      Owner very rude and disrespectful

Run down campground with rude disrespectful owner. We were attacked over something that was so trivial...a few hoof prints by our trailer where we we told to park. Horses did not dig or paw. She drove up to us and complained that they tore up her grass, which wasn't true. There was no grass to begin with, it was moss. Our ponied stood quietly tied to trailer as we saddled up and then when we came back from our rife and unsaddled.  We were with them the entire time....it was a short day ride with a friend who was camping there. Woman never asked or told us to picket. Normal function  for horseman is to ride from trailer. I Just couldn't believe it. Told woman we understood and would be leaving and wouldn't be back. She kept running her mouth. I told her to drop it and that again, we would leave and would not be back. Kept running her mouth, and Id had enough and told her to shut up.

      Small sites

The sites were very small at this campground. Our fire pit was so close to our trailer we didn’t dare use it. There is a small playground for kids but not much else to do. They advertise disc golf but there are only 2 baskets on the playground within a few feet of each other. Not an actual disc golf course. There are hiking trails but unfortunately we were not able to use them due to it being hunting season. Won’t be camping here again any time soon.

      White River Campsite #1

      Dispersed camping area

This is the White River special area of the Manistee National Forest. While there are numbered campsites, there are no facilities or amenities. This is more suitable for tents or maybe small campers. Best access seems to be along 160th avenue south of Arthur road. The road seems a bit sketchy but should be okay for most vehicles. We explored the area while camping at nearby Pines Point campground.

    Guide to North Muskegon

The Manistee National Forest offers several equestrian camping options within an hour's drive of North Muskegon, Michigan. Most horse-friendly sites operate seasonally from May through October, with limited amenities during shoulder seasons. Trails range from beginner-friendly loops to more challenging routes through mixed hardwood and pine forests.

    What to do

Horseback riding on forest trails: White River Campsite #1 provides access to dispersed camping areas near bridle paths. "This is the White River special area of the Manistee National Forest. While there are numbered campsites, there are no facilities or amenities. This is more suitable for tents or maybe small campers," notes Kendra H., who recommends accessing the area "along 160th avenue south of Arthur road."

Lake activities for non-riders: Hungerford Lake Campground offers both equestrian facilities and water recreation. "Dispersed camping and camp sites available. There are horse staging areas and hiking trails. The lake is nice, small enough for a kayak/no motor boat," explains Arron P., highlighting the dual appeal for horse owners and water enthusiasts.

Organized equestrian events: Timbers Edge Campground hosts special horse-centered weekends throughout the season. "We stayed here during their Equestrian Weekends several years in a row, great hosts and large lots make this place a nice hidden gem!" reports Becky P., describing the community atmosphere during these events.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Whiskey Creek Campground earns praise for its spacious layout. "Activities, trails, fishing, swimming or just relax! One of our family's favorite spots up north," writes Jason S., noting the campground provides multiple recreation options without feeling crowded.

Staff assistance for new campers: First-time horse campers appreciate guidance at established equestrian sites. "Friendly staff, made us feel comfortable being first timers camping. Very helpful!! Can't wait to come back!" shares Stacy H. about her experience at Whiskey Creek Campground.

Premium site options: Whiskey Creek Resort offers upgraded facilities for those seeking more comfort. "General store, fuel on site small lake, park has a hilly layout. New showers in camping area, meeting area at club house hosts are excellent," notes Jeff F., highlighting amenities not typically found at more rustic horse campgrounds.

    What you should know

Trail conditions vary seasonally: Manistee National Forest trails require different preparation depending on the time of year. "I went in November. Most campers were there on the weekend. Pit toilets, a pond, hot showers but shower room unheated, no dump station, nice size lots. A lot of horses and hunters," explains Sharon S. about Timbers Edge Campground.

Portable corrals required: Most equestrian sites near North Muskegon do not provide permanent horse enclosures. Campers must bring highline systems, portable fencing, or tethering equipment appropriate for their horses.

Mixed recreational use: Some forest areas permit motorized vehicles on designated trails. "Dirtbikes n 4 wheelers flying around causing dust n access noise. Premium Sites might be the way to go though," warns Aaron Y. about shared trail experiences at Timbers Edge Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Water recreation options: Duke Creek Campground provides family activities beyond horseback riding. "We had the BEST time with the kids! Train rides, Pool, Scavenger hunt, trails, bike rides, there just weren't enough hours in the day! We should have reserved an entire week!" recommends Becky P.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Condon Lakes area offers quieter nature experiences. "Got here around 1730 on a Sunday. Have the whole place to myself. Not bad getting into, signal is poor. Lots of wildlife," reports Dexter V. about the Condon Lakes West Semi-Primitive Nonmotorized Area.

Consider cabin alternatives: For families new to horse camping, cabins provide comfort while learning the ropes. "The cabins are clean and nice, the view of the lake is beautiful. My 6 children had a great time here," shares Nora M. about Scalley Lake Park Campground.

    Tips from RVers

Site accessibility for horse trailers: Dispersed camping areas provide more flexibility for larger rigs with horse trailers. "There are dispersed options as well as docked site. It's in a forest, so bring a compass if you plan to do some hiking," advises Vegan T. about White River Campsite #1.

Hookup limitations: Most dedicated equestrian sites have limited or no hookups. "Small sites" can be challenging for RVs with horse trailers, as Clint notes about Duke Creek Campground: "The sites were very small at this campground. Our fire pit was so close to our trailer we didn't dare use it."

Premium vs. standard sites: Horse campers with RVs should consider upgrading to premium sites when available. Josh N. explains at Double JJ Resort: "Campground I found to be tight, and it was hard to know where your site ended and other began. Water and electric ports were shared on one site so other campers were constantly on our site hooking up and adjusting."
