.

Paddle the Middle Loup River: The river runs adjacent to the campground, offering opportunities for water recreation. "We wanted to camp Nebraska's national forest for some time and we were not disappointed... Neighboring Thedford has Kayaks and Tanks you can rent. Tanking has become a Nebraska Thing. fitting a group of folks and possibly a keg in a horse tank and floating down river!" shares Charles C.

Explore the Tree Nursery: Learn about forest conservation at the on-site nursery. "Don't forget to check out the tree nursery. Pretty cool to see all the trees growing as seedlings," recommends Justin R. The nursery grows trees that maintain the forest ecosystem.

    What campers like

Spacious, shaded sites: Campers appreciate the well-designed layout at Bessey Recreation Complex. "Sites where roomy and nicely spaced out," mentions Jeremiah W., while Shannon G. adds, "The Rv sites are Electric and gravel and are fairly level. They have picnic tables and fire rings and are spacious. And of course plenty of shade since you are in a forest."

Wildlife viewing opportunities: The natural setting attracts diverse wildlife. Kelly L. notes, "Lots of pretty scenery and wildlife. Very peaceful. Nice trails. Big and deep fire pits with gravel pads and patios."

OHV and horse trails: The extensive trail system accommodates various recreational activities. "This location has the primitive feel with great facilities. If you want to stay to yourself you have plenty of space to do so," reports Jordan B.

    What you should know

Campground fills quickly on weekends: Plan accordingly, especially during summer. At Victoria Springs State Rec Area, "It fills up on the weekends but during the week you can have the entire campground to yourself. Beautiful trees, nice shade, and electrical hook-ups," advises Barry M.

Train noise at Bessey: Some campers note periodic train noise. "Bit of train noise during the day, but didn't really notice it overnight," reports Kelly L.

Limited bathroom facilities: "Clean bathrooms/bath house, but only 4 total stalls in the main camping area," mentions Kelly L., so plan accordingly during busy periods.

Natick primarily serves equestrians: The campground caters mainly to horse riders. "More of a rodeo center then a campground. The camp sites were nice but there was so much rodeo activity it made it a bit overwhelming," Jesse S. reports about Natick Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Overflow camping options: During peak times, consider alternative spots. "The camp was full to the brim. All sites with hookups were taken, but the overflow is an abandoned, overgrown baseball field. It was great, spacious, close to the showers and flush toilets, and only $8 a night!" advises Charles C.

Visit the historic cabins: At Victoria Springs State Rec Area, "Still on the site are the log cabins that Judge Mathews built—one as his home and the other as the first post office in Custer County," notes Tori K.

Paddle boat rentals: Victoria Springs offers family-friendly water activities. "You can rent paddle boats for the small lake," says Judy B., adding "The park has a basketball hoop, horseshoes, and a playground across the creek by the lake."

Roger W. notes about Bessey Recreation Complex: "Price 2024: $10 for electric sites and $15 for non-electric sites—both prices are w interagency pass... Current night and 3 nights out are first come first serve."

Rig size considerations: Larger RVs can be accommodated at select sites. "Large rigs fit in some sites... Most of them, our 26' trailer will fit in," advises Roger W.

Cell service information: Mobile connectivity varies by carrier. "Cell Service (AT&T): 2 to 3 bars," reports Roger W., while at Victoria Springs, Judy B. notes "Cell service available with both T-mobile/Mint (strongest) and Verizon/Visible."
