Sugarloaf Campground — Waterloo Recreation Area

      A Wonderful Winter Getaway

We stayed in the Southfork Rustic Cabin at the end of Feb and it was lovely much needed get away. The cabin was semi modern (solar lighting) but only a wood stove for heat. Small kitchen unit with table for eating. You had to hike in about a quarter mile to get there, and it sleeps four people with two bunk beds. There is an outside vault toilet behind the cabin. Lots of trails connecting the cabin to the rest of the park. Cheap too! Only $68 per night.

      Harrison Lake State Park Campground

      Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

      Lake Hudson Recreation Area

Beautiful Nature, Dark Sky Rustic Camping

Lake Hudson is a dark sky preserve full of trees, nature and a beautiful lake. The camping sites come with an electric plug in, a nice fire ring and a picnic table. They are cute sites. Most are not by the lake. There is a dumpster. The facilities are rustic. The facilities are port a potty type with wooden walls and cement floor. No showers. A hand pump well for water. The swimming part of the lake requires a drive. The Lake is beautiful with a sand beach, no wake boating and grills. However it is rustic so there is goose poo. The woods are beautiful. There is hunting. We had heard that some people partied there but the night we were there it was quiet and people were respectful. We had a beautiful fire and dutch oven dinner. We saw one cute racoon who ran away when I reacted. We were worried about mosquitos but we only saw one.

      Cold Brook County Park

      Nice little county park!

29 campsites pretty close together with old growth trees interspersed around the campground. Fishing pier and boating, playground area, and beach. No longer has primitive camping. Some hiking trails...short. is next to a busy road, so traffic all night. Staff was great! Showers and bathrooms cleaned multiple times a day. Pet friendly. Would stay here again!

      Harrison Lake State Park Campground

      Nice park for Northwest Ohio

We rented a yurt as a local weekend escape. Our kids loved the yurt. It was nice with a little mini fridge and 4 double beds. Campground showers and bathrooms are clean. It is one of the only state parks in northwest Ohio, a beautiful little spot nestled in farmland of Ohio. The lake is nice for swimming and there are bike rentals which was fun as well. We did not use it, but there is a dog beach as well. Sites are crowed and close together.

Sugarloaf Campground — Waterloo Recreation Area

      Great Family Campground

This is a nice place to camp if you dont mind the bigger parks. There is electrical on each site and is mostly a place for campers and RVs. There are fire pits and picnic tables at each site. It is usually easy to get multiple sites next to each other with reservations.

There is a decent sandy beach here with a playground and volleyball net. Also in the park are some small dirt trails for hiking and biking. There are enough loops here to go for walks as well.

Most of the sites are in the sun, but there are a few sites with more shade and tree cover.

      W. J. Hayes State Park Campground

Great state park in the Irish Hills

Hayes State Park is a great little spot in the Irish Hills. It rained the whole time we were there (boo!) but we tried to make the best of it. Our site was the perfect spot for two tents and a hammock, and I loved the fire pit and table being next to the driveway. There’s electric at every site, and a paved driveway for RVs. One thing is that the sites in the east loop, while a little more spaced out than the west loop, are still real close together. If there had been someone in the spot to our left, it would’ve felt really cramped. The ranger office was nice, clean, and had lots of information ready! Firewood and ice are available there as well for reasonable prices. The bathroom building was right in the center of our loop, and had warm showers that were great after a day of cold mist. They aren’t the cleanest, but with how many people were there it was well kept and stocked. This is obviously a campground geared towards families, with tons to do from the beach, to volleyball courts and horseshoes. The main attraction is of course Wamplers Lake, and you can rent kayaks, pedal boats and canoes to go explore around the lake. Overall, this is a great campsite if you are a family, or attending an event at MIS right down the road. If you enjoy more secluded campsites, this isn’t the spot for you.

    Guide to Concord

Cabin rentals near Concord, Michigan offer access to the region's inland lakes and wooded areas throughout Jackson County. The area features rolling terrain with elevations averaging 1,000 feet above sea level and seasonal temperature ranges from winter lows around 15°F to summer highs near 85°F. Most cabins function as home bases for exploring the interconnected waterways and trail systems found within a 30-mile radius.

    What to do

Fishing on multiple lakes: At Rockeys Campground, visitors access a chain of five interconnected lakes with various fishing spots. "Rockey's is on a chain of 5 lakes and has some of the best fishing!" notes reviewer Keely B.

Hiking through natural areas: Waterloo Recreation Area offers extensive trail systems with varied difficulty levels. "There are trail, beaches, boats, horses... so many things to do," says reviewer Becky N., highlighting the multi-use options for cabin visitors.

Mountain biking on designated trails: Fort Custer Recreation Area maintains specific mountain bike paths separate from hiking trails. A reviewer mentioned, "We camped and rode at Fort Custer. We've been here 2x before (once in a cabin and once in tents) and this has now officially become a favorite."

    What campers like

Cabin locations near water: At W. J. Hayes State Park Campground, cabin users appreciate the dual-lake access. "It has access to Wamplers Lake and there are several other lakes near by. The area is quiet and clean," explains Annie G.

Clean facilities: Gateway Park Campground maintains high cleanliness standards that frequent visitors appreciate. "Very clean campground with friendly staff. Lake across the road is clean and nicely kept," notes Lisa D., referencing both the cabins and shared areas.

Recreational amenities: Multiple rental cabins near Concord include access to organized activities. "They have a lot for the kids here: Pool 3ft-5ft, Air pillow, Large playground (very clean), Half basketball court, Sand Volleyball net, Rec room, Crafts on weekends," describes Melissa M. about Gateway Park.

    What you should know

Seasonal operations: Many cabin facilities close during winter months, with operating seasons typically running April through October. "The campground is great, but the beach area is very mucky and dirty. Seaweed just flats around and gets tangled around your legs and arms all the time," warns Martin W. about summer swimming conditions at Waterloo Recreation Area.

Site spacing considerations: Cabin proximity varies significantly between locations. "Sites are small and mostly dirt. Saturday night was packed with partying campers," reports Beth H. about W.J. Hayes State Park, suggesting midweek bookings for quieter stays.

Pet policies: Pokagon State Park Campground permits pets at cabin sites but with strict leash requirements. "The 6-foot leash rules are very clearly stated. There are many campers whose dogs remain the exception and don't abide by the rules," warns Gary G. about enforcement challenges.

    Tips for camping with families

Book cabins with playgrounds: Gateway Park Campground offers multiple play areas near cabin sites. "They have a very nice Inn for the less 'natural' crowd," mentions Shelly S., indicating options for families seeking different comfort levels.

Consider water quality for swimming: Some lakes offer better swimming conditions than others. "The lake is clean enough to swim in," notes Janine P. about Waterloo Recreation Area, though conditions vary seasonally.

Look for organized activities: Scheduled programs enhance cabin stays for children. "The park workers walk around and tell you about the activities they have that day," explains Shelly about Waterloo Portage Lake, helping families plan daily activities from their cabins.

    Tips from RVers

Cabin proximity to dump stations: For campers combining cabin and RV use, note facility locations. "Since there are no water or sewer hook ups, lines at the dump/fill station can get long," warns Bob B. about Fort Custer Recreation Area.

Electric-only considerations: Most cabins near Concord provide electricity but limited other hookups. "Sites have electrical service only. Must use the dump station," explains VB S. about facilities at W.J. Hayes State Park.

Seasonal road conditions: Access roads to cabin areas may have seasonal limitations. "We camped at the track but used the Lake here. I also noticed campers from the race using the dump station here at this park!" notes Alex H., referencing nearby Michigan International Speedway events that affect cabin availability.
