Best RV Parks & Resorts near Coon Rapids, IA

Springbrook State Park Campground offers electric RV sites with 50-amp and 30-amp hookups, located approximately 30 miles from Coon Rapids. The park maintains RV sites with picnic tables and fire rings, though several reviews note the campground primarily caters to RVs rather than tents. Des Moines West KOA Holiday, open April through October, provides full-service RV sites with 50-amp electricity, water, and sewer connections. Big-rig friendly sites accommodate larger motorhomes, with additional amenities including a market and trash service. Nations Bridge Park features electric sites with 30-amp service, grey water access, and a dump station. "The sites are a bit packed side by side, back to back, with the few good sites continually reserved," noted one RV camper.

Full hookup options exist at several parks within driving distance, though availability varies seasonally. Jesse James Gang RV Hookup maintains six RV sites with electric, water, and sewer connections in a no-frills setting. Cell service fluctuates throughout the region, with Springbrook State Park notably having "absolutely zero cell reception" according to multiple reviews. Most parks permit pets, though specific restrictions may apply. Dump stations are available at larger facilities, though one visitor mentioned "long waits" at single-station facilities during busy periods. Electric-only sites typically offer water spigots throughout the grounds. RV travelers should note that some local municipal parks like Casey City Park provide basic electric sites at lower rates, described by one reviewer as "quiet and affordable" for overnight stays.

    Dolliver Memorial State Park Campground

    Beautiful and tranquil

Dolliver State Park was our maiden voyage in our travel trailer and it was obvious we were pitiful newbies! The park's beauty and tranquility did get disturbed a couple times when our dogs got loose (newbs!). The park staff were friendly and very helpful as were our fellow campers. The sites are mostly level with picnic tables and fire rings. Sites range from shady to sunny and the reservation website depicts the sites with a small photo and details about the amount of slope and shade. Cell service was good but no WiFi without a hotspot for us. We had fun, learned a lot and plan to camp here again!

    Adair City Park

    Great overnight spot

Park was clean and close to highway. Husband said bathrooms were clean enough. Didn't use the showers. Arrived around 10pm on a Tuesday and there were 3 spots left. Not all spots could accommodate big rigs. About 8 sites total with electric and water hookups. $15/night for RVs and $6 for tents. Drop box and dump station by the bathrooms. Police rolled through shortly after we arrived. Safe area now but marker says this is the site of Jesse James first train robbery in July 1873. Would definitely come back if passing through.

    Jester County Park

    Nice, Quiet CG

Nice CG located on the North end of Saylorville Reservoir. Camped in the upper CG site#145. Numerous shade trees, gravel pad and room for our 20' trailer and TV. CG has a kids playground, hiking trails, Equestrian Center, golf course and nature center. Plenty to do with the city of Ankeny just 15 minutes away. CG was fairly empty until around Thursday and filled on the weekend. Seniors can get$5 off per day of their reservation. Dump station is at the entrance of the CG. We camped at Jester Park in a Travel Trailer.

    Des Moines West KOA Holiday

    Nice modern KOA

Large modern KOA with sites to accommodate all sizes of rigs and also tent campers. Gravel sites require some leveling. Not much privacy between sites nor shade. Bathhouses were clean and private. Laundry available. Off leash dog area available. Convenient to John Wayne’s birthplace and covered bridges of Madison County. Bulk propane tanks were on site for winter campers. Camper cabins available. Small store with Hunt Brothers pizza to order. Gathering room on site and pedal car racetrack. Verizon cell signal was good. Garbage dumpster and dump station on site.

    Timberline Campground

    Beautiful forested overnight stay

We called ahead to see if they had sites available that night. Arrived just before the office closed at 7pm. They were ready for us and escorted us to our pull-through full-hookups site near the front of the campground. This is a huge property but laid out in different sections that each have their own flavor. The pull-throughs near the front are level, gravel pads with grass all around. Other areas are forested and some are hilly. Full-hookups worked fine. We stayed in site 121, which faces an open grassy area backed by a little forest that echoed with beautiful wildlife sounds in the evening. There are no campground lights except at the restrooms, so it’s great for stargazing! The restrooms were good.

    Pottawattamie County Fairgrounds

    Nice, quiet spot.

Hidden gem. Just a few mins off I-80 but no noise or signs of heavytraffic. Cute, quaint little town. All pull through spots and all sites are level. Not all spots have picnic tables or fire rings but there were very few campers so we had our pick of spots. Playset for younger kids. Golf course and pool in town. Nice shade trees. Bath house had flushing Toilets. Showers weren't very clean but we didn't need to use them. Perfect for a quick stop and very affordable at $20 for full hookups.

    Spring Lake County Park

    Family Tradition

We love to return here every year!

Recently updated two-way fresh-fill/santiary dump station. There is Ice Cube Consessions and the skating rink from Memorial Day through Labor Day every year. Great long-term hosts really make this park feel like going home.

    Prairie Rose State Park Campground

    Peace & quiet

Reserved electric unit 090 for the weekend, which had a scenic corn field for a backdrop - this is Iowa! Paved roads, level gravel sites, wide & mowed trails, clean pit toilets and a layout that isn’t too cramped. The pond has multiple shoreline fishing spots with picnic tables and a cleaning station. Basic playground in front of the beach which is a short drive or a ~1 mile trail walk away.

    Timberline Campground

    Month Family/Work Camp

Great, safe, and quiet campground. Beautiful site on a pond, clean bath houses, cool weekend amenities, and since we came in October, pretty empty after Labor Day during the week.

Owners very easy to work with, propane refill was easy, and payment schedule was convenient.

Overall, would 100% come back to this campground in the future and would love to see it in the summer!

Guide to Coon Rapids

Camping sites near Coon Rapids, Iowa sit within the western edge of the Des Moines Lobe landform region, characterized by gently rolling hills and prairie pothole wetlands. The area experiences four distinct seasons, with summer temperatures averaging 70-85°F and winter temperatures often dropping below freezing. Most RV campgrounds remain open from April through October, with a few sites providing year-round access during milder winter periods.

What to do

Hiking trails: Springbrook State Park offers multiple hiking paths through mature forests. "Lots of nice hiking trails. They have 25% of their sites designated as walk in sites," notes one camper about the Springbrook State Park Campground.

Fishing opportunities: Nations Bridge Park provides fishing access with views of the water from campsites. A reviewer at Nations Bridge Park mentioned, "Views of the water and walking trails from the site. The showers are a bit primitive but plenty of hot water."

Recreational activities: Multiple campgrounds offer additional recreation beyond standard camping. "There are many organized weekend activities for families. Spaces are tight and some share electrical, so bring your connectors just in case," explains a visitor to Des Moines West KOA about their event programming.

What campers like

Disconnecting from technology: Several campsites offer limited or no cell service. "You'll love this little park if you want to really disconnect and get away from things as there was absolutely 0 cell reception where we were at. That's definitely not a bad thing since that's exactly what we were looking for!" writes a reviewer about their stay at Springbrook.

Clean facilities: Campground cleanliness ranks high in visitor priorities across RV campgrounds near Coon Rapids. A camper at Des Moines West KOA Holiday praised, "We stayed one night in a basic cabin. AC was on upon arrival- check in/out was quick and easy! Bathrooms were immaculate!"

Family-friendly atmosphere: Multiple RV parks cater specifically to families with children. "The pool was refreshing for the girls and all of the activities kept them busy and having fun! All while being close to the city but the beauty of the country!!!" shares a summer visitor to Des Moines West KOA.

What you should know

Seasonal closures: Some facilities close during colder months. A visitor to Nations Bridge noted, "Our review would be 5 stars, but all the restrooms were locked for the season, and the only signage was on the doors of the facilities. No signage about the closures at the self registration."

Site spacing concerns: Several campgrounds feature tightly arranged sites. A camper at Shady Brook Camping & RV Adventures observed contrasting experiences: "We looked at the other reviews and it talked about it being so close to the freeway, but we didn't hear a sound. It was really in a good perimeter of trees and lots of shade and level camp spots."

Tent camping limitations: Some RV parks offer minimal tent camping accommodations. A visitor to Springbrook State Park explained: "Tent camping spots are clustered mainly in the middle of a loop, which feels a bit like a fishbowl with no privacy. It's mainly an RV/camper campground."

Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Lakes and pools provide cooling options during summer months. A visitor to Springbrook shared: "The lake is a peaceful spot to spend the early mornings, a nice place to fish (but don't expect to catch anything) and its beach is fun on the hot summer days, and tends to not be too busy."

Playground access: Several campgrounds maintain dedicated children's play areas. A reviewer at Nations Bridge Park mentioned, "Great park for our 3 year old," showing its family-friendly features.

Nature education: Some parks offer wildlife learning opportunities. A parent visiting Springbrook recounted: "They had a little nature center which was closed but the nice lady opened it for my kids to go in and let them hold snakes and turtles! They were so excited!"

Tips from RVers

Off-season camping: Year-round options exist for RVers traveling outside summer months. A winter traveler to Des Moines West KOA Holiday shared: "Office is open until 7pm which was very helpful as we arrived a little later than expected. Well kept, clean bathrooms with space heaters running to ensure they're warm during the December cold."

Road noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some RV campgrounds near Coon Rapids. A visitor to Shady Brook noted: "You could literally throw a rock from the entrance and hit a passing semi. Would be a possible extended stay for construction folks. Not for any peace and quiet camping."

Self-registration process: Several campgrounds offer after-hours check-in procedures. One camper mentioned: "Although we were arriving after 10pm, we could still check in without a reservation! They have an awesome 'self check in'. A board marked with available spaces we chose from."
