Very scenic place!! We spent 6 nights here, hiked & biked a lot. Off season, so some of the amenities were closed (pool looks awesome). The campground itself isn't really all that great, prepare for some levelling. We lucked out in the B loop, as a small trail (Grassy Overlook trail) took us to see the northern lights one evening. I highly suggest stopping here for a few nights, an under rated area.
This campground is pretty new and not too large, making it a nice quiet getaway. All the sites are concrete with nice gravel between, along with picnic tables and firepits. Because it's isolated in the trees, you can't even hear the main road!
One thing we liked is the great drainage. Even on the rainy days, there were almost no puddles due to good landscaping and slight slope. The water pressure is really strong, be sure to use your pressure regulator!
The bathhouse is nice and clean. There's a playground with slides and such here, too.
We were here during the month of October and the owners and helpers decorated the area with pumpkins and little scarecrows.
The drive up from the main road is 85% paved with nice new asphalt. Just a short section that's gravel. On the nice days, we would walk all the way from the campground down the hill to the main road and back.
There's Wifi available, and it was at least as good as our AT&T cell connection, and we were able to keep our Starlink on pause, saving us a month's cost there.
We will definitely be staying here again. No question.
The only negative I can add is that there's no real "office" to receive packages. We had to replace our rig's AC unit, and the owner allows me to ship it to his house about a mile away. When it arrived I drove over and picked it up. For other stuff, I just got a post office box in town. (They don't do General Delivery at this USPS location.)
The map for this campground isn’t quite accurate. Also, the price is $24 p/ night not $14. Not quite what we were looking for.
Roads in campground are rough in places. Electrical boxes are in rough shape at some sites. 30 amp kept tripping the breaker. WiFi does not work. Several sites have full hookup but sewer hookups need to be repaired and water hookups are far away.
Stayed 4 nights in section D. Our site was ok. There were a lot better sites to stay though. Staff was helpful and friendly. We had full hookups. Lots of shade.
This campground had some good features: hookups and bathhouse were good, location is very pretty, staff clearly take good care of things. Mostly older folks mid week so pretty quiet.
But for some reason there is a path that goes through several campsites. We booked one of these sites without knowing (B12), which meant we had strangers walking through our campsite all the time. Our dogs hated it and so did we! Also sites are close together, most aren’t level, and some are in clear disrepair. They also do a good job cleaning the bathhouses, but they do it from 8-9am which is also when many people are trying to use them.
Great place to camp along side the creek or rv lots with mountain views. Walking distance to Clinch River. Kayak, Hiking, Biking, spacious lots
A “secret spot” that holds a special place in my heart.
I spend on average 10 days at a time camping in the primitive grounds (April/May, Aug/Sep & end of October 2023 ) all five spaces are nicely kept and a large communal fire pit is wonderful. Even when all sites are full. There’s plenty of space. Porter Johns on site as well (and nicely maintained for what that’s worth! )
By far - the best camp ground I’ve visited in terms of Hosts, rangers, amenities if needed, scenery and solitude.
Take bear and coyote warnings SERIOUSLY my friends. I’ve seen plenty out there but never had a problem taking proper precautions. Also the crows - smarter than normal haha they WILL wake you up earlier than the other birds demanding you make breakfast and leave so they can then hop around your camp.
Your cell service will be spotty / non existent on trails around the area… even when you see a road running parallel to your hike .. plan accordingly. (And bear spray people. Please. Just take it)
Plenty of wood split ($4 a bundle. Ice $2 a bag) and hosts will graciously bring wood to your camp site <3
The “trail” off the primitive site doesn’t seem to be on a map - and I heard many different variations of where it went. So I hiked the whole thing just for y’all! It’s an in and out(maybe a mile give or take total) that dead ends to PRIVATE property. (So obviously don’t proceed past gate) Lots of beautiful growth, cool in the summer with shade - nice quiet trail for dogs - half way is definitely less of a beaten path. Use caution.
HIGHLY recommend getting in before last light. Especially if you’re towing anything, roads are steep and winding getting to and from camp/cabins. And lotssss of deer / rabbits at dawn and dusk jumping around.
In a nutshell - this park gets a 10/10 from a solo female camper. Everyone is mindful of one another’s space and solitude - however in true Appalachian fashion everyone also looks out for you and always ready to lend a helping hand.
We drove up a twisty road with a few hairpin turns, wondering if there is really a campground. We got to the top and there were two loops of campsites wuth electric, and we were the only ones there. We were surprised to find clean flush toilets and hot showers.
It's an old style campground where you put $20 in an envelope. Continuing on there is a short walk to a lovely overlook. There are very nice picnic shelters.
Our only complaint was the place had a number of lampoles with lights that were on all night. I realize people like to be able to see the roads and bathrooms, it was just a bit strange to be so remote and not have it darker.
Great experience, the lady who took my booking was super helpful and friendly. Campground is quiet and feels very safe. Nestled nicely in the hills in the Pennington gap . Lots to do within easy driving distance. Overall a great experience
This campground is a hidden gem. It's in the hills, far off the beaten path, and half of the campsites are right on the water. In addition to campsites, the park has picnic areas, bathrooms, showers, a playground, and a boat ramp.
Campsites have hookups for electric and water, with a dump site nearby. There are also picnic tables and fire rings, with firewood available to purchase.
Access to the camp may be tough for larger rigs as theres a few miles of windy, one-lane roads with switchbacks, drop-offs, and the occasional washout.
There is also no cell service here, so be prepared to unplug and unwind. =)
This area looks to be prone to flooding in the the spring months when the snows thaw so time your visit accordingly.
The men's bathrooms don't appear to have been cleaned in awhile and weren't cleaned during my week there. Only half of the toilets would flush.
It's a popular place for the locals with kids on the weekends so if you're looking for peace and quiet it's best to visit during the week. Great place to let the kids run wild and make friends though.
Perfectly level spot with water and electric. The river was 60 feet from our site. Host was awesome, all the regulars were super nice. It’s a great view at a great price.
Definitely back off the main road nice people that run it. Quite, and people were friendly. We visited Natural tunnel and Wilderness Road. They did have internet.
Not what I figured it would be but considering it was alright

Ashley here with The Dyrt, extending a warm welcome to Roaring Shoals Farm. Nearby waterfall and natural rock formations to explore. Schedule a tour to see the cows. This is the perfect place to immerse yourself in nature, while still being close to amenities. Book your stay today and leave them some love.
Smooth paved roads. Hilly. $12 for senior pass with electric. Nice dump station.
The campground was nice, the staff friendly. Apparently there is a lot of bear activity, although we did not encounter one. The sunsets are to die for!
We were there on Thursday thru Saturday. Thursday was so nice and quiet and then the weekend crew came in on Friday and it filled up fast. Unfortunately our neighbors were very noisy!!! We stayed in loop A, the other loops had many campers set up for the recent flood victims. Loop A was our favorite and it was close to the lake!
Stayed a couple of nights and we had a blast. Hiking right near the campground and lake is not far away at all.
Love that the beach wasn’t far from our site. People was friendly!
The bathrooms and showers was clean. They have a place to do laundry. Very nice playground, basketball court, swing, and volleyball court. We got to fish right beside our camper. Definitely recommend!
Our campsite was supposed to be 38’ long but my 28’ camper was all that could fit, barely. Water spigot is far away from the site so I had to go purchase another water hose. Zero cell reception and no wifi. No television reception either. Almost everyone’s site was not flat and took a lot of work to get campers close to level, (watched people pull out after an hour trying to level). No extra parking for vehicles, just drive up into whatever muddy area is around your site. “No outside alcohol” signs everywhere.
A great RV park& Campground with plenty of access. Many pull through sites. Grass between each site. Fire pits and picnic tables at each site. Very nice owner, very friendly. The bath house was clean and decorated very nice. Looks like it has been freshly painted. A wonderful covered pavilion with lots of tables and gas grills. They even had season firewood available for a couple dollars. They even have a draw bridge to walk across the powell river to access the Big Stone Gap town's walking trail. It is truly a hidden gem.
Quiet campground with a river view. The hosts are very friendly. They enforce the rules so if you are looking for a quiet retreat, this is the spot. If you’re looking for more of a party atmosphere than I would skip this.
We camped here for 3 nights with our dogs. Our site was in the B loop and had no water or electricity. It was surrounded by a lot of trees, so it had shade. It was a short walk to the bathhouse which was very clean with nice showers.
The campground has 4 different loops. I personally liked the B loop the best because everything was very close to it like hiking trails, laundry facility, basketball court, and a little camp store which has ice and firewood available.
The state park also has a lodge, cabins, and a beautiful lake. There is a restaurant in the park. We tried it for lunch and it was good. The landscape in the park was just beautiful. The overlooks, especially the tower overlook, are gorgeous. There are several hiking trails. Be aware that the loop is extremely strenuous and takes 4 to 5 ours. I really liked that the trails are not heavily trafficked.
We would definitely camp here again. All the park staff, hosts and volunteers were super nice and very helpful.
