    Choteau Mountain View RV Campground

    Great price for amenities!

We found this campsite on our way to Glacier National Park when we needed a tent site for the evening. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Only $22 for a site without electric hookups or $24 for one that does. The campground is very clean and offers showers, restrooms, laundry, dishwashing station, picnic table, cooking grill, fire pits, and WiFi included.

    Lewis & Clark RV Park

    Good Overnighter

No issues getting to this campground (CG)— it’s right off I-15, making access simple and straightforward. There’s plenty of RV parking at the office, and check-in was friendly, quick, and easy. We were escorted to pull-through site 31 with full hookups (FHUs). All sites in this CG are pull-throughs, arranged in a large outer and inner circle layout. Utilities are centrally located on the pad, making it easy to position them to suit your setup. Water pressure was strong— we used a pressure reducer. The picnic table and yard are on the driver’s side, but it works well in this setup. We had solid connectivity: 4 bars on both T-Mobile and Verizon. The CG’s 5G Guest Wi-Fi was surprisingly good, delivering 124 Mbps download and 10.2 Mbps upload. Our T-Mobile home internet hit 28 Mbps download. The CG also sells propane and has a clean, well-maintained laundry facility. Overall, this spot was good for an overnight stay before heading into Canada.

    Choteau City Park

    What a great spot

I was presently surprised by this spot! It is pretty much in town, on the outskirts. There is a dump station and a spot to get drinking water. There’s shady spots and pull through ones. There’s a huge spot that would be able to accommodate the largest motorhome with a trailer, it’s huge! You can pay online, there is a $1 fee. The creek runs through and it’s so calm and pretty. The park is attached so it’s fun for the kiddos. Worth a visit!

    Willow Creek Campground

Pay sites and free dispersed area both

The 6 miles between where the pavement ends and when you reach the main paid camping area is so washboarded, I thought I was going to lose my mind. But we and our 26ft class c survived with no broken bits.

The main camping area is nice, but pricey in my opinion at $18/night. Each spot is along the water and comes with a nice flat pad to park on, fire pit, picnic table, and shade structure. There are pit toilets as well. No other amenities. We chose to keep going, mainly because $18 felt like too much money. The road is not so washboarded when you leave the campground, and we did ok driving around the lake for about a mile until we found one of the free dispersed sites. No amenities here, of course, other than some home made rock fire pits. Each spot is really private and segregated from the next spot.

The lake was nice and cool and refreshing to swim in when we arrived on a hot July day. No cell service here. The ATT phone had a bit of service, and with the cell booster was even able to stream. The Verizon phone had nothing. Lots of mosquitoes here, swarms of them at dusk when you’re trying to enjoy the beautiful sunset.

    Choteau Mountain View RV Campground

    Nice Family Run Campground

This is a former KOA campground that was purchased by a family. We stayed her in the summer of 2018 during a very hot spell. We didn't have reservations and fit onto a site (#22) with a nice view of the distant mountains. Restrooms were always clean, even very early in the morning. We stayed two times. The second time we again didn't have reservations and they were expecting a large influx of families for a baseball tournament. They put us in the large RV area and we were grateful for accommodation. They have a small mini-golf area, picnic tables at the sites, and full hookups (as expected). They also have laundry facilities.

    Lake Shel-oole Campground

A decent place to stop over on your trip to or return from Canada

My wife and I stopped at Lake Shel-Oole Campground on our trip to Canada this summer (July 3rd). The campground is a bit dilapidated, but had several spots available that were easy to pull into. Some sites were pull through and others were back in. Most sites have at least electric and some are water/electric. Some sites are also 50amp. There is also a dump on site.

All sites are $25/night. Payment is on an honor system and drop cash into an envelope in a box near the entrance. The park says that it is under surveillance, but we did not see cameras. We saw one Toole County Sheriff's Deputy drive through the park while we were there.

I think we counted a total of five other rigs staying the night with us. If you have kids there's a playground nearby and a baseball field. There are also several walking trails.

We would definitely stay here again if we take the same route to Canada. Very convenient and quiet!

    Lake Shel-oole Campground

    Clean, decent campground

This is a clean respectable camping area. No privacy between sites, but they are level and a good deal for $25/night. Our site had electric hookups with water nearby. I don't think there was a camphost. Some large pull throughs and smaller back ins. Playfields are nearby and we heard the happy sound of kids playing in the background. Bathroom/showers were basic but clean.

    Wood Lake

Great campground tucked in the moutains with new picnic tables

Wood Lake Campground located at the south end of Wood Lake is an awesome campground tucked in the mountains near the Bob Marshal Wilderness Complex. One of the nicest things about this campground it the new shinny (very shinny) concrete picnic tables. These are the nicest picnic tables I have ever seen in a campground. The 12 campsites sit mostly in a stand of mature fir and lodge pole pine. The sites are roomy, each having the new picnic table and a metal fire ring. The campground has two vault toilets and a hand pump. It was windy during our visit so we picked site 6 at the south end of the campground, the trees blocked most of the wind. A hiking trail head is located in the campground. The campsites were listed at $6 per night, but a notice was up announcing a future change to $10 per night, still a great deal for such a nice campground. Although we visited in the off season (October) It appears that this is a Pack-in/Pack-out campground.

Guide to Bynum

Located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountain Front at approximately 3,900 feet elevation, the Bynum area experiences strong winds and temperature fluctuations common to this transition zone between mountains and plains. Winter temperatures frequently drop below zero, while summer camping season typically runs from late May through September.

What to do

Bird watching excursions: Freezout Lake Wildlife Management Area provides prime habitat for migratory waterfowl. "If you enjoy bird watching then you are in luck, plenty can be found at the lake and ponds," notes one Freezout Lake Dispersed Camping visitor.

Hiking local trails: The Choteau area offers access to several walking paths with mountain views. "If you follow the bike trail it will take you to a paved exercise trail," mentions a camper at Lake Shel-oole Campground, which is located about 45 miles north of Bynum.

Fishing opportunities: Multiple water bodies near Bynum allow for fishing, though water levels fluctuate seasonally. "There is a fishing dock, although when we were here the lake water was pretty low," reports a Lake Shel-oole visitor.

Mini-golf and yard games: Some campgrounds offer recreational activities on-site. "They have a small mini-golf area," notes a reviewer about Choteau Mountain View RV Campground, adding that "they also have laundry facilities."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain their amenities despite rural locations. "Restrooms were always clean, even very early in the morning," writes one Choteau Mountain View camper, while another notes that the campground has "spotless bathrooms and showers."

Stargazing conditions: The area's limited light pollution creates ideal night sky viewing. A Freezout Lake camper describes it as "quiet and perfect for star gazing," though advises to "bring bug spray" due to mosquitoes.

Wildlife viewing: Prairie wildlife is abundant at many campsites. "Lots of prairie dogs and bunnies to entertain our four legged camper," mentions a visitor at Lewis & Clark RV Park in Shelby.

Weather considerations: The area's climate features notable temperature variations. "Nice breeze at night even in a heat wave," reports a Choteau Mountain View camper about summer conditions, while another visitor mentions enjoying "the walking trail at the top of the park" with "wonderful views."

What you should know

Mosquito presence: Standing water areas attract insects during warmer months. "By 9pm I had to retire to my camper because the mosquitoes were so bad," warns a Freezout Lake camper.

Wind exposure: The region experiences significant wind, particularly at exposed sites. "Another thing to note are the heavy winds, just make sure you don't leave things out, and expect a windy breakfast," advises a camper at Freezout Lake.

Campfire restrictions: Rules vary between campgrounds. "The major down fall is no campfires," notes a visitor at Pondera RV Park in Conrad, while other locations permit them.

Dump station availability: Not all sites offer sewer connections. "No sewage hookups, but they do have a dump station," reports a visitor at Shelby RV Park & Resort, noting the $25 nightly rate during their stay.

Tips for camping with families

Town amenities: Some campgrounds offer convenient access to local facilities. "Across the street is 2 city parks and city pool," mentions a Pondera RV Park visitor about the Conrad location.

Playground access: Several campgrounds provide recreational areas for children. "Lake Shel-oole Campground offers a plenty to do. There are baseball diamonds, a nice little dog run with a couple of obstacles," writes a visitor.

Budget-friendly options: Free camping exists for families watching expenses. "If you wish to camp here be prepared for more of a disperse camping experience. While the site does have a vault toilet that is about it," explains a Freezout Lake visitor about the free camping area.

Site spacing considerations: Campground layouts vary considerably. "Camper sites were very close together," notes one Choteau Mountain View visitor, indicating limited privacy at some developed rv sites near Bynum, Montana.

Tips from RVers

Water hookup locations: Some campgrounds have unusual utility placements. "Make sure you have a long water hose as some of the water connections are far away," advises a visitor at Shelby RV Park.
