Birch Lake Campground & Backcountry Sites

Fishing and paddling opportunities draw campers to Birch Lake Campground & Backcountry Sites, which operates from May through October in the Superior National Forest. The US Forest Service manages this established campground that accommodates RVs up to 66 feet with water hookups available at some sites. Rates range from $21 to $95 per night, with both reservable and first-come, first-served options.

The forested setting provides privacy between sites, with many campers noting how trees screen individual areas from the road. Kara B. found "hiking trails right out of the campsite" and noted the campground stays "quiet except for the nature sounds - frogs, owls, loons at night." Several miles of gravel road lead to the lake access, keeping boat traffic minimal. The well water has an off smell and discolored appearance according to some visitors, so bringing your own drinking water proves wise.

Sites spread out across both forested and open terrain near the lake. Campers can fish for northern pike from shore or launch canoes and kayaks for exploring the water. The campground allows pets and campfires, with pit toilets and hand sanitizer stations available. For those planning extended stays in the region, camping near Ely provides additional options about 10 miles north. Book reservations in advance during peak summer months, as weekend availability becomes limited.

Many campers appreciated the large, private sites and peaceful atmosphere away from highway noise. The lake offers excellent fishing and wildlife viewing opportunities, though some visitors noted concerns about water quality.

Great Place!

We arrived late and set up in the dark, but were pleasantly surprised in the morning. Quiet except for the nature sounds - fronts, owls, loons at night. Hiking trails right out of the campsite.

Quite

Very nice northern Mn. Campground . Semi primative. Stayed 2 nights and kayaked close to shore out of the wind. Caught a couple of Northerns. I think other campsites are better but this was the only one available.

Remote, quiet campground

We showed up around 8 PM on a Friday and was still able to get a spot at this nice, quiet campground. It was a very peaceful spot since the gravel leading To it is quite a few miles off the highway. The lake was gorgeous with little boat traffic as well. Sites were large, private, and spread out. Some sites are reservable while others are FCFS. There were still a few open sites throughout the weekend.

Nice little campground

The sites had good privacy due to the trees, and I managed to set the tent up at the way back of the site, so you couldn't see it from the road. The pit toilet was pretty clean and there were even hand sanitizer bottles outside for use. The well water available had a bit of an off smell and came out a little more yellow/brown than I prefer so I did not use it.
