Rocky Springs Campground provides tent campsites near Port Gibson, Mississippi within the Natchez Trace Parkway system. Seasonal temperatures range from winter lows around 35°F to summer highs reaching 95°F with high humidity.
What to do
Historic exploration: The abandoned town site and cemetery at Rocky Springs Campground offer glimpses into local history. "Took my two sons on our first camping trip here. There are quite a few hiking trails and none are too difficult even for my 4 y.o. The main trail, where the town used to be was awesome. There are several old structures left behind and info plaques that tells the story on all of it," notes Ben M.
Creek exploration: The small stream behind the amphitheater area provides cooling water access during hot months. "We love the trails, walking in the creek, and exploring the old town site of Rocky Springs, especially the cemetery," shares Michael L.
Biking opportunities: The Natchez Trace Parkway offers paved routes suitable for road cycling directly from camp. "Just of the Natchez Trace parkway, which is nice for biking and scenic drives. A small trail takes a tour of the remains of a ghost town," explains Gregory H.
What campers like
Wildlife viewing: Early morning and dusk provide opportunities to spot deer and other wildlife. "Saw deer in the campgrounds on my last visit," reports Gregory H. from Black River Campsite.
Site spacing: Tent sites provide adequate separation for privacy and group camping. "Great sites with plenty of room between them. You can easily set two or three tents without having to worry about disturbing other campers," states Garrett H.
Peace and quiet: Despite occasional traffic along the loop road, the campground maintains a generally tranquil atmosphere. "Very quiet and peaceful place," shares Cheri H., who adds details about the water feature: "I did walk down to the water that is behind the amphitheater and it was pretty."
What you should know
Water limitations: Recent reports indicate inconsistent water availability. "I'm assuming due to covid though there isn't running water in the restrooms and showers aren't accessible either," notes Mic F. from a 2022 visit to Rocky Springs Campground.
Limited connectivity: Cell service is minimal but sufficient for basic communication needs. "1 bar Verizon, not enough to load any GPS or internet but you can squeeze a message out," reports Twan M.
Facility status: Bathroom facilities vary in condition and availability. "The bathroom(s) aren't great, but they work!" mentions Twan M., while Cheri H. notes "There are two bathroom facilities and the third has been boarded up for years."
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly trails: Multiple short hiking paths accommodate young children. "There are quite a few hiking trails and none are too difficult even for my 4 y.o.," confirms Ben M., whose experience with Rocky Springs Campground suggests trails are manageable for families.
Water preparedness: Arrive with full water tanks and containers. "Have your fresh water tank full when you arrive. There is no water available other than the sinks and flush toilets in the bathrooms," advises Cheri H.
Historical education: The site provides educational opportunities through interpretive signage. "Me and my family came here with our tent and had a blast. We explored the old church and what's left of the city. There is a lot to do for such a small campground," shares Zack K.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Most camping spots accommodate both tent and RV camping. "There are probably 20-25 sites, most if not all are large enough for RVs or pull-behind rigs. Above ground fire pits, BBQ grills and picnic tables at most sites, off of the paved parking area(s)," reports Twan M. from Rocky Springs Campground.
Waste management: No dump station is available on-site. "And don't show up with a full tank of grey and black water because there isn't a dump station," warns Cheri H., noting this is "Not an issue for me as I travel in a small motorhome."
Arrival timing: Holiday weekends require early arrival to secure spots. "I believe it is first come first serve, so get there early on holiday weekends," recommends Ruth E.
