    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern — Waterloo Recreation Area

    A Wonderful Winter Getaway

We stayed in the Southfork Rustic Cabin at the end of Feb and it was lovely much needed get away. The cabin was semi modern (solar lighting) but only a wood stove for heat. Small kitchen unit with table for eating. You had to hike in about a quarter mile to get there, and it sleeps four people with two bunk beds. There is an outside vault toilet behind the cabin. Lots of trails connecting the cabin to the rest of the park. Cheap too! Only $68 per night.

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

    Twin Mills Camping Resort

    Beautiful Wooded Campground

Twin Mills is a really beautiful and quiet RV Campground, with tall trees in Northern Indiana. We frequent this location when getting RV Repairs and visiting Elkhart, the birth place of most RVs.

There are cabins and tent sites and a large lake access point with a beach area. The playgrounds seemed to be in good shape and the dumpsters were centrally located.

The park has a gate entrance for security.

There is a large pool area and basketball court.

There are several sections in the park, some more wooded and narrow sites, some are more spread out.

Cellular: T-Mobile had good signal strength and bandwidth, AT&T was not as good but still doable.

Most of the sites are full hook up, some have 30amp and some have 50amp.

Amenities: Pool Clubhouse Basketball Volleyball Picnic tables Fire rings Trash Playground Lake access Beach area Dock Cabins Tent sites

    Lake Hudson Recreation Area

Beautiful Nature, Dark Sky Rustic Camping

Lake Hudson is a dark sky preserve full of trees, nature and a beautiful lake. The camping sites come with an electric plug in, a nice fire ring and a picnic table. They are cute sites. Most are not by the lake. There is a dumpster. The facilities are rustic. The facilities are port a potty type with wooden walls and cement floor. No showers. A hand pump well for water. The swimming part of the lake requires a drive. The Lake is beautiful with a sand beach, no wake boating and grills. However it is rustic so there is goose poo. The woods are beautiful. There is hunting. We had heard that some people partied there but the night we were there it was quiet and people were respectful. We had a beautiful fire and dutch oven dinner. We saw one cute racoon who ran away when I reacted. We were worried about mosquitos but we only saw one.

    Cold Brook County Park

    Nice little county park!

29 campsites pretty close together with old growth trees interspersed around the campground. Fishing pier and boating, playground area, and beach. No longer has primitive camping. Some hiking trails...short. is next to a busy road, so traffic all night. Staff was great! Showers and bathrooms cleaned multiple times a day. Pet friendly. Would stay here again!

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Nice park for Northwest Ohio

We rented a yurt as a local weekend escape. Our kids loved the yurt. It was nice with a little mini fridge and 4 double beds. Campground showers and bathrooms are clean. It is one of the only state parks in northwest Ohio, a beautiful little spot nestled in farmland of Ohio. The lake is nice for swimming and there are bike rentals which was fun as well. We did not use it, but there is a dog beach as well. Sites are crowed and close together.

Guide to Litchfield

Cabins near Litchfield, Michigan offer a range of options for visitors seeking shelter in this central southern Michigan region. Located in Hillsdale County at an elevation of 1,100 feet, Litchfield experiences typical Midwest continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Winter cabin rentals require advance planning as several facilities close from late October through April.

What to do

Fishing access: Lake Hudson Recreation Area provides excellent fishing opportunities from cabin sites. "Swimming, boating, kayaking, fishing, sand beaches & more on a good size lake with tons of inlets & curvy shorelines," notes one visitor. The recreation area maintains a boat launch area for easy water access.

Stargazing opportunities: Lake Hudson is designated as a dark sky preserve, making it ideal for night sky viewing from cabin porches. "The best part of this campground is the stars at night! This is a dark sky preserve campground and the stars are the show," reports a camper who stayed during the Perseid meteor shower.

Mountain biking: Cabin accommodations at Fort Custer Recreation Area provide direct access to extensive trail systems. "We loved our site as it's close to the trails for riding," shares one mountain biker. The recreation area maintains separate trails for hikers, horses, and mountain bikes.

What campers like

Private cabin settings: Waffle Farm Campground offers waterfront cabin sites with natural buffers. "We had a nice site on the lake but everywhere you look are permanent campers," notes a visitor, indicating the established nature of many sites.

Family-focused amenities: Gateway Park Campground cabins provide access to numerous recreational facilities. "They have a lot for the kids here: Pool 3ft-5ft, Air pillow, Large playground (very clean), Half basketball court, Sand Volleyball net, Rec room, Crafts on weekends, Corn hole boards, Horse shoe pits," details one family who stayed at the campground.

Winter cabin options: Some Litchfield-area cabins remain open year-round, including those at Fort Custer Recreation Area. "We've been here 2x before (once in a cabin and once in tents) and this has now officially become a favorite," mentions a repeat visitor who appreciates the all-season availability.

What you should know

Varying electricity situations: Many cabins near Litchfield have limited electrical capacity. At Harbor Cove RV Resort, one camper noted electrical issues: "We struggled to stay for 1 night as we had to keep hitting the Circuit Breaker every 5-10 minutes."

Water access considerations: Cabin sites have different water access arrangements. At Lake Hudson, "The only place to get water is a hand pump right when you enter the campground," explains a visitor. This requires planning for water transportation to your cabin.

Reservation requirements: Most cabin sites fill quickly, especially waterfront locations. "There are only a few waterfront sites and they are very hard to get," reports a Lake Hudson visitor. Bookings should be made 3-6 months in advance for summer weekends.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Gateway Park Campground cabin rentals include access to multiple play areas. A visitor notes the playground is "very clean" and the campground offers "crafts on weekends" for younger guests.

Beach swimming: Memorial Park cabins provide access to maintained swimming areas. "There is a nice clean beach area, little bit pebbly, but always freshly raked and cleaned every morning," shares a return visitor who appreciates the daily maintenance.

Site selection strategy: Choose cabins away from high-traffic areas for quieter family experiences. "The sites are all separated from the next by young forest, so it lends to a very private and secluded atmosphere," notes a Lake Hudson camper who found the spacing ideal for families seeking quiet.

Tips from RVers

Electrical hookup locations: Several cabin areas have electrical connections positioned in non-standard locations. At Lake Hudson, a visitor advises: "Extension or long electrical cords may be needed, as boxes are at back end and halfway to next site over."

Site leveling: Most cabin sites and RV pads near Litchfield require minimal leveling. "The sites are all paved with plenty of space and with grass and shade," reports a Gateway Park visitor, indicating the well-maintained nature of the camping surfaces.

Dump station availability: Not all cabin camping areas have on-site dump stations. A Lake Hudson visitor reports: "They don't sell firewood there but a short drive gets you deal from the local farmer, the campground has no dump station so we had to drive to the next State campground, about a 30 minute drive, to dump the tanks."
