Lake Lowndes State Park Campground provides waterfront cabin camping near Crawford, Mississippi. Located about 25 miles from Crawford, this year-round destination offers sites for RVs, tents, and glamping accommodations. The park sits on a 150-acre lake at approximately 220 feet elevation, with mild winters and humid summers typical of northeast Mississippi. Waterways in the region connect to the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway system, creating opportunities for boating, paddling, and fishing.
What to do
Disc golf course for all skill levels: Lake Lowndes State Park Campground maintains a popular disc golf course that draws visitors year-round. "The park has a beautiful small lake for boating, fishing, and other water sports as well. Other things to do include an amazing frisbee golf course, tennis courts, softball fields, children's playground, hiking, biking, and a huge admin building with many indoor games like pool and ping pong," according to Richard W.
Hiking and nature trails: The park offers several walking trails for wildlife viewing. "The hiking trail that loops around the water is beautiful. My dog loves it too! It's such a great place to go relax, have fun, grill out, and make memories," shares Tiffany B.
Fishing from shore or boat: Dewayne Hayes Campground offers excellent fishing access on the Tombigbee Waterway. "We camped in a tent on site 88. Right on the tombigbee," notes Tommie. Many sites have direct water access for fishing or launching kayaks directly from your campsite.
What campers like
Waterfront views: Many sites at Lake Lowndes offer direct views of the water. "We tent camped in the RV park with 4 dogs. Our campsite (10) was perfect - right on the water, plenty of space, nice even pad for our tent & canopy," writes Devan T.
Wildlife watching opportunities: Town Creek Campground provides excellent wildlife viewing. "Our stay at site 82 from 3/12/21-3/14/21 is filled with the sounds of people working and playing. During the week, we enjoy watching pilots from the Columbus Air Force Base honing their skills. The barges, more frequent during the day, have the occasional after dark run," notes Cyndi H.
Clean facilities: Most campgrounds in the area maintain clean facilities. "The bathhouse was clean, but very rundown," according to Terry P. at Lake Lowndes. At other nearby campgrounds, campers note improved amenities: "Clean bath houses with showers, beautiful lake with a small beach," reports Gregory H.
What you should know
Seasonal flooding concerns: Some areas experience periodic flooding. "This is local to us and we've been a few times. The last time however a barge flooded the area. Caused some shut downs," notes Marissa G. about Dewayne Hayes.
Ant problems at some sites: Choctaw Lake and other area campgrounds sometimes have ant issues. At Lake Lowndes, one camper reported: "At about 4:00 am, we awoke to find ants invading the trailer. The outside of the trailer was covered with thousands of ants and they were pouring into the trailer."
Cell service varies by location: Coverage can be spotty throughout the region. At Choctaw Lake, campers report "No WiFi and very little cell signal, as camping should be." This varies by carrier and location.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Starkville KOA and other area campgrounds offer amenities for children. "Unfortunately the lake has mostly dried up and no longer hits the shoreline of the campground. They used to have what looked like an awesome beach area, water slides, boat ramps etc... but it has all fallen into disrepair," Chuck S. notes. Families should verify current playground conditions.
Kid-friendly water access: Lake Lowndes offers swimming areas perfect for children. "This campground is very pretty and peaceful. They have a nice playground for the younger kids and disc golf for the older kids. And the lake is great for fishing and kayaking," Linda O. shares.
Reserve early for prime sites: The best waterfront sites fill quickly, especially during peak seasons. "One of my favorite campgrounds. Best to make reservations on line it fills up fast on weekends," advises Steve M.
Tips from RVers
Site spacing considerations: Town Creek Campground offers varied site spacing. "RV spots are suitable for car camping, although a bit close together with bright street lights and showers are outdated. Still, the camp host treated me kindly, and I enjoyed the scenery and walkability!" notes Lindsey M.
Full hookup availability: Most campgrounds offer water and electric, but full hookups are limited. "Nice spacing between sites and a nice dispersion of FHU sites with electric & water sites. Gave people the option of choosing either and allowed us to still group camp," Rick G. reports about Dewayne Hayes.
Level sites: Most RV sites in the region are paved and level. "Sites are paved, large and very easy to back into. We have stayed at #43, #41, #1, #31 and #35 and we love them all," Richard W. shares about Lake Lowndes. Popular sites fill quickly, so advance reservations are recommended.
