Quiet and spacious

Only a few shelters and we got the last one on Tuesday afternoon we arrived.

The shelters are similar to the other ones on the island.

There are outhouses but no potable water nor cell reception.

There were a few people who docked their fishing boat and ate here.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit Chippewa Harbor Campground?

The best time to visit Chippewa Harbor Campground is during the main season of Isle Royale National Park, which typically runs from late spring through early fall (approximately mid-May to late September). Summer months (June through August) offer the most pleasant weather conditions with warmer temperatures. Early fall provides beautiful foliage with fewer visitors. Be aware that shelters can fill up quickly, especially on weekdays, so arriving early in the day improves your chances of securing accommodation. Always check with the National Park Service for current seasonal opening dates, as Isle Royale is closed to visitors during winter months due to harsh Lake Superior conditions.

How do I get to Chippewa Harbor Campground on Isle Royale?

Chippewa Harbor Campground on Isle Royale National Park is accessible primarily by water transportation. You can reach the campground by taking a ferry service to Isle Royale and then either hiking to Chippewa Harbor or taking a water taxi directly to the harbor. The campground is also accessible by private boat, as it has a dock where fishing boats and other vessels can tie up. Since Isle Royale is an isolated island in Lake Superior, all visitors must plan their transportation in advance through authorized ferry services or seaplane operators that service the island. Check with the National Park Service for current transportation schedules to the island.

What amenities and facilities are available at Chippewa Harbor Campground?

Chippewa Harbor Campground offers basic backcountry amenities. The site features a limited number of three-sided shelters available on a first-come, first-served basis. Outhouses are provided for visitors, but there is no potable water available at the campground, so all water must be filtered or treated from Lake Superior or nearby sources. The campground includes a dock where boats can tie up temporarily. There is no cell phone reception at the site. As with all Isle Royale campgrounds, visitors must pack out all trash and follow Leave No Trace principles. Prepare to be self-sufficient with all necessary supplies when staying at this remote location.

What hiking trails connect to Chippewa Harbor on Isle Royale?

Chippewa Harbor connects to Isle Royale's extensive trail network. The Greenstone Ridge Trail, the island's main artery, can be accessed from Chippewa Harbor. The Minong Ridge Trail and Lake Richie Trail also connect with routes leading to Chippewa Harbor. Hikers can traverse between Chippewa Harbor and McCargoe Cove, Moskey Basin, Daisy Farm, or Three Mile campgrounds via connecting trails. These paths vary in difficulty, offering everything from moderate day hikes to challenging multi-day backpacking routes. Trail conditions can be rugged with roots, rocks, and occasional muddy sections, so proper hiking footwear is essential. Check current trail conditions with park rangers before setting out.
