Best Campgrounds near Hickman, KY

Campgrounds near Hickman, Kentucky cluster primarily around Reelfoot Lake, a unique flooded forest environment created by earthquakes in the early 1800s. The area features several established campgrounds with varying levels of amenities, including Reelfoot Lake State Park which offers both South and Airpark North campgrounds. Columbus-Belmont State Park, located in Columbus, Kentucky, provides additional camping options. Most facilities accommodate both tent and RV camping, with South Campground also offering cabin accommodations. Waterfront sites are available at several campgrounds, though vegetation sometimes limits views and water access.

The camping season typically runs year-round at most established sites, though weather conditions significantly impact the experience. Several campgrounds experience flooding issues during rainy periods, with drainage problems affecting site availability. According to one visitor, "If your forecast predicts rain, you might want to put your tent up on the pad" due to drainage issues at South Campground. Mosquitoes, gnats, and flies present significant challenges during summer months, with multiple reviews noting their prevalence, especially at waterfront sites. Winter and fall offer more comfortable conditions with fewer insects, while spring risks flooding at lower elevation sites.

Reelfoot Lake provides a distinctive camping experience centered around water activities. The flooded cypress forest creates a unique ecosystem that campers consistently mention in reviews. A camper noted that "this park is like nothing else, it's a flooded forest. You can kayak among this and other lovely bayou environments." Wildlife viewing represents a major attraction, with birdwatching opportunities including eagles, herons, egrets, and seasonal pelican migrations. Many campgrounds offer reservable sites with electric and water hookups, paved pads, and picnic tables. Bathhouses and facilities vary between campgrounds, with South Campground generally offering more amenities than Airpark North. While most sites have limited seclusion due to proximity and layout, the distinctive environment and wildlife viewing opportunities make this region particularly noteworthy for water-oriented camping experiences.

    Magnolia Campground & Country Store

worst customer service we've ever experienced

THIS REVIEW IS ONLY FOR THE CAMPGROUND, NOT THE STORE. We had high hopes for this very small campground. Our pull thru site was not quite level and just big enough for our truck and 30 foot trailer, but we lifted one side to be level and hooked up to sewer, water, and electric. We emailed them and told them which site we chose upon arrival. The nights were pretty quiet due to minimal nearby highway noise. We planned a four-night stay but only stayed for two nights. The restroom and the laundry room are not too bad. One restroom with one shower and one each washer and dryer in the laundry room.$5 to wash and dry(pay at the office.) On a walk with our dog, I was surprised by an unleashed dog that came from under one of the RVs that followed us for a bit. Okay...not sure if there are rules. We were never asked to sign the receipt because we never received a copy of the campground rules and policies(according to the receipt they emailed to us when we made the reservation.) On our final morning, electric was turned off by an electrician and we were not notified. After speaking with the electrician to understand the project, my husband walked to the store/office and spoke with a woman(owner?) and said we would be leaving due to no communication about this and we expected a refund for the 2-night remainder of our time. She said,"Sorry, we'll refund your money." Then the man(owner?) got done with a phone call and asked what was the matter. My husband explained that no one let us know about the power and the man said it would not be long...about an hour(the electrician told us about and hour per post which would make it a minimum of half a day as there were six sites on our row.) My husband explained he was disappointed with the customer service and the man replied with,"THEN PACK UP AND GET OUT OF HERE AND YOU'LL GET YOUR DAMN MONEY." We never received a refund. We were disappointed both by not being notified and in the level of customer service my husband received from the man. I was also removed from their Facebook page, which is a really odd gesture. PLUS...one of the other guests of the park with the first unleashed dog I encountered slowly circled our RV when my husband went to fill up with fuel so we could leave. Customer service should be the key to their existence; it makes or breaks and establishment. We have visited 30 states and over 140 park so far, yet have never been treated like this.

    Hinton RV Park

    Good 1 night layover

Very convenient layover. Nice looking park. Friendly staff. Level sites. Just a little picky and would say the bathrooms and laundry need updating.

    Boomland RV Park & Campground

    Great for an Overnighter

Boomland RV Park& Campground was super easy to find off I-57 near the I-55 junction. After passing the Boomland complex, the large campground sign clearly marks the right turn into the park. The campground operates first come, first served, so campers choose a site in either the 50/30-amp or 30-amp pull-through sections, all with full hookups, with power options clearly marked on numbered site posts. We drove the small campground loop to find a longer pull-through so we would not have to disconnect our 40-foot fifth wheel and F-450 for an overnight stay, and settled on site 20 with 50/30-amp service. The 30-amp section in the center of the campground appeared to have the longest sites overall. After parking and setting up, registration was handled inside the building by completing an envelope with name, vehicle license number, and payment, then dropping the envelope in the box. All utilities functioned properly, though the campground does not offer Wi-Fi. Cell service was solid with three bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile. We walked to the Boomland complex and noticed 24-hour diesel pumps that accept major credit and trucker cards, which could be convenient even though we did not fuel there. The Boomland complex was worth exploring, with a restaurant, gift shop, packaged foods, fireworks, souvenirs, and snacks, and during our November visit the seasonal Christmas shop was especially impressive. Boomland also offers a 10% military discount on non-food items. The campground does not have a designated pet area, but a large park-like space across the street provided plenty of room for off-leash exercise. Overall, this campground made a solid and convenient overnight stop.

    Reelfoot Lake State Park Campgrounds

    Under construction

Called to confirm campground was open. And was told it was. When I arrived, between the 20 open sites there were two groups of workers clearing large trees. I did not camp due to noise and safety.

Guide to Hickman

Camping near Hickman, Kentucky centers around Reelfoot Lake, a natural body of water formed by the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812. This northwestern corner of Tennessee offers shorelines with cypress trees that create distinctive wetland habitats for wildlife viewing. Fall and winter months generally provide more comfortable camping conditions with significantly reduced insect populations.

What to do

Pontoon tours: Take a guided boat tour at Reelfoot Lake State Park Campgrounds. These ranger-led excursions provide close wildlife encounters and historical information. "We did a bird watching tour that was incredible, we got close to so many different species," notes one visitor who stayed at the North Airpark campground.

Eagle watching: Winter months bring bald eagles to the region. "The visitor center is always a must, to check out the eagles, owls and snakes!" according to a camper at Reelfoot Lake State Park. Serious photographers often visit during winter months when migratory birds are most active.

Fishing: Multiple access points around the lake offer fishing opportunities. "Reelfoot lake is beautiful, this was our first time kayaking the lake and it was really nice," reports a regular visitor to Reelfoot Lake State Park. Fishing licenses are required and can be purchased at local bait shops.

What campers like

Lakefront camping experiences: Several sites provide water views at South Campground. "We snagged a lakeside spot and listened to the water lapping up against the bank while we slept. Quiet and peaceful," shares one visitor who gave the campground five stars.

Space between sites: Layout at some campgrounds prevents crowding. "The campground was laid out well in the fact that you didn't feel crowded at all, even when there were lots of campers," explains a visitor who stayed at South Campground. Sites with more buffer space include those in the 40s section.

Local restaurants: Several dining options near campsites. "We did choose one night to go to the resort restaurant (a fish house) next door to the campground (a quick walk even with small children)," notes a visitor to South Campground. Boyettes is another recommended local eatery mentioned by reviewers.

What you should know

Seasonal flooding: Many campgrounds experience water issues during rainy periods. A visitor to Airpark North Campground reported, "After making part of the first loop, we immediately saw why there were so many unreserved spots...A good 90% of the campground was underwater!" Spring visitors should call ahead for current conditions.

Insects: Summer months bring significant bug populations. "We almost didn't stay the night. Actually, we were schedule to stay two nights and left around 9 the next morning. The mosquitoes, gnats, and flies were so overwhelming that we couldn't go outside," warns a South Campground visitor. Fall and winter visits avoid most insect problems.

Site conditions: Uneven terrain affects some camping spots. "The land is low so if there is heavy rain it will be soggy in many places," notes a visitor to South Campground. Areas with cypress tree roots can create lumpy ground surfaces for tent campers.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: South Campground offers play facilities for children. "This campground had a lot of families, a simple but age appropriate playground (ages 5-12), and many spots with views of the lake," reports a visitor to South Campground. The playground is centrally located near shower facilities.

Mini-golf: Available at Columbus-Belmont State Park. "Columbus has plenty of areas to have a cookout, an abundance of trails to explore, a ton of scenery for your eyes to enjoy, history woven into it's fabric which is narrated to you by way of signs and a museum, a beautiful campground, a pleasant little food shack with reasonable food prices, and cute mini Golf course!" reports a visitor.

Civil War history: Educational opportunities for school-age children. "Great little Civil War museum," notes a Columbus-Belmont visitor. The park offers self-guided walking tours through historic trenches with interpretive signs appropriate for elementary-age children and older.

Tips from RVers

Hook-up availability: Options vary across campgrounds. "The sites that back up to the river are full hookup," notes a visitor to Columbus-Belmont State Park. Sites with the best views often have fewer amenities, requiring strategic planning for longer stays.

Leveling requirements: Many sites require adjustments. "These sites were paved, but not level, so be prepared to level," advises a Columbus-Belmont camper. Bringing appropriate leveling equipment is essential for RVs at most area campgrounds.

Site width considerations: Some areas accommodate larger rigs better than others. "Site 43 has trees on both sides of the pad and, based on comments from another camper, can be difficult to back in a larger camper," warns a visitor to South Campground. Reserving early provides better options for larger RVs.
