Powell Campground provides direct access to the Lochsa Wild and Scenic River, one of Idaho's most scenic waterways. The Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness lies on the opposite side of the river. The campground is within walking distance of a small general store, fuel, lodging and a restaurant. The Powell Ranger Station is nearby as well, but all visitor services have moved to Lolo Pass Visitor Center.
The Lochsa River provides visitors with opportunities for fishing and other water-related recreation. Cutthroat and rainbow trout, Chinook salmon and steelhead swim in the clear waters. The Lochsa is world-famous for its exciting whitewater rafting opportunities. A permit is not necessary to float the river, but technical expertise is a must. A variety of hiking and horseback riding trails are available in the wilderness area. The 1.5-mile Powell Complex Trail begins near the campground and leads west through cool, shady cedar and larch trees, making for a relaxing day trip. Hunting is also a popular activity in the rugged and primitive landscape. Highway 12, also known as the Lewis and Clark Highway, winds along the narrow river canyon through evergreen trees and past large rock outcroppings. Visitors enjoy the scenic drive and historic sites along the way.
Lochsa is a Nez Perce word meaning "rough water." The 70-mile river and its tributaries have no dams and the flow is unregulated from its headwaters near the Powell Ranger Station in the Bitterroots, to Lowell, where it joins the Selway River to form the Middle Fork of the Clearwater River. The Lochsa is one of the world's best for continuous whitewater. The campground is situated in a dense forest in north-central Idaho at an elevation of 3,400 feet. It is across the river from the border of the 1.5-million acre Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. Famed explorers Lewis and Clark passed through on their way to the Pacific Ocean in September of 1805. Elk, deer, moose, bear, cougar and mountain goats make the steep canyon country their home.
A variety of services are available in the rustic resort area near the campground including a general store, lodging, food and fuel. Fishing licenses are also available for purchase. The nearest free dump station is 40 miles west on Highway 12, at the Wilderness Gateway Campground.

This is a really fun spot a little ways off busy Hwy. 93. You got your mini golf, outdoor go carts, paddle boats, arcade, donkey petting, pizza and all level of camp sites - ‘dry’ non-water sites around $50-60/night, glamping yurt-like structures (more expensive) and cabins (higher wallet sucking). The dry sites are in a pretty forest area a bit off from all the shiny, gigantic RVs (this is Whitefish after all), so that’s a nice touch. This is a light-hearted, full service and colorful spot, though scenically not an ‘A’ in this gorgeous of a state and not all that budget friendly if your idea of a good time doesn’t involve pinball or Skittles.

We’ve been camping at Sloway for years because I love hearing the trains all night long! If you don’t like train and highway noise, stay far away!
While my hubby flyfishes, I float on the Clark Fork. You can put in right from your campsite, the beach by the pullthru sites, Dry Creek or Superior, then float to your campsite/beach, St Regis, or 14 Mile/Ferry Landing.
GuideWonderful little campground located just south of Whitefish Montana on highway 93. This KOA has a lot to offer from cabins to RV parking and several tent camping locations. Just a few minutes drive north and you will enter the small ski town of Whitefish Montana. Plenty of places to eat, shop or buy your groceries. During the summer months be sure to visit Whitefish Lake. 20 minute drive east and you will arrive in West Glacier Park. This RV park is located in a wooded area and is very family friendly with a local pizzeria on site.

The pond is small and prone to very dense algae blooms. Campsites are very close in and very busy by Montana standards. Good for a quick jaunt out for one night if you don't mind making new friends but it isn't a good place for an extended stay. Speaking as a former member of these hooligans, it's a common spot for high school students to be hooligans.
ScoutThis KOA is conveniently located for a quick overnight stop. We were passing through Montana and needed a full hookup site to rest and recharge before another long day of driving. The camp staff was very friendly and accommodating, even with our late arrival. It’s located a couple blocks off a busy road packed with shopping options which was a plus for someone passing through, but it might not be the best place for someone looking for an extended stay with scenery.

Powell Campground is a beautiful campground just over the Montana border on Hwy 12 right alongside the Lochsa River. There are two loops of campsites tent and RV pull in or back in camping with electricity that can accommodate up to a 45 ft camper. An amphitheater, large group campsite, picnic area, beautiful walking trails and most of all the beautiful Lochsa Lodge. A market with the friendliest people, cabins to rent and of course the beautiful Lochsa River. Lewis and Clark camped along the Lochsa and walked right through the campground.Deer, Elk and Bear sightings are common.
ScoutI have camped @ Sloway for many years. The setting on the Clark Fork River is fantastic, especially for the 4-5 campsites that have river frontage. The I-90 highway runs fairly close to the campground & the noise can be distracting at times. The bigger noise maker is the train that runs on the other side of the Clark Fork River. There are two road crossings across from the campground, and the trains are required to blow their horns when approaching these crossings. This can be annoying when the railroad is running a lot of trains during the night. The campground is very clean & usually only crowded on the holidays.

The campground itself is just what we look for. Beautiful setting. Wooded for shade. Generous spacing Between sights. Water, in this case the Clark Forks River. Nice host and campers. Shopping (in case we need provisions) without driving far, in this case St. Regis. If we xome back through this was, we will come prepared and give it a try.

ScoutIf you’re looking for family friendly, this is your spot. Lots of kids activities. Free breakfast. Washrooms, showers and laundry facility available. Scenically, it’s not very pretty. Sites are very close together with little privacy. Our spot was so small we couldn’t fit our tent, picnic table and fire pit in it. We had to park somewhere else, and move the picnic table our. If you prefer exploring nature and quiet, this isn’t the park for you.
TravelerThis unassuming park was a delight. Lots of trees, quiet, lovely hosts. Sights 17-20 are the gem of the bunch, particularly 19. We stayed here and at West Glacier KOA and I’d come back here in a heartbeat. This was really our style - incorporated in to the local environment, not overly landscaped, and large sites.
RangerWhat a beautiful place to be and to camp. Mountains surround you everywhere you look. Kalispell is such a wonderful little town that is surrounded by so much outdoor activity. This is a great place to camp because there are so many different activities you can participate in. Hiking is great here. I would suggest looking up places to hike near Kalispell and Whitefish. The lake at Whitefish is one of my favorites. People are kayaking, boating, SUP, swimming, and so much more. If you have a boat, I would recommend brining it here. We found a great picnic area with a dock and hung out here all day. The weather was perfect. Within Kalispell there are some great places to eat. There is a sandwich shop in town that is incredible. They have cinnamon rolls that are gigantic, and super yummy. They have gluten free options which I needed. Highly recommend coming here. Right across the street is a yummy ice cream shop (they have dog ice cream too for your 4 legged friend!). Great town to walk in if you aren't planning on doing any hiking.
Scoutwe planned a last minute trip (2weeks in advance) to Glacier NP in mid July. These guys still had tent sites available for the four nights we wanted. it’s a bit of a trek to the NP (40 minutes) but it’s not horrible time.
our site was nice and tucked off in the trees on the edge, but near the showers. they also provide free breakfast in the morning. newish washers/dryers were great too since we were starting a two week trip.
would definitely stay again if we couldn’t get something closer to Glacier.
we didn’t use the pool or hot tub but they looked nice and clean. they have a nImber of games outside and vIdeo games If you need entertaInment. the showers were good, lots of hot water.
GuideGreat Location, they have several different camping locations to pick from. You can rent a cabin, ground tent sight or normal back in parking. Half of the camping spots are covered with pine trees. Great little place to eat (pizza) on location.
TravelerYou certainly won’t get bored here. There are lots of things to keep the kids busy so you don’t even have to leave the campground. The store, laundry and bathhouse were all nice. I was a bit nervous about navigating this place though. The loops were tight and the sites very close. Most sites will need work to level campers. We picked the wrong weekend to visit as it was full! It was pretty noisy and very busy all evening. On a more quiet weekend, I would love to visit again.
