What to do
Cave exploration: Carter Caves State Resort Park offers multiple cave tours beyond just the standard options. "Lots to do hiking, fishing, caves and caverns to explore. Campgrounds was clean. You will need extra water hose and extension cords to get hooked up in a lot of the sites though," notes Ron & Bonnie D.
Kayaking: The Ole Cornfield Campground provides river access with shuttle service. "We went kayaking (they have a kayaking service on site) and played in the river. Far enough away from the road that we didn't hear any noise, just the river running," explains Karen P. The campground sits directly on the Licking River with rental options available.
Hiking: Shawnee State Park maintains well-marked trails through forested terrain. Marc H. reports, "North of the campground there is a lodge with cabins and larger fishing lake. The campsites are very close together and the campground was full when I was there. It was surprisingly quiet at night." Many trails connect directly to cabin areas.
What campers like
Spacious cabin sites: Twin Knobs Recreation Area features well-separated cabin areas. "The campground is in a wooded area and each campsite is separate by woods from the nearby sites. There are shower and toilet facilities close by. The campground is located on a lake," describes STEPHEN H.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Zilpo Campground cabins offer excellent wildlife observation. "Nicer spot then twin knobs in my opinion. Plenty of nice spots to choose from and you can look through and find one to your preference and reserve. In walking distance to the lake so you can have a nice swim," says Megan D.
Clean facilities: Ashland Huntington West KOA maintains high standards for their cabin rentals. "KOA staff was very friendly and accommodating. We were able to stay extra days without any problems. The campground has miniature golf, a playground, a fenced area for dogs, a pond and a swimming pool," notes Joseph C.
What you should know
Utility connections: Some cabins require additional equipment. At Carter Caves, Chris B. mentions, "One of my all time favorite places in Ky to camp. The scenery is always relaxing, and the campgrounds are always welcoming. The park has a lot to do, not just the caves. There's tons of waterfalls off the trails."
Reservation timing: Most cabins fill quickly between April and October. Reserve 3-6 months in advance for weekend dates.
Limited cell service: Many cabin areas have minimal reception. "We stayed for an overnight. It was clean, and uncrowded. They were flexible. The first site we had we were unable to set up our StarLink so we scoped out another site where there were no trees," reports Shirley M. about Shawnee State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Sandy Springs Campground offers structured family programs. "The campsite is totally geared towards family fun! The owners are so hospitable, that you feel like family! My kids were busy nonstop with planned fun activities! And they had things for the adults as well," shares Emily W.
Shallow water play areas: Several sites feature safe spots for children to splash. At Falls Campground, "If you want a place for your kids to play and ride bikes, this is it. Campsites are a little close in some areas but when you are here, you are family!" notes Cathi.
Enclosed playgrounds: Many cabin areas include fenced play spaces. Look for sites with direct cabin-to-playground visibility.
Tips from RVers
Extension cords needed: Pack additional power cords for cabin sites. "The sites are level and pull through with 50 amp service. There is city water available and a dump station. Very clean place and the staff are great to work with," explains Karen P. about The Ole Cornfield.
Bathroom access: Cabin locations vary in proximity to facilities. Consider sites closer to bathhouses when traveling with children.
Leveling requirements: Some cabin pads require additional adjustment. "Sites are all clean and level and the bathrooms are clean," says Karen P. about Twin Knobs Recreation Area.
