      Tishomingo State Park Campground

      Beautiful

I’m so glad I’ve finally checked this campsite off the list! It is a beautiful CCC camp that was built in the 1930s. It has primitive site, hookups, cabins and wall tents. There are lots of activities to do as well. It was sad to see some of the buildings in disrepair and I wish the bathrooms could get an upgrade. Be sure to check out the swinging bridge! There’s also disk golf!

      Davis Lake Campground

      “Literally lake front camping!”

Davis Lake Recreation Area is situated just 4 miles from the Natchez Trace Parkway. The campground is adjacent to the Eastern shore of the 200 acre Davis Lake. 14 sites are right on the lake front offering spectacular sun rises and evening sun sets, The lake is known to anglers, and wildlife and birds are a given…we had a Great Blue Heron"friend" during our entire stay. The sites were level, paved, and all had nice spacing, picnic tables, fire pits and well cared for electric service (50 amp) and water. Bathhouses were clean and laundry was available. Dump Station. Plenty of historic places to visit in the area and groceries are available in Houlka just 4 miles away. We visited in late September with only 6 sites in use…felt like we had the place to ourselves…and being located in the Tombigbee National Forest there was no light pollution making the night sky a spectacular sight to see.

      Davis Lake Campground

      Love it

As luck would have it, we spotted this place on our Natchez Trace Parkway map and decided we had enough driving for the day. Beautiful setting among the trees and right next to the lake. Level, fire pits, charcoal grills, picnic tables, water and electric all for 20.00 a night and we didn’t qualify for any discount. Already decided we’re staying another night!

Dismals Canyon Cabins and Primitive Campsites

Great choice for Visitors of Dismals Canyon

We stayed in early August for 2 nights in the Sleeping Waters campground.

We got there pretty late (after dark) for setting up camp, and I do not recommend doing that. It's about a quarter of a mile walk to the campsite, but the site is absolutely gorgeous! Very secluded and very roomy! The waterfall at the campsite is not large, but it still makes noise.

After we got everything set up and got all the lights out, we noticed the glowing dismalites along the Canyon wall behind our tent!! It was super cool. We also had a creek flowing with crawdads, minnows, and bull frogs. Plenty of wildlife!!

The canyon was pretty cool! The waterfalls were awesome and I loved all the spur trails. Disclaimer: be prepared to get your feet wet!!

The Canyon and campsite were pet friendly. Dogs were even welcome in the country store!! Just not in the seating area for the Soda Fountain.

I have few, minor complaints.. 1) I booked this campsite earlier in the year (early spring, I believe). I specifically wanted a night tour. They did not tell me that they wouldn't have night tours at that time of year. I wish I would've known, as I would've planned the trip for spring or fall. 2) the gate to get into the Canyon after hours for the bath house was difficult to operate. I'd pinch the code in and it wouldn't open. It would take several tries. The gate for the campsite area worked great! 3) The gate leading to the campsites was not marked. At night, it was challenging to determine where to park. 4) In the Canyon itself, not all of the landmarks were marked!! We had a map, but we had never been there before, so we weren't able to find everything easily.

      Lake Lowndes State Park Campground

      Amazing, Enjoyable Experience

Lake Lowndes is simply a place that every camper (primitive or RV) has to visit.  The staff from the ranger to the park host to the manager and everyone else is friendly and ready to help in any way.  The sites are paved, large and very easy to back into.  We have stayed at #43, #41, #1, #31 and #35 and we love them all.  31, 41, and 43 are the best.  There used to be an ant problem but the staff has fixed that tremendously - good job.  The park has a beautiful small lake for Boating, fishing, and other water sports as well.  Other things to do include an amazing frisbee golf course, tennis courts, softball fields, children’s playground, hiking, biking, and a huge admin building with many indoor games like pool and ping pong. The scenery is magnificent and we fell in love with the ducks, geese, and deer families that run around every night.  Picnic tables, grills, and fire pits at every site.  Do yourself a favor and visit this camp ground.

      Tishomingo State Park Campground

      Peaceful Camping!

We've visited Tishomingo State Park twice in the last few months.  The first was in February when we stayed at the cabins.  They have big porches, a kitchen, bathroom, and two beds which was perfect for two couples to visit.  They are quite old, but it adds to the charm of the cabins.  We had a fire in the fire pit at night, played disc golf, hiked, and walked down to the river to sit a bit.  Such a nice weekend!

Easter weekend we took our camper to Tishomingo State Park.  It was a lovely time despite the rain on Friday night!  We spent one afternoon playing disc golf and hiking.  The hiking trails are lovely!  Our dog enjoyed it too.  On Easter weekend, there is a huge Easter egg hunt for children which drew a lot of people.

      Davis Lake Campground

      Easy rv camping

We took our 23 foot forest river TT on its maiden voyage here in mid June. It was easy to navigate even though it was dark. Nice level site. There is 30 and 50 amp electric and good water pressure.

We stayed in site 18 by the water, most lakeside sites are about 20 feet from shore, and are mostly grass besides the driveway and tent pad. While we loved the campground we probably wouldn’t go back to this site. There were 2 knockdown trees in front of the site, which made fishing hard. There was also a beehive in the tree close to the fire pit.

The sites away from the water looked to be uneven and on a slope so beware if you take an rv.

There is a swimming beach, a pier, and plenty of place to tie up a boat. We plan to return and explore some more!

      Tishomingo State Park Campground

      Such a beautiful park!

We stayed on site 61. The spaces are all on or near the water. There’s plenty of wood to gather for campfires. The park has beautiful hiking trails and the ride down the Natchez Trace Parkway to get there is a must take drive, free of red lights, billboards and traffic with many amazing points of interest along the way. Highly recommend!

      Tishomingo State Park Campground

      Tranquil and serene

We went camping here in May 2019 before Memorial Day and it was so peaceful and beautiful. We were fortunate enough to get a spot right on the lake.

It is such a perfect place to get away from it all.

We were there for 5days . We got on the Natchez Trace parkway. Also we went to Tupelo.

The bathrooms were not very clean but we were there off season and had a skeleton crew. But the park itself was beautifully decorated. They also have disc golf.

Make sure you bring bug spray and check for ticks.

If you have a bike it’s a great place to ride.

Please consider going there the town itself had a tornado go through it and could really use the tourism. I called the park and they said the park itself was not touched by the tornado and had no damage.

It is the perfect park to social distance the spots are not close to each other.

    Guide to Amory

Cabin camping options near Amory, Mississippi feature concrete pads and water access at several Corps of Engineers campgrounds along the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. The region sits at approximately 300 feet elevation with a humid subtropical climate characterized by mild winters and hot summers. Seasonal temperature fluctuations affect camping conditions, with summer highs often reaching 90°F while winter lows can drop to 30°F.

    What to do

Waterway fishing access: Dewayne Hayes Campground provides direct access to the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway for fishing opportunities. "We launch and paddle from our site. The walking path is about 3 miles round trip from the day-use boat ramp and playground to the campground end," notes a visitor to Dewayne Hayes Campground.

Wildlife observation: Trace State Park offers excellent opportunities for bird watching and wildlife viewing from lakeside sites. "The sites are level, paved, and all had nice spacing, picnic tables, fire pits and well cared for electric service (50 amp) and water," writes one camper about similar waterfront sites at Davis Lake Campground.

Disc golf courses: Lake Lowndes State Park features multiple disc golf courses for outdoor recreation. "Other things to do include an amazing frisbee golf course, tennis courts, softball fields, children's playground, hiking, biking, and a huge admin building with many indoor games like pool and ping pong," shares a visitor to Lake Lowndes State Park Campground.

    What campers like

Level lakeside sites: Trace State Park Campground offers direct lake access from well-maintained sites. "Our site backed up to the lake and was beautiful! Lots of activities and has a marina. Fishing was great," reports a camper at Trace State Park Campground.

Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain clean bathroom facilities despite heavy use. "Bathrooms were A+++ clean! No showers due to covid. Loved that almost all spot were right at the water edge. Literally. All types of birds to watch. Squirrels too," notes a visitor to Davis Lake Campground.

Working waterway traffic: The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway provides unique viewing opportunities. "During the week, we enjoy watching pilots from the Columbus Air Force Base honing their skills. The barges, more frequent during the day, have the occasional after dark run. They are fascinating to watch and quite pretty at night," according to a camper at Town Creek Campground.

    What you should know

Road conditions: Several campgrounds report road maintenance issues. "The roads in the park are terrible! That's the one downside to the park," mentions a visitor to Trace State Park Campground. Another adds, "access roads need replacing, sketchy cell service."

Cell service limitations: Coverage varies significantly between campgrounds. "Very little Verizon Signal if any at times. Really out of the way about 30 minutes from NTP and about 40 minutes from Tupelo," notes a visitor to Piney Grove.

Seasonal ant activity: Some campsites experience seasonal pest issues. "At about 4:00 am, we awoke to find ants invading the trailer. The outside of the trailer was covered with thousands of ants and they were pouring into the trailer. A park employee came in the afternoon and sprayed all entry points around the trailer," warns a Lake Lowndes State Park visitor.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds offer playground facilities for children. "They have a nice playground for the younger kids and disc golf for the older kids. And the lake is great for fishing and kayaking," advises a Lake Lowndes camper.

Scout-friendly terrain: The relatively flat terrain works well for group camping. "We went in April with our scouting troop. Very busy even then. Lots of small hiking trails. Nothing too fancy. Dollar general 10 minutes down the road if you need anything. Several primitive sites," shares a visitor to Dewayne Hayes Campground.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Many campgrounds offer easy wildlife spotting for children. "The scenery is magnificent and we fell in love with the ducks, geese, and deer families that run around every night," according to a Lake Lowndes visitor.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection challenges: Choose carefully when reserving glamping close to Amory, Mississippi. "The sites away from the water looked to be uneven and on a slope so beware if you take an RV," warns a Davis Lake visitor.

Pad length accuracy: Verify site dimensions before booking. "The pad lengths on the reservations website seemed to be accurate. In our opinion, the only pull through that would fit a 40' 5th wheel was site 73. The rest of the pull throughs were the half moon shaped type with too sharp of internal turn and/or trees to deal with," notes a camper at Piney Grove.

Arrival timing: Consider weekday arrivals at popular campgrounds. "As this was a Friday and based on our experience going to state parks/COEs at the end of the season when the weather is really nice, we went in early so we could get ahead of the weekend crowd. We were glad we did," suggests a Piney Grove visitor.
