A hike that changed my life

My trip to Isle Royale was my first backpacking trip ever. My partner and I took the Queen IV ferry into Rock Harbor and then hike the 7 or something miles to Lane Cove. It was a tough hike, but well worth it. We saw a moose ahead of us on our way to the campsite, which I imagine would be the same feeling that one would have when running into a majestic unicorn.

We arrived shortly before the golden hour and the campground was gorgeous and perfect for watching the sunset and listening to the looms sing their songs. As we were falling asleep we heard a pack of wolves howling in the distance. I hope to one day experience that again. Lane Cove is still my favorite campground I’ve ever stayed at. Every site there feels special. I can’t wait to hike back and show this campground to loved ones. I definitely recommend staying here at least two nights.

SiteThird or fourth from the left as you walk into the campground. I believe there are only five or six sites. Each has enough room for 2-3 tents.

Quiet Scenic Campground

One of the most scenic campgrounds on Isle Royale. Difficult hike downhill to the cove, but worth it. Only a handful of campsites so arrive early if possible. super quiet, and lots of beavers around!

Wonderful, secluded sites on Lake Superior

Of the three places I pitched my tent on Isle Royale, Lane Cove was my favorite. It is about four miles one way to get here, and because it's not part of any loop there are usually fewer people down here. You have lovely views of Lake Superior. The campground is quite large and tent sites are all pretty far from one another. Some tent sites are flatter than others. Water comes from Lake Superior, and I believe most if not all tent sites have direct access to the lake. We heard a family of moose tromp through the forest in the night, and saw them browsing on our hike back to the ferry the next morning. The view of the sunset from our camp was gorgeous, and I would highly recommend spending a night at Lane Cove.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Lane Cove Campground on Isle Royale?

Lane Cove Campground is accessible by hiking approximately 7 miles from Rock Harbor on Isle Royale National Park. The trail includes a challenging downhill section to reach the cove. Since Isle Royale is an island, you'll first need to take the Queen IV ferry (or another approved transportation) to Rock Harbor, then hike to the campground. Lane Cove is not part of any loop trail, which helps keep visitor numbers lower than other areas of the park. Plan for a full day of hiking to reach this remote and scenic location.

Do I need a permit to stay at Lane Cove Campground on Isle Royale?

Yes, you need a permit to stay at Lane Cove Campground. Isle Royale National Park requires permits for all overnight stays on the island. You can obtain permits through the National Park Service, either in advance or upon arrival at Rock Harbor (subject to availability). Since Lane Cove has only a handful of campsites, it's advisable to secure your permit as early as possible, especially during peak season. Check the NPS website or contact the park directly for current permit procedures and fees.

What amenities are available at Lane Cove Campground?

Lane Cove Campground offers a primitive backcountry camping experience with minimal amenities. The campground features several well-spaced tent sites with beautiful views of Lake Superior. No potable water is available, so you'll need to filter water from the lake or bring your own. The site includes basic pit toilets but no showers or electrical hookups. There are no stores or services nearby, so pack in everything you'll need. What Lane Cove lacks in facilities, it makes up for with scenic beauty, privacy, and a true wilderness experience.

What wildlife might I encounter at Lane Cove on Isle Royale?

Lane Cove offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Visitors commonly spot beavers in the area, and moose sightings occur along the trail and near the campground. Isle Royale is also home to wolves, though they're more elusive. The island's ecosystem supports numerous bird species, small mammals, and aquatic life in Lake Superior. The relatively quiet and less-trafficked nature of Lane Cove increases your chances of wildlife encounters. Remember to maintain appropriate distance from all wildlife and properly store food to avoid attracting animals to your campsite.
