      Clear Springs Recreation Area

A great little campground for RVs or tents

Clear Springs Recreation Area, located in the Homochitto National Forest near Roxie, Ms, is probably one of my favorite campgrounds within 3 hours from New Orleans. It's located in a beautiful section of the forest, complete with rolling hills and a lake.

The primitive tent only sites are located about half a mile up the road from the main campground, providing a substantial distance between you and the RVs. The dirt road to the tent only sites is lined with individual camp sites until you reach the back area. The back has a few small hilltops that have about 4 sites per hill. Each hill is about 50 yards from each other, again, providing needed space between you and other campers. All of the sites have fire pits with fold down cast iron grills. The ground was level enough for tents, and there's a good amount of trees for hammock camping.

The RV spots are located near the lake(pond), and have picnic tables and the fire pit. Some of the RV sites are more open air and without much privacy, yet some are nestled amongst the trees on the outer perimeter.

Adjacent to the RV sites are the restrooms, equipped with showers. On a very cold and frozen winter morning, I had decided to visit the facilities. To my great surprise, when I opened the door, I was hit with blast of warm air! So you can rest easy knowing that the restrooms are heated. There is a large pavilion that is open to air on three sides. the open sides have a railing with bench seats. There are also picnic tables located within. Most interesting was the oversized stone fireplace. It looks most welcoming, although I had no chance to use it.next to the pavilion is an open picnic area with charcoal grills and more tables. All of these picnic areas overlook the pond.

I understand that there is 17 miles of hiking trails surrounding the area. It looks like a large circuit with shorter trails interconnecting by the map.

I haven't experienced this campground outside of dead winter. I enjoyed the subfreezing temps next to a hot fire. I have been four times in the last couple of years, twice solo and twice with guests. I very much love this campground.

      So peaceful

Don’t let the condition of the road or the buildings scare you away from this state park. These people have had to clean up after 2 hurricanes this year. All sites in campground B are level concrete, water and electric. State park grills, picnic tables and sunken fire pits all for just 20.00 per night. 20 minutes from downtown Natchez. Great spot.

      Solid park

My husband and I tent camped in Natchez state park February 2019. We were the only people in the park best we could tell. The bathrooms were great (always important to me),very clean, hot running water, all the essentials. The campsite was nice, no firepit, but we were able to make a fire. It was rainy when we were there, so we spent time outside the park. There are almost no hiking trails in the park, there is a nice lake, but no rental ability that we could find. They do allow hunting in the park, so you must be careful.

      Clear Springs Recreation Area

      Nice family campground

$20, $13 with fed pass. 22 sites. Electric & water hookups. Dump station. Two campground loops - B: Sites 1-12, & A: Sites 13-22. Loop A is prettier that Loop B, but Loop B has more level sites which may be more suitable for larger campers. Camped at site 7 in a camper van. Large site backed against the woods with access to a hiking trail. Not much privacy between sites. Nice family campground. Sites have table, lantern post & fire ring. Picnic Area also in this rec area. Beautiful setting by the lake. Restroom/shower house needs some work. Mens shower stalls have standing water in them - possible drainage issue. Women's toilet stalls also have a similar issue due to a leaky toilet. Bugs were not too bad here in April. No AT&T & T-Mobile service at our campsite, but picked up a weak signal by the lake.

      Clear Springs Recreation Area

      Great camping location

Spent the weekend camping at one of the improved sites with water on site. Site had picnic table, fire pit, and plenty of room for tents and your camp set-up. Our site had a great view of the creek and was a little more tucked away but right by the bathrooms. Trails are throughout the area, couple of fishing spots, lots of picnic areas with grills and a playground. The place was not very crowded and the US Forest Service ranger (Virginia) was very kind and helpful. We hiked some of Richardson Creek Trail, but decided to turn around because it was overgrown at points and we found ticks on our dog. Otherwise, it was a beautiful walk through the woods. Several large banana spiders set up along the way so keep an eye out! Also, the county is supposed to be under a fire burn until the end of October.

      Quiet and relaxing

We stayed in a cabin, they were decently equipped kitchen wise, but be sure to bring your own dish soap, paper towels, etc. The back porches are screened in, and as close to simplistic as you will get staying in a cabin. You can fish around the lake, but I feel it would be better to have a boat to get to the better areas for fishing. Overall, a nice quiet retreat.

Natchez State Park - Nice, Quiet, Tucked Away

Enjoyed my stay for 3 nights. the campgrounds are tucked back in the wooded areas. You drive in from main highway and feel like you’re in a tunnel of trees; temperature drops 5-10 degrees. I was in Campground “B”; nice area with some sites on the lake. Be careful selecting your site, some are uneven and the pad sets above ground level. Sites all have a grill and fire pit. Bathhouse was clean with a washer/dryer for $1.75. Men’s had 2 showers booths. Water pressure at my site was 40 psi no issues. Park is easy access to Natchez and surrounding historical sites.

Great get away....but beware of detour to entrance

My husband and I spent Easter weekend here from Thursday, April 2 to Tuesday, April 6th. It was a beautiful and quiet campground.

There are two camper camping areas - A and B - and a primitive area as wells as cabins. We were in B area which seems more kept than than the A area. In the B area, there was a bathhouse with washer and dryer that worked VERY well. The bathhouse is dated but clean and warm. Although the gaps between the shower stalls leave little privacy in my opinion.

Several of the sites in B face the lake and nature trails which are beautiful. There does seem to be some updating and maintenance needed but overall was a great stay.

We had our Harley and rode the trace and toured the area. It is a city full of history and beautiful sights to see. If you like this kind of thing, check out Rev’s Country Tours.

Currently, the main entrance to the park is under construction, so we were detoured about 7 miles around very bumpy backroads to an alternate entrance. We enjoyed our stay but won’t visit again until the roads are fixed. Also, there are lots of downed trees, limbs, and branches in the area due to the ice storm in February.

We definitely plan to visit the area in the future.

    Guide to Sicily Island

Cabin camping near Sicily Island, Louisiana offers visitors access to several artificial lakes and the Mississippi River within an hour's drive. The region features gently rolling hills with elevations ranging from 50 to 150 feet above sea level, creating a mix of lowland forests and small bluffs. Winter cabin rentals remain popular as temperatures rarely drop below freezing, allowing for year-round outdoor activities.

    What to do

Fishing access from your dock: Lake Bruin State Park Campground provides excellent fishing opportunities with convenient boat docking options. "We were in site 4. The sites by the water have excellent places to dock your boat by your camper," notes Jason R. The lake supports bass, crappie and catfish.

River trail walking: River View RV Park & Resort features a paved walking path along the Mississippi River. "There is a nice paved trail on top of the levee," mentions Art Z., who visited in January. The trail offers views of river traffic and wildlife along the shoreline.

Swimming options: The lakes in the area provide various swimming opportunities during warmer months. At Clear Springs Recreation Area, "It has a swimming area in the lake, one side shallow and sandy for smaller swimmers, one side deeper," according to Jill N. This setup accommodates different swimming abilities in one location.

    What campers like

Spacious waterfront settings: Many campers appreciate the cabin and RV sites with unobstructed water views. At Lake Bruin State Park Campground, "Sites 3,4,5 are oriented where you see the water when you open your door," explains Jason R. The park's layout maximizes water visibility from select sites.

Clean facilities year-round: Cabin campers consistently mention the cleanliness of facilities. "Bath houses were super clean, all weekend. The park was full," reports Bruce F. about Lake Bruin State Park. This attention to maintenance enhances the cabin camping experience when using shared facilities.

Seasonal activities: Different seasons offer varied experiences at these campgrounds. At River View RV Park & Resort, "Clean and friendly. Looks to be off season in Sept and was quiet. Would highly recommend. Rates were very reasonable this time of year," shares Paul P., highlighting the cost benefits of off-peak visits.

    What you should know

Limited supplies at most campgrounds: While some locations have small stores, selection is limited. At River View RV Park & Resort, "There is a small grocery/gift shop. And a guest lounge," notes Joel R., but serious provisioning requires advance planning.

Reservation systems vary: Not all cabin locations accept advance bookings. Brad's Old Ferry Landing Campground & RV Park operates on a first-come basis while others require reservations. "Brad is kind and wonderful. It is in a beautiful woods. We planned to stay 3 nights. Stayed a full month," shares Mollie about this more flexible booking option.

Cell service inconsistency: Coverage varies widely between locations. At Clear Springs, "You'll get cell service on the upper loop. None on the lower," reports Johan S., which affects your ability to stay connected while at your cabin.

    Tips for camping with families

Child-friendly swimming areas: Several locations offer designated swimming zones for children. Lake Bruin State Park "has 2 playgrounds for children and a small swimming area that is roped off," according to Jason R., providing safer water play options.

Bike-friendly campground sections: Some campground areas are better suited for children's activities. At Clear Springs Recreation Area, Johan S. notes the lower loop "seems to be the best area for family with little ones as it's easier to ride bikes around," offering a practical insight for families bringing bicycles.

Playground access: Multiple cabin camping locations include playground facilities. River View RV Park & Resort features "a playground, a dog park, pool and hot tub," according to Joel R., providing recreation options beyond water activities.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection for privacy: The layout and spacing between sites varies significantly. At Lakeview Lodge, "RV sites behind the lodge, some semi permanent units there," explains Shane E., indicating where to expect more established neighbors versus temporary visitors.

Deck access at premium sites: Some waterfront locations offer special amenities. At Lake Bruin State Park, "Sites 4 and 5 have a 25x10 foot deck extending from rv site," reports Jason R., providing extra outdoor living space not available at standard sites.

Winter camping comfort: Cold weather visits require less planning than in many other regions. At River View RV Park & Resort, Art Z. shares, "We spent a few days at River View RV Park in January, visiting Natchez and enjoying the view of the Mississippi River," demonstrating the viability of winter cabin camping trips.
