Best Cabin Camping near Bergland, MI

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Cabins at Lake Gogebic State Park Campground feature lakeside locations with basic amenities including electricity, picnic tables, and fire rings. Most cabins are equipped with standard beds, though specific furnishing levels vary by location. Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park offers rustic outpost cabins at Little Presque Isle and Presque Isle locations, providing more remote experiences with limited amenities. Bond Falls Campground cabins provide another option for visitors exploring the area's natural attractions. "Roomy wooded sites right on Lake Gogebic which is the Upper Peninsula's largest inland lake. 2 fairly clean bathroom and shower areas, volleyball net, basketball hoop, beach/swim area," notes one visitor who appreciated the facilities.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Stargazers U.P. Campground provides cabin rentals with more amenities than state park options, including electric hookups, drinking water, and trash service. Most cabins require advance reservations, particularly during summer months when visitation peaks. Pet policies vary by location - Lake Gogebic State Park and Bond Falls Campground are pet-friendly, though leash regulations are strictly enforced. According to a visitor, "The 'DNR Officer' that oversees the grounds is a zealot on dog leashes," indicating the importance of following pet rules at state park facilities.

Most cabins include basic furnishings but require visitors to bring their own bedding, pillows, towels, and cooking supplies. Campground stores at some locations sell firewood and ice, though selection is limited. Lake Gogebic State Park offers ice for $2 per bag and firewood bundles available for purchase. Visitors planning extended stays should bring groceries and supplies as rural locations have limited shopping options. During colder months, warm clothing and additional blankets are recommended as temperatures can drop significantly, especially at lakeside cabins. "The weather was cool for 2/3 nights we were there so would recommend some warmer clothes and blankets," advised one camper.

Presque Isle - Porcupine Mountains State Park

Gorgeous views and perfect rustic space

Great rustic campground on the far west side of the state park. One loop is generator free which was wonderful. Easy to get other places in the park. Water pump and vault toilets. Sites are large and level with grass or packed sand and have a picnic table and fire ring. Dumpsters available for trash.

Presque Isle - Porcupine Mountains State Park

    Stunning landscapes

We camped at Presque Isle in the Porkies for a long weekend in October. The color change was amazing! This campground is rustic with only vault toilets and no hookups. There is a section that allows generators during certain hours of the day, a non-generator area and a few walk-in sites. There are a few sites which are along the cliff side looking down to Lake Superior, we were lucky enough to reserve one of those, site 2. It was a very large site, equipped with the standard picnic table and fire ring. Many of the sites back up to the woods, which were smaller and a little soggy while we were there. This campground is one of two in the park, Union Bay is the other more modern campground located right on the lake. The sites there are much smaller and crowded. I prefer the more remote Presque Isle campground by far. Less amenities but far less people. The hiking throughout this park is unparalleled in its beauty. The campground is close to the Presque Isle river trail which is waterfall after waterfall. The park has a ski lift we rode to check out the views from the top of the mountain, as well as an 18 hole disc course. It’s the hiking and rugged beauty of the area that is the main attraction, especially catching the fall colors surrounding Lake Superior.

Presque Isle - Porcupine Mountains State Park

Great Campground for exploring, and for those who love waterfalls.

If you're a person who loves waterfalls, then I recommend you don’t miss this campground.  Presque Isle Campground is located at the southern edge of the Porcupine Mountains State Park in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.  This campground has bluff overlooking Lake Superior, there is a walkway and stairs that take you down the bluff to the shore.  Walking distance from the campground is the Presque River you can hike along and see all the beautiful waterfalls this river has to offer.  This is a Rustic campground that has vault toilets, and hand pump drinking water. The campground, restrooms and surrounding area’s were kept very clean. There are 50 campsites that are equipped for tents, trailers, and RV’s.  Each site has a fire pit, and picnic table.  There is no electrical hook up, and part of the campground is generator free.  Six of the sites are walk in sites, there are parking spots for these sites, you park and walk in a little ways to your site.  I recommend a site that is located on the outer sides of the campground loop.  They are larger sites and more privacy from your neighbors.  Inner loop sites are closer together and open.  Be prepared for mosquitoes and blackflies.  Blackflies bite, and bug spray does not affect them.  I found keeping a hand towel or fly swatter moving around me helped keep them away.  They are more active when it is humid, and down by the water.  These flies seem to be common up here along the shore.

There are many things to do around the campground close to your site and others are a little bit of a drive from your site in the Porcupine Mountains State Park.  If you like to stay close to your camp, you can hang out on the beach, hike along the Presque Isle River and discover the Manabezho Falls, Manido Falls, and the Nawadaha Falls.  Also the Lake Superior Trail and North Country Trail are right by the campground.  These trails will connect you with other trails in the Porcupine Mountains.  The Porcupine Mountains have lot’s to offer anyone stopping to visit.  We took and day and seen The Lake of the Clouds, and Summit Peak.  They both are gorgeous areas to explore.

    Hi-Pines Campground

Wide open space great if you have kids!

This campground is wide and very open. We arrived on a Sunday and the weekend crowd had cleared out, so nice and quiet. One thing is— do not plan on doing laundry on a Monday. The personnel use all the machines to wash linens and towels from the cabins after folks check out. One dryer did not heat very well. The entry to the laundry is a step up and I stubbed my toe because the threshold was not secured.

Union Bay Campground — Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

Beautiful (but buggy) camping right on Lake Superior

General: The only developed campground in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, there are 100 sites on three rows. If you reserve far enough in advance, you can snag a lakefront site. There are also two yurts and an ADA-accessible tiny house that can be used during the winter months as well.

Site Quality: What you gain in lake views, you will sacrifice in privacy between the lakefront sites (but still worth it IMO). The first couple of sites in the first (top) row are wooded and have some privacy between them. The sites between rows one and two back up to each other and are the least private while the sites between rows two and three have some trees to separate them. Sites are on grass. A picnic table and fire ring complete each site.

Bathhouse: Decently clean as were the showers. There was also a single washer and dryer, but the dryer was out of order when we were there.

Activities/Amenities: Hiking! Although there are not many trails leading from this campground, you can drive to many other trailheads. The East and West trails bordering the Presque Isle River are worth the drive to get there, as was the lookout and Escarpment Trail by Lake of the Clouds. There was also a nice, modern playground, a little free library, and a hut with a plethora of games and toys.

Although this campground was full, the staff handled it well (bathrooms were well stocked). Note you need a Michigan pass (daily or annual) to camp here.

Union Bay Campground — Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

Mountains in Michigan? And, on the shores of Lake Superior? Amazing!

Union Bay is the only “modern” campground in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness, offering around 100 fully-reservable, electric sites with access to a modern bathroom and shower house. The lakeside sites, as you can imagine, are the most popular and spacious, and most often booked 6 months in advance.  If you come after leaf season, you can have the place to yourself.  However, the winds off the lake can be powerful and the numerous campsites on the upper level offer a bit more protection, if somewhat more cramped.

The boat launch is right next to the campground, if you plan to get out onto the big lake. The outdoor adventure opportunities in the park are endless, from hiking, biking, and paddling in the spring through the fall to skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.   But, bring your muck boots if you come in the fall or spring, as the trails and campground is wet and full of mud.

As a designated wilderness, motorized recreation is not allowed within the park, so your walk in the woods remains undisturbed. Backpacking is very popular here and backcountry camping sites are numerous, and reservable (get your permit at the Visitor’s Center). The park offers cabins and yurts, some of which are only accessible by trail which and heated by a wood stove making a winter adventure more attractive. There is also a downhill skiing area located within 3 miles of the Visitors Center.

The bathrooms at Union Bay are modern and comfortable with individual unisex shower units accessible via an outside door. The laundry room has 1 washing machine and 2 dryers(be sure to run the dryer on high). Water is available at several spigots throughout the campground, and the sewer dump station is right on the way out of the campsite to take care of that business when you leave.

Be sure to drive or hike up to the Lake of the Clouds overlook and trail network. The glacially carved escarpment offers a priceless view of what the locals call “the Porkies” and makes the long drive to get here worth it.

The closest town of significance to Union Bay is Ontonagon, 18 miles away, so plan ahead with supplies. Just outside the campground is a small, privately run, campstore where you can get ice cream, ice and a few other food items, and lots of tourist trinkets – just look for the oversized black bear.

    Bond Falls Campground

    Awesome lake amazing waterfall

Best free campground. Fire ring picnic table. Beautiful lake full of fish. Amazing waterfall. Clean campground with toilet and hand pump for water. No dump station. West side is near the falls.

Guide to Bergland

Cabin camping near Bergland, Michigan centers around the Lake Gogebic region, which sits at an elevation of approximately 1,300 feet in Michigan's western Upper Peninsula. Winter temperatures often drop below 0°F with over 200 inches of annual snowfall, while summer days typically range from 65-80°F. The region's cabins provide shelter from these variable conditions, with most sites positioned within forested areas dominated by pine, spruce, and hardwood trees.

What to do

Fishing at Bond Falls Campground: The lake at Bond Falls is stocked with brook trout and offers excellent fishing opportunities. "The lakes are stocked with brook trout and the fishing is amazing," notes a camper who appreciated the access to quality fishing spots. Bond Falls Campground provides convenient water access for anglers.

Waterfall exploration at Little Presque Isle: A trailhead at the beginning of the campground leads to several impressive waterfalls. "There is a trailhead right at the beginning of the campground that is short and easy with a number of amazing waterfalls along the way," explains one visitor to Little Presque Isle Rustic Outpost Camp.

Visit nearby Porcupine Mountains: The "Porkies" offer extensive trail networks within 30 minutes of Lake Gogebic. "The Porcupine Mtns were a 30 minute drive north and we had a great time there," shares a camper who used Lake Gogebic as a base camp for exploring this wilderness area.

What campers like

Waterfront cabin sites: Many visitors prefer the waterfront cabin locations that offer direct lake access. "We had a site in the shade, directly on the lake," mentions a visitor who enjoyed their lakeside accommodations at Lake Gogebic State Park Campground.

Peace and privacy at rustic outposts: The remote outpost cabins provide a secluded experience. "We spent a weekend back country camping in the Porcupine Mountains... LS #6 = AMAZING view and it sits off the trail a bit!! It's about a 4 mile hike into the site," shares a camper who appreciated the isolation of these more remote Porcupine Mountains cabins.

Well-maintained facilities: Despite the rustic settings, most cabins have basic necessities and clean surrounding areas. "The park was clean and very well maintained, bathrooms were very clean," notes a Lake Gogebic State Park visitor who appreciated the upkeep of facilities near the cabins.

What you should know

Weather preparation: Temperature fluctuations can be significant, requiring preparation for various conditions. "Originally we reserved a space by the lake. But the people at the next site were taking up our space. So we moved to another. Which was fine with us as we were tent camping and it was pretty cold (40 degree range) and windy and being off the lake seemed better," explains a camper who found the lakeside cabins to be windier and colder.

Bug activity varies by season: Mosquitoes and biting flies can be intense, particularly in early summer. "We stayed on the east side and found a spot along the lake. Mosquitoes and flies were so bad that our dogs faces were getting bloody and bug spray and a fire did nothing for us," cautions a Bond Falls visitor who struggled with insects.

Limited shopping options: Most cabin areas have minimal nearby amenities. "Should you need to purchase any other supplies, I would recommend doing so beforehand, as there are not a lot of options nearby," advises a visitor who recognized the importance of bringing supplies.

Tips for camping with families

Beach access for children: Several cabin locations offer designated swimming areas for families. "The beach area was nice with a nice big sandy beach for the kids," shares a visitor who found the swimming area at Lake Gogebic State Park ideal for family activities.

Cabin booking timeline: Reserve cabins well in advance for family trips, especially during summer. "The campsites were full at the Porkies, so this was a very convenient campground to stay at, but not a destination location on its own," explains one visitor, highlighting the need for advanced planning.

Recreational options for different ages: Some cabin areas provide additional activities beyond the natural attractions. "There is a nice picnic area and a boat ramp. This is a solid park for enjoying the lake," notes a Lake Gogebic visitor who found multiple options for family entertainment.

Tips from RVers

Utility connections at upgraded sites: RV-friendly cabins often have better electric service. "Stargazers U.P. Campground provides cabin rentals with more amenities than state park options, including electric hookups, drinking water, and trash service," notes a visitor to Stargazers U.P. Campground.

Site leveling considerations: Many cabin areas have uneven terrain that affects RV placement. "Most sites are large with trees but not many are very level," observes a camper who found site selection challenging for larger vehicles.

Generator policies: Rules about generator use vary significantly between locations. "There is a section that allows generators during certain hours of the day, a non-generator area and a few walk-in sites," explains a visitor to Presque Isle, highlighting the importance of checking noise regulations at each cabin location.
