    Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

    Clean & Spacious

We pulled in around 4:30 in the evening. The sight was spacious with plenty of room in between sites. Since the weather was cooler , it was pretty sparse with other campers. We stayed 2 nights over the weekend. You are within walking distance to the beach within the park. The buildings have great architecture. The sight had 50 amp electric hook ups but no water or sewer connections, and we knew that going in. We had a back in sight #69. There was plenty of space on all sides. We have a 37’ motorhome and pulled a Jeep behind it. There was plenty of room to maneuver around. The sight also had a wood picnic table and fire ring for a wood fire pit. We will definitely be back! I wish I had taken more photos from the beach and beach pavilion.

    Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

Nice layout and a ton of nature activities

The state park is located within the boundaries of the Indiana Dunes National Park (formerly National Lakeshore), so don't get confused by this. There also is a national park campground, but it's closed in the winter.)

This state park has a nice layout because the sites seem to be staggered so that they don't back up to each other. Also, there is a good buffer space behind the sites and decent space between each site.

All sites have 20- 30- and 50-amp service available, plus almost all are a combination of a concrete pad and asphalt apron. Note that just because they're paved doesn't mean all of them are level. Each site has a fire pit and it appeared they all have grill grates on them.

One nice touch is that some sites have wider asphalt aprons so if you have a longer rig, you can put your towing vehicle or your towed vehicle off to the side once your rig is in place. Also, the ADA sites are nicely laid out with larger concrete pads so that even the fire pits are in the concrete section for ease of access.

Note that after Nov. 1, the water is shut off and bathrooms are shut down until spring, although there are vault toilets available.

You will hear a pretty regular stream of train whistles at this campground, but they aren't so loud as to be disruptive.

You can hike to the 1929 Dunes Pavilion and a large beach on Lake Michigan. The best hiking activity, however, and also easily accessible by walking from the campground, is the series of dune trails. The Nature Center, which sits between the campground and the trails, has some good visitor's information about the dunes, the flora and fauna, and the history of the area.

Once you finish seeing what you want in the state park, there's still the entire national park to see. Plus, there's a multi-use trail that runs for 9 miles along the state park and into the national park.

Cell service for Verizon was two bars but speeds seem to be good. Less signal and speed for Google Fi, but not terrible.

    Oak Lake RV Resort

We came for a weekend… Stayed nearly 2 weeks! Oak Lake RV Resort is where family memories are made.

6 people, 1 pup & a 44.4' Keystone Sprinter... Oak Lake RV Resort handled it all with ease & gave us the BEST camping trip ever! From the moment you drive up, staff are waiting in golf carts to guide you to your site & even help with setup. We were nervous about fitting our big rig, but pull-through site #17 made it flawless. Where else does that??

We originally booked August 22–25, extended to the 29th & then lucked into staying through Labor Day weekend. We canceled our other plans because Oak Lake had everything we wanted & more!!Pond swimming & obstacle course, movies on our inflatable screen, golf cart glow parades, s’mores, homemade campfire pizzas & endless family memories. The kids are still raving about it!

Rebecca deserves a huge shoutout for going above & beyond! Tom & Marianne, the owners, are amazing hosts who clearly pour their hearts into making Oak Lake special. Even the coin operated laundry was a lifesaver & convinced us we need a washer/dryer in our camper for future impromptu stays 😂.

We’re already talking about being put on the list for a seasonal site for next year bc we know we’ll be back again & again. Oak Lake RV Resort is Newton County’s hidden gem!!! If you’re searching for fun, hospitality & true family camping memories... THIS is the place!! Hands down, every time.

Enchanted Shores RV Park & Campground

    Never Again!

We booked here sight unseen due to temporary employment in the area.

    What a terrible mistake.

The best thing was, that there is "full hook up" here???

This place is old and run-down to say the least, there's not a flat spot on any of the roads. The sites are dirt with something green in between. The stinkest water we've ever smelled, horrible!!! Our sewer connection was nearly buried. There is a laundry area, I don't know what it's like, I'd never wash our close in that nasty water, we found a Laundromat. The lots are verious sizes of tiny. Most sites you're back to back to your neighbor. Your door faces your other neighbor's door, it's like you shared a site. We asked for a picnic table and got one, but when we left for a week, when we returned it was gone! Despite the high rent, there's no internet or cable TV, basically no emenities. We were told there was planned activities, but we weren't there long enough to find out. There's a area for long-term, yearly sites. Several of the trailers in that area were old with beat up decks, some surrounded by junk.

We installed interior security cameras to keep an eye on our rig. Then stayed in a hotel until we changed our job location.

We can't image a worse location. I should be condemned.

We feel bad for those who are on the road and fall into this trap for a place to stay on the way, or close to Chicago.

    Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

    Close by taste of nature

This is actually our second visit here. It’s only 20 minutes from our home, so we expect to come back many times. It’s a unique location about .5 miles from the actual beach and there’s a path/boardwalk that takes you right there. This is one of the few state parks that has a year-round heated bathroom with shower, so even with our popup camper we were able to take advantage of the decent weather for our first trip of the year. Sites are decent sized and have asphalt driveways with concrete pads. Sites are electric only, but there’s several water fills, even in winter. Very popular campground so you do have to book well in advance during regular season. Be aware that because it shares an entrance to the state park beach, entering on a summer Saturday or summer Sunday can take upwards of 45 minutes or more.

    Michigan City Campground

    Great campground, will return

This is a beautifully kept campground just outside Michigan City, IN. It is gated so will need to call in once you arrive to enter. We stayed  in the premium sites which were 90ft pull thought with 50A service, water and sewer, and the best wifi I have seen at a campsite. The cement patio was large with a picnic table and an adjacent fire pit. There is swimming pool and a game room, and a small store with the essentials, and propane.

You are close to Indiana Dunes and the downtown area of Michigan city. Good food, shops are close by.

By the way there are a number of cabins/mini homes to rent.

    Last Resort Campground

    Quiet, reasonably priced rest spot.

We stayed here two weeks while visiting friends in the area. The site was a little small but was pull through and full hookup. Even though we were close to a highway and railroad, traffic noise did bother us. The wifi did not reach out area but I know they plan to expand it's capabilities soon. The best part was free access to the pond, paddle boats etc and friendly staff. The low points were very hard (with odd smell) water to the point where we didn't trust using the on camp laundry. Make sure you have a good on-line water filter.

Guide to Griffith

RV camping near Griffith, Indiana offers convenient access to both urban and rural experiences across northwestern Indiana and northeastern Illinois. Located about 30 miles southeast of downtown Chicago, the area sits at approximately 630 feet above sea level with generally flat terrain. Seasonal considerations affect water availability at some campgrounds, with sites like Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort not turning on water before April 15th.

What to do

Lake activities at Oak Lake RV Resort: The family-oriented Oak Lake RV Resort in Fair Oaks features a swimming pond with an obstacle course. "Pond swimming & obstacle course, movies on our inflatable screen, golf cart glow parades, s'mores, homemade campfire pizzas & endless family memories," reports one camper who extended their stay to nearly two weeks.

River access for swimming: Lake Alexander RV Park provides access to the Kankakee River. "There's a river that's a 5 min walk from the campground that we swam in and it kept us cool from the heat," notes one reviewer who found this to be a perfect solution during hot weather.

Trail hiking opportunities: Near the Love's RV Hookup-Morris, visitors can explore hiking trails at William G. Stratton State Park and Gebhard Woods State Park where "you will be able to hike the I&M Canal State Trail." The area offers natural escapes within driving distance of this convenient overnight stop.

What campers like

Clean, modern facilities: The relatively new Love's RV Stop-Demotte has received positive feedback for its well-maintained grounds. "It just opened and it is well designed. The check in online is very easy," mentions one visitor who appreciated the simplicity and efficiency of the process.

Private beach access: Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park offers guests unique water recreation options. "You have access to the perks of the conference grounds including access to a small private beach on the lake, canoes and kayaks, life jackets, and a rec room when open," notes a recent visitor who stayed at site 27.

Budget-friendly options: Some campgrounds provide economical alternatives to Chicago-area hotels. According to one reviewer at Enchanted Shores RV Park & Campground, "$20. Yes, it's an hour from the city, but I'd take the drive over the bill at a nearby hotel." This price point offers significant savings for those willing to commute.

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Many campgrounds in the region have limited operating seasons. Lake Alexander RV Park charges "$38 (30-amp electric service) and $42 (50-amp electric service)" during their April 15 to October 15 season.

Reservation systems vary: Online check-in is available at some locations but not all. A reviewer at Love's RV Stop-Demotte recommends "registering ahead of time if possible" to streamline the arrival process.

Mobile home park atmosphere: Some RV parks cater more to long-term residents. At Woodland Village Mobile Home & RV Park, a visitor noted, "This place is more of a trailer park for more long term residents. They don't provide any showers toilets or wifi."

Water quality concerns: Check recent reviews about water quality before arrival. One camper at Enchanted Shores reported "The stinkest water we've ever smelled" which affected their experience significantly.

Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and activities: Oak Lake RV Resort offers organized activities for children. "Pulled in as the sun was coming down after a looong day of driving. Our site was right next to the playground and my kids had a blast swinging, climbing, and jumping while we set up camp," shares one parent.

Site selection for kids: At Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort, families appreciate the space between sites. "Partial hookups (sewer just outside of park behind hotel). $46/night (+fees) for a pull-through spot. Pet-friendly. Pleasant park with good pad," notes one reviewer who found the arrangement worked well.

Pet accommodations: Most RV parks in the area welcome pets. Lake Alexander RV Park is noted as being pet-friendly, with one camper mentioning there was "a nice big field for the dog to run" along with nature trails for walking.

Tips from RVers

Electrical issues: Check power connections upon arrival. At Love's RV Stop-Demotte, one RVer cautioned, "The only complaint I had is the site we were at showed a ground fault on the 50amp Circuit so I had to use the 30 amp circuit." Having adapters on hand can help solve unexpected electrical problems.

Big rig considerations: Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort accommodates larger vehicles with pull-through sites. "The site had 50 amp electric hook ups but no water or sewer connections, and we knew that going in... There was plenty of room to maneuver around," explains a motorhome owner who successfully navigated the space with their 37-foot vehicle.

Utilities information: Be aware of what hookups are available at each site. Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park offers "full hookup up" sites with a key-coded bathhouse, providing security for showering. Unlike some locations, concrete pads are available here for stability.
