    Choteau City Park

    Great for overnight stay

There are two loops on either side of a small creek, a dry side and a shaded grassy side. There is also a terrific dog park just down the road within walking distance. Great for an overnight and a great price.

    Lake Shel-oole Campground

Lake, Trails and so much more

Lake Shel-oole Campground is a hidden gem in Shelby, Montana! This campground offers a plenty to do. There are baseball diamonds, a nice little dog run with a couple of obstacles, a fishing dock (although when we were here the lake water was pretty low) and biking trails. If you follow the bike trail it will take you to a paved exercise trail. The facilities are well-maintained, the showers are nice and hot, and the staff is friendly and accommodating. Whether you're traveling in an RV or setting up a tent, the spacious sites provide comfort and convenience. It's an ideal spot.

    Bean Lake

    Bean Lake

Bean Lake is a Montana FWP fishing access site. The 200 acre lake lying along the edge of the Rocky Mountain Front near the Scapegoat Wilderness. Their are two access points to the lake with in the FAS, each has an outhouse. Their is a boat ramp to the lake. The primary fish species in the lake are rainbow trout, which are planted each year by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department.

If you plan to fish Bean Lake, the odds are high you’ll have the lake to yourself. Few people ever bother to visit this remote lake.

Montana FWP list the site as having 8 sites, but it just looks like a dispersed camping area. Found only one picnic table and the only fire rings were made from rocks. Camping appears to be free as their are no signs or fee stations. You have to look carefully to find the camping areas due to their being no signs. Once you spot the lake look for the outhouses. You are out in the open at this FAS not a tree to be seen. No water (except for what is in the lake) and no trash bins.

    Choteau Mountain View RV Campground

    Nice and quiet

A very nice stopover. The park is well-kept. Hookups worked well. Spacious setup. Loved the walking trail at the top of the park. Grocery just down the street. Very quiet and dark at night. Very friendly host. Nice laundry. Good wifi, adequate cell coverage for Verizon and AT&T. Stayed several days to explore the area where the prairie meets the Rocky Mountains. Lots of dirt road, but wonderful views. Also visited the waterfowl area and Freezout Lake. Very Montana.

    Benchmark

Access two wilderness areas from once campsite

Benchmark campground allows the hiker or horse rider access to two wilderness areas from the adjacent trail head.  This 25 site campground is set up for camping with or with out horses.  The area has several horse corrals and parking for horse trailers.  Some of the campsites are right next to the horse corrals, but many are far from those corrals.  Each site features a picnic table and metal fire ring.  Sites are well spread apart.  Cost is $10 per night, plus $5 more for a second vehicle.  Campground has two water pumps and vault toilets.  The adjacent trail head is for Straight Creek Trail #212, which will have you in the Bob Marshall Wilderness in a matter of minutes, and if you continue down the trail you will enter the  Scapegoat Wilderness.

    Lake Shel-oole Campground

Pleasant Municipal Campground Near Glacier National Park

An hour and a half east of the St. Mary entrance to Glacier National Park--great when you are (like us) headed east after a long day in the park--this municipal campground exceeded expectations.  A pleasant, well-maintained loop of sites, many with electricity and some with water (although the spigots, on some sites, were bizarrely distant from the normal location near the electrical box, requiring long hoses).  Set in the area below the dam for Lake Shel-oole, with access to the lake from the campground loop.  The lake was low during our stay, so not clear what activities might be available when the water is higher.  Well patrolled, with a bathhouse in the center of the loop, old-school but serviceable, containing flush toilets and hot showers. Relatively far from any highways and train tracks, so (for this part of the world, and unlike many commercial campgrounds) was very  quiet.

    Lewis & Clark RV Park

    Clean Quiet Safe Friendly

Pulled in late evening twilight. Nestled in a hill pocket. Unassuming looks but what matters is the vibe and amenities for the price. New owners. Sites are tidy. Full and partial hookups. Sewer dump. Shining star is the bathroom and shower house. Clean. Updated and hot hot water if you like a nice hot shower. Quiet campers. Yard games available and large area to walk the dogs. Definitely stop here if I travel west again.

    Lewis & Clark RV Park

    Dirty and Pricey.

$25 for a tent site. Tents are thrown behind the main office directly in the beam of a security light that stays on all night. The picnic are covered in bird poop. They do have showers and they were clean and comfortable. Close to the highway so traffic noise slowed down around 10pm. Not our favorite stop but convenient when fling in or out of Glacier.

    South Fork

Camp and access the Bob Marshall by foot or horse.

South Fork Campground located at the end of Benchmark road is one of the campgrounds to use for accessing the Bob Marshall Wilderness.  This seven site campground and trail head gives the hiker and horseback rider a pleasant campground with plenty of room for horse trailer parking, corrals for the horses and campsites with picnic tables and metal fire rings.  Campground has water available and vault toilets.  ADA sites as well.  Campground sits next to one of the more popular access points for the Bob Marshall Wilderness area and the Continental Divide Trail.  Most of the campsites sit under large pine and fir trees.  Sites are well spread apart.  Your proximity to horse corrals varies by site and if horses are present.

What you should know

Site fees vary: Camping costs range from free to moderate across the area. "Not a free campsite... 1 open bathroom. 10 open sites arriving at 6PM on 4th of July weekend. Reservoir is very low. Enjoyed having the whole campsite to ourselves. Did not expect the $18 fee," reports a Bynum visitor.

Limited water access: Water levels fluctuate seasonally at reservoirs. "Lake drying up. Beautiful and isolated. Chilly on May 15th," notes a Bynum camper.

Mosquitoes: Evening insects can be problematic, especially near water. "I took a star off because by 9pm I had to retire to my camper because the mosquitoes were so bad - but that's to be expected," warns a visitor to Freezout Lake.

Tips for RVers

Utility hookups: Several campgrounds provide essential services for RVs. "Level sites, spotless bathrooms and showers, laundry room, camp store and even mini golf. We would absolutely stay here again," notes a visitor to Choteau Mountain View RV Campground.

Road conditions: Access roads to some sites require caution. "Road signage is less than desirable. Probably 2 miles from highway. Road condition is good gravel," advises a Willow Creek Campground visitor.

Pet-friendly accommodations: Most campgrounds welcome pets with standard regulations. "Open area near campground good for bigger rigs creek nearby," reports a visitor to Ear Mountain Dispersed camping area, which provides options for those traveling with pets.
