Illini Campground — Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area

    Great family campground

We LOVE Hazlet! We have a popup camper and camp here often. It's a huge campground with a smaller reservable section and an extensive first come, first serve section. There are usually always spaces available. Sites are pretty level, are gravel, wooded, and spacious. There are several 'loops'' of sites that extend out and have water views. The shower houses are clean and air conditioned, there's a nice camp store that serves breakfast and basic lunches, and there is a nice large zero entry pool for a $5 fee on weekends. The campground hosts are sprinkled througout the grounds and are always friendly and accommodating. They have a huge Halloween event every year where people decorate their sites (pretty extensively) and there's a haunted house, then kids trick or treat from site to site. The campground also provides pumpkin painting contests and other fun activities. Better get there at least a week in advance for the halloweeen festivities- it fills up!

    Gun Creek

Lots of space by a Lake

RV or tent, book online at Recreation.Gov not all spots are level. Electric on most but not all have water. Campfire area and picnic table provided. Bathhouse is clean and park areas are all clean, dump station on site. We will be back and book closer to the lake in a level site.

    South Sandusky Campground

    Rend lake south sandusky

South Sandusky is a very nice campground with lots of trees, concrete pad, fire pit, playground, and bathroom facilities. It is wheelchair accessible and walking distance from the lake where you can swim, fish, boat, go tubing or just walk the trails.

    South Sandusky Campground

    Amazing View

We love tent camping at South Sandusky. many of the site are right on the lake and the sunrise and sunsets are always gorgeous. they have quiet hours from 10-6 and the bathrooms and showers are always really clean (but there are still usually lots of small insects). It’s also just a short drive from the South Sandusky swimming beach. It’s sometimes pretty rocky in the water so we usually wear water shoes. If you camp for the hiking though this isn’t my favorite site. There are lots of bike trails but for just hiking there are much better places.

Illini Campground — Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area

    Beautiful lake

We had reservations nearly one month ahead, and the campground was full, yet quiet and restful. Our site only had electric hookup, and there were two pit toilets in the cul de sac, and we never found the showers that were supposedly on site. The acorns were falling, and we nearly jumped out of bed when they struck our roof! No fault of the campground, but a mild annoyance nevertheless. There is a camp store but we didn't visit it. The nearby town of Carlyle has a Walmart and several fast food eateries, but only one independent restaurant, Mexican , which came highly recommended. We met campers that return here often, but it was our first time. We would stay again if in the area.

    Okaw Valley Kampground

Ok for a one night stay

The owners are friendly. The pool is well-maintained and pleasant. The campsite is an old KOA frozen in time. It's clean but dated. Water and electricity are available on site with an old picnic table. Only one bathhouse (toilet, shower) is a bit far from our site.

    South Marcum Campground

    Best campground on Rend Lake!

This is hands-down the nicest campground on Rend Lake. With hundreds of sites to choose from with some being tucked into the woods and others sitting right on the lake including some walking intense fights this campground is one of the nicest that you’ll find in Illinois. Plenty of bathrooms and bath houses as well as playgrounds and spacious campsites for larger RVs and plenty of access to the lake.

    Okaw Valley Kampground

    Great Stop-off

We stopped here on our way home for one night, but got in early enough to enjoy a walk and have a camp fire that evening. Small park but very long, narrow pull through sites on the full hook up side, there were some smaller water/electric sites that looked to be more of a parking lot that sites, but well spaced out and adequate. The camp host was very friendly and the camp store was well stocked.

Salem's inland location in central Illinois creates a temperate camping environment with moderate humidity and temperatures ranging from 50-85°F during prime camping seasons. The area sits at approximately 535 feet above sea level with surrounding terrain characterized by gently rolling hills and mixed hardwood forests. Campgrounds near Salem offer established amenities within a 40-mile radius, with several locations providing specialized accommodations including canvas safari tents and yurt camping options.

What to do

Kayaking and boating: Gun Creek Campground offers direct lake access for various water activities. One camper observed that "The lake is big enough for ski boats but nice for kayaks also" (Jennifer G.), indicating versatility for different water sports.

Year-round yurt camping: Salem, Illinois area offers yurt camping options that extend beyond traditional camping seasons. Several campgrounds provide canvas structures and yurts that allow for comfortable stays even in cooler months, with one camper mentioning how they "would stay again" even during off-peak times.

What campers like

Spacious, level sites: Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area offers well-designed camping areas with adequate spacing. StaceeQ Q. described it as having "Nice level sites next to the lake. Reminds me of when I was a kid and there were camp clubs."

Lake views: Many campers appreciate the waterfront locations available at several campgrounds. At South Sandusky, Gina J. mentioned, "many of the site are right on the lake and the sunrise and sunsets are always gorgeous," highlighting the scenic appeal of lakefront camping.

Clean facilities: Coles Creek Recreation Area receives consistent praise for its maintenance standards. Amurican L. stated, "I was thoroughly impressed with the upkeep of this area. The campground is well maintained and has plenty of hiking area, fishing area, and playing/swimming area for children."

Limited cell service: For those seeking a more disconnected experience, Forbes State Recreation Area offers natural isolation. According to Lori W., "there is very little cell service so it is a great place to be unplugged and enjoy time with friends and family!"

Close proximity to amenities: When staying near Salem, campers appreciate having stores within driving distance. Jennifer G. noted, "There's a dollar store in Farina and a grocery store in Kinmundy; both towns are less than 10 miles away."

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds in the Salem area require advance booking, especially during peak season. At Eldon Hazlet, one camper observed, "The campground filled up by 11am on Friday, which was a surprise to us" (Brooke C.), suggesting early reservations are essential.

Water quality varies: Some campgrounds have issues with water supply. One camper at Eldon Hazlet noted, "The potable water supply... was extremely dirty with a lot of copper colored solids. I drained the tank and filled with a spicket next to our site and had the same dirty water."

Site leveling challenges: At Gun Creek, many sites require leveling equipment. One review mentioned, "Absolutely must check how level the spots are before you book, as lots of sites are over 4 inch incline, which seems ok for Smaller rigs."

Electrical amperage: Check specific electrical needs against campground capabilities. Okaw Valley Kampground provides "Full-hookups with only a 50amp connection so if you are using 30 make sure you have a 50/30 adapter" according to James N.
