Illini Campground — Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area

      Great family campground

We LOVE Hazlet! We have a popup camper and camp here often. It's a huge campground with a smaller reservable section and an extensive first come, first serve section. There are usually always spaces available. Sites are pretty level, are gravel, wooded, and spacious. There are several 'loops'' of sites that extend out and have water views. The shower houses are clean and air conditioned, there's a nice camp store that serves breakfast and basic lunches, and there is a nice large zero entry pool for a $5 fee on weekends. The campground hosts are sprinkled througout the grounds and are always friendly and accommodating. They have a huge Halloween event every year where people decorate their sites (pretty extensively) and there's a haunted house, then kids trick or treat from site to site. The campground also provides pumpkin painting contests and other fun activities. Better get there at least a week in advance for the halloweeen festivities- it fills up!

      Benton KOA

A Great Overnight Stop Just Off I-57

Benton KOA Journey is an easy overnight stop just off I-57. Since we were already familiar with the campground layout, we called ahead to ask if we could go directly to our site on the opposite side of the road from the office and check in afterward. The staff gladly accommodated our request. We stayed in Deluxe Full-Hookup Pull-Through Patio Site 65, which made it easy to center our 40-foot fifth wheel on the utilities. The site was slightly off level, but we did not need to use blocks. The gravel patio featured a huge wheelchair-accessible picnic table, fire pit with cooking grate, stand-up charcoal grill, wooden swing, and bench. We received one bar on Verizon and two bars on T-Mobile. There are mature trees around the seven pull-through sites across the road from the main campground, but Starlink should work in most of them if you're able to position the dish around the trees. For this overnight stay, we used our T-Mobile Home Internet, which averaged 358 Mbps download and 2.7 Mbps upload. The campground Wi-Fi was adequate for light browsing. A fenced dog park was conveniently located near our site, and being across the road from the main campground helped reduce interstate noise. Overall, this is a clean, well-run KOA with exceptionally friendly and helpful staff, and a good overnight stop returning to our home base in southern Illinois to rest and dump tanks.

      Gun Creek

Lots of space by a Lake

RV or tent, book online at Recreation.Gov not all spots are level. Electric on most but not all have water. Campfire area and picnic table provided. Bathhouse is clean and park areas are all clean, dump station on site. We will be back and book closer to the lake in a level site.

      St. Francois State Park Campground

Excellent choice for quick weekend trip!

Had a wonderful weekend camping trip in the basic loop. Grass well-trimmed, campground pretty clean and full of families. Definitely a lot of kid noise, but I much prefer that to adults drinking into the night. Staff always cheerful and eager to provide a good experience; they do ride around every so often to check in on things. Camp host on site. Some sites certainly better than others; the biggest ones are near the entrance to the basic loop.

Bathrooms older and not spotless, but they stay on top of stocking them. Very well lit at night. Check-in station has patches, t-shirts, and firewood for sale in big bundles for $5. They do cover them when it rains.

There is definitely a friendly community atmosphere, but you can keep to yourself if that's your preference.

There is a nice 3-mile hike that begins at the campground.

      Giant City State Park Campground

      Nice Campground & Beautiful Park!

We stayed Easter Weekend here in the campground and had a great time. The campground is clean and maintained. Some sites are gravel and some are asphalt. Not sure if they are upgrading a little at a time?? There are plenty of trees for shade. Some sites are close together and some have more room in between them. The picnic tables are old and seem to be spread around as camper are moving them around. The main bathhouse is older, but nice and clean! There is a vault only bathroom at the back of the campground. No water hook up at each site, only electricity. . While you are here, check out the Lodge for dinner one night and climb to the top of the water tower observation deck for some amazing views! Make the quick drive to Makanda and explore the little hippy town. Don’t forget to take a stroll through the secret garden! . The Giant City Nature Trail and Devils Standtable were really pretty, easy strolls. The Trillium Trail is a little more rugged for those who prefer less crowded, slightly tougher trails.

      Hawn State Park Campground

      Favorite Campground

This is my favorite campground in Missouri. It has the best atmosphere with grand hiking, both day hikes and back country camping. I have stayed all over in this campground. The spring that runs through it is great in the heat of the summer and the huge pine trees provide excellent shade. There is not much cell service down in the valley, but calls will go out if you drive up the hill. The sites book up quickly so make sure to have a reservation before showing up.

      South Sandusky Campground

      Amazing View

We love tent camping at South Sandusky. many of the site are right on the lake and the sunrise and sunsets are always gorgeous. they have quiet hours from 10-6 and the bathrooms and showers are always really clean (but there are still usually lots of small insects). It’s also just a short drive from the South Sandusky swimming beach. It’s sometimes pretty rocky in the water so we usually wear water shoes. If you camp for the hiking though this isn’t my favorite site. There are lots of bike trails but for just hiking there are much better places.

      Hawn State Park Campground

      Tiny park packs a punch

Hawn State Park is tiny but excellent. There is a main loop of campgrounds all facing one another (e.g. little to no privacy) with electric hookups and reservations allowed (these fill FAST) then there are a few primitive walk up sites for tents only (no hookups, no reservations), and these are what I most recommend. You can camp right by the gugling creek with total privacy. Campgrounds have running water and showers from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

The park itself has lots of great hiking trails with unique ecology, geology, and plant life.

    Guide to Percy

Carlyle Lake and Rend Lake define the camping landscape near Percy, Illinois, with shorelines spanning over 133 miles combined. These two reservoirs provide the backdrop for cabin camping options located within a 45-minute drive of Percy. Summer temperatures average 85°F with occasional thunderstorms, making spring and fall popular for camping with more moderate weather conditions.

    What to do

Fishing at the lake: South Sandusky Campground provides direct water access for fishing enthusiasts. "Fishing. Swimming, hiking, boating, playgrounds. Water and sewer hookups with 30/50 amp electric. Lots of shade. Friendly staff," notes one visitor to South Sandusky Campground.

Hiking through unique terrain: Giant City State Park offers distinctive rock formations and forested trails. According to a camper at Giant City State Park Campground, "The Giant City Nature Trail and Devils Standtable were really pretty, easy strolls. The Trillium Trail is a little more rugged for those who prefer less crowded, slightly tougher trails."

Mountain biking: Paved bike trails run throughout the South Marcum area, with connections to longer routes around Rend Lake. A camper reports, "South Marcum Campground is a Corp of Engineers campground just of I-57 in southern Illinois with over 100 reservable campsites... The campground is on Rend Lake with swimming, fishing and boating."

    What campers like

Quiet waterfront locations: Gun Creek features numerous sites with direct lake access. "What a beautiful campground, it's our second time here. Some spots do have a fairly good slope to them," mentions a recent visitor to Gun Creek.

Forest camping atmosphere: Hawn State Park provides a distinctive pine forest environment. "Hawn is a lovely park just south of the city a few clicks. It's tucked away into the trees with ample shade and options for backpacking, backcountry hiking. The park is nice and sites are spaced out enough," notes a camper at Hawn State Park Campground.

Swimming beaches: Carlyle Lake offers designated swimming areas with sandy beaches. A visitor to Eldon Hazlet State Park mentions, "The campground hosts were sprinkled throughout the grounds and are always friendly and accommodating. They have a huge Halloween event every year where people decorate their sites (pretty extensively) and there's a haunted house, then kids trick or treat from site to site."

    What you should know

Campsite leveling challenges: Many sites at lakefront campgrounds require leveling equipment. A Gun Creek visitor warns, "It was a good view, also pretty RV heavy, but tent friendly. Grassy area, fire pit, stone table. The facilities are outdated and don't feel super clean."

Road noise considerations: Some campgrounds are positioned near major highways. "This KOA is not a typical KOA. The spaces were large and roomy. Showers and bathroom were very nice, too," shares a visitor to Benton KOA, though others mention interstate noise.

Seasonal closures: Corps of Engineers campgrounds typically operate March through November. According to a South Marcum camper, "South Marcum Campground is a Corp of Engineers campground just off I-57 in southern Illinois with over 100 reservable campsites... Most sites are level. Some are pull-through."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple camping areas feature dedicated play equipment for children. At South Sandusky, "We love the large beach. The campsites have a nice set up and are a decent size. The kids loved the playground. There were kids everywhere and everyone was very friendly!"

Halloween festivities: Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area hosts special October events. According to a visitor to Eldon Hazlet State Park, "This campground is worth a stay and hike around, even if it is on one of the shorter, easier trails."

Swimming options: Many locations feature both lake swimming and pools. "The campground gives campers plenty of room to spread out, lots of open space for the kids to play, and not crowded when we stopped by late July," notes a South Marcum visitor.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Perryville RV Resort offers full-service sites with sewer connections. According to a visitor to Perryville RV Resort, "Such a clean campground!! There are a ton of big trees and it is really shady. We love our time here."

Site selection strategies: Reserve waterfront sites for views but be prepared for extra foot traffic. "South Marcum is a very nice campground with lots of trees, concrete pad, fire pit, playground, and bathroom facilities. It is wheelchair accessible and walking distance from the lake where you can swim, fish, boat, go tubing or just walk the trails."

Dump station access: Corps of Engineers campgrounds maintain clean dump facilities. A South Sandusky visitor notes, "Full hookups to tent camping and spacious sites. This is a Corps of Engineer Campground so bring your America the Beautiful pass! Well maintained on beautiful Rend Lake in southern Illinois."
