Equestrian camping near Jamestown, Kentucky offers access to extensive trail systems throughout the Cumberland Plateau region. This area sits at elevations between 700-1,500 feet with a moderate climate that supports camping from April through October. Many campgrounds maintain direct trail access without requiring horse trailering, with terrain varying from rocky outcrops to forested paths alongside rivers and lakes.
What to do
Horseback riding at Dale Hollow Lake: Horse sites are available at Dale Hollow State Park Campground, located near the Kentucky-Tennessee border. "Sites: horse sites available. Wooded area around campground. Semi-private sites," mentions Benjamin C. The horse campground sits adjacent to the regular campground.
Trail exploration from Bear Creek: The Big South Fork area offers diverse terrain for riders of all skill levels. "We stayed here even though we didn't have horses, but those with horses have priority. According to the others at the campground, there are a lot of horse camps and facilities in this area," writes Dan N. about Bear Creek Horse Camp.
Swimming options: When not riding, campers can cool off in nearby lakes. "The campground is surrounded by lake. Has a beach for swimming and playgrounds for the kids," notes Lee-Ann R. about Green River Lake State Park Campground.
What campers like
Spacious camp loops: Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park features a unique campground layout. "Campsites are on loops off the main loop/road. It puts 7-8 sites in a circle so it's possible for families to rent multiple sites in same loop. Plenty of room for kids to play and also has a swimming pool," writes Kenny P.
Riverside camping: For a different camping experience, Clayton Geneva Memorial Campground offers waterfront options. "Sanded, river front tent sites. The camp sites are also shaded, very comfortable even in July. Great place for canoe, kayak & swimming activities," says Amber H.
Covered accommodations: The True West Campground & Stables offers unique options beyond standard campsites. "We stayed there while running the KAT section 2. Great staff. Lots of room for horses. They had campsites, covered wagons and cabin space," reports Pam B.
What you should know
Primitive sites have limitations: The primitive camping options can be challenging after rain. "Only 2 of the 6 sites are usable if it has rained within a week of your stay. Would not recommend for large groups unless you enjoy sleeping in mud," warns Kayla L. about Clayton Geneva Memorial Campground.
Seasonal amenities: Some campground amenities change with seasons. "The downside was the store was closed and the wifi we expected wasn't on. Since this was a working trip, we had to go to town and get wifi at the library," shares Joey about Green River Lake State Park.
Water connection distance: Some hookups require extra equipment. "Only downfall here is their isn't really a place to access gorgeous dale hollow lake without a boat... I also wish they would have mentioned the length to water hookup. We ended up having to go buy a longer water hose bc the hookup was more than 30 foot away," notes Beth H.
Tips for camping with families
Circle campsite benefits: The circular layout at Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park creates ideal spaces for children. "I love the way this campground is set up. Sites are in sections in small loops. Very good for families. Kids can ride their bikes around the circle. Playgrounds are everywhere," shares Beth H.
Activity options: Beyond riding, families find plenty to do. "A lot of trails, good clean pool, nice clean bathrooms, excellent staff!" says Lori H. about Dale Hollow State Park, adding "My only complaint is I didn't have more time to spend."
Shade considerations: When tent camping with children, shade matters. "Our site (L4) was shaded all day long, which is important when you tent camp. The grounds are well kept. Plenty of park hosted activities for kiddos and adults," notes Lori H.
Tips from RVers
Site layout consideration: The campground design affects the camping experience. "The only reason I went with 4 stars is the fact that the camping spots are a little close together for my liking. Other than that, the staff were very nice, there are great amenities, and the bathrooms were clean," notes Thomas M. about Bandy Creek Campground.
Full hookup availability: True West Campground accommodates RVers with horses. "Beautiful campground, nice level spots that are easy to get in and out of, dump station on site which was very easy to get to. Barns are well kept and clean," reports Heather S., adding "Water all throughout the barn and easy to get to."
Shaded vs. unshaded sections: At Green River Lake, site selection matters for RVs requiring shade. "Easy check in and nice level sites close to the water. The newer section has very few trees for shade. The older section had plenty of shade and nice sites," advises Doug and Terri C.
