    Eagle Creek State Park Campground

    Wooded Solitude / Family Friendly

Review of Drive In Tent Camping Site 2. Showed up on a Thursday night and had our pick of all the drive in and walk in sites. We decided on site 2 in the drive in area. Previous reviews and a book by John Schirle on Tent Camping in Illinois helped us with this decision as well. Decent maintained sites with some older picnic tables and fire rings, but let's be honest this stuff sits outside 24/7. Site 2 seemed to sit back the farthest with site 1 a close second. Both wooded sites that made for great shade and helped some when it was raining. Any two families looking for two sites could certainly set up and share the experience. Nice little cove behind them to try fishing. Just watch the hike down the path or ravine. Dog friendly, fresh water supply (hint put the handle all the way up and wait a few seconds), ability to store stuff in the car close by, outhouse toilets visible at the walk in parking lot, and helpful host for easy check in who even sells fire wood made for a great few days ($5 a bundle). Rated B/S site at a cost of $10 a night.

    Sangchris Lake State Park Campground

    Lakeside Relaxation

These walk in sites check all the boxes.  At the western part of the RV loop, is a peninsula of primitive tent camping spots to choose from.  About half the sites were filled by the second day we were there.  We settled on 62, which is spacious and provides access to the path from the front and behind where you can walk into site 64 as well.  A parking area with a single spot for each camp site is well marked and by two vault toilets.  Park staff and host were great.  A decent fishing spot is just in front of site 64.  $8 for IL residents is hard to beat, if you don't need an RV spot with electric.  A water source is also by the parking spots.  The weekend we were there the weather had cooled some and a great breeze was coming off the lake.  Springfield being so close is a bonus.

The only negative is like any spot and how previous people leave the camp looking before you are there.  Some garbage in the fire pit and random spots are par for the course in any state park.  Pick up the trash and dump it in the dumpster by the parking lot.  Leave the site better than you found it is our motto.

There is always something to do here and the owners strive to make it a family place by providing many activities on the weekends. The owners have done an amazing job on this campground and have made it one of the best campgrounds around to create that lasting experience with our children before they grow up!!!

    Friends Creek Campground

    Clean, spacious sites, nice amenities

Friends Creek is a small campground with nice spacious sites and super clean bathhouses and pit toilets. The fire pits are well kept and the camp host was very kind! He came around with suckers for the kids and just to check in. We hiked a bit on the trails and played in the creek. Highly recommend.

    Lone Point

    Lakeside wonder

I tent camped in a large tent, car camping, Friday and Saturday night.

I have camped here as well as all the Lake Shelbyville campgrounds many times before. Lone Point campground is actually 14 miles from my rural home in Shelbyville, IL. and is my favorite Lake Shelbyville campground.

There are many nice sites here along the lake and in the wooded areas around the lake. The sites have electricity and water near by. Fire rings with grates, lantern posts, picnic tables and level parking areas. Some sites have limited level areas for tents, but there are lots of sites to choose from. I like camping here because it is the least visited campground on the lake, so it can be quiet and you can get a site with a view. The bathrooms are clean and there is a shower house. There is a 12 mile trail from Lone Point to Eagle creek along the lake shore line, this trail is moderate to difficult hiking. I recommend this campground over all the others on Lake Shelbyville. The campgrounds and park are maintained by the US Army corps of engineers and reservations can be made online through recreation.gov.

The main campground closes on Labor Day however there is a small section near the boat ramp open year round and this has nice sites in it with camp stove stands as well as grills and awesome fire pits. The trail Chief Illini trailhead is located in the parking area and the trail is fairly well maintained during the regular campground open season. The trail is open year round and can be hiked from one end to the other spending a night at either campground for return trip the next day.

    Clinton Lake State Recreation Area

    Memorabe trip

One of our favorite camping trips so far!

We stayed in the J loop, which was more family friendly and very close to the beach. There was a walking path from our site to the shore which was perfect for our young family to go back and forth on.

Sites were somewhat open but there were tons of trees and grass behind each spot so it didn’t feel so exposed. We loved the option for fishing and swimming in a nearby watering hole.

We heard the toilets/shower house were in need of TLC so we brought a portable toilet since we have small kids who would not make it to the outhouse so we never used the campground toilet/facilities.

Definitely our vibe of being more secluded and on the water.

Guide to Blue Mound

Tent and RV camping options surround Blue Mound, Illinois with most sites located 30-50 miles from town. This central Illinois area sits at approximately 650 feet above sea level with warm summers reaching 85-90°F and winters dipping below freezing. Camping season typically runs April through October, though several parks remain open year-round with limited winter facilities.

What to do

Fishing access points: Sangchris Lake State Park Campground offers multiple fishing opportunities from within the campground. "Several fishing docks in campground," notes Greg S., while another camper explains, "We always get sites with our own private dock to fish from."

Hiking trails: The Chief Illini trail at Wolf Creek State Park Campground provides options for day hikes or overnight adventures. "There are several miles of horse trails and the area is set apart from hiking trails and the other camping areas," explains Michael M. Wolf Creek maintains "hiking trails and wildlife viewing areas" that connect to the broader trail system.

Swimming beaches: Public swimming areas are available at several parks, with Clinton Lake standing out for its unusual water temperature. "Clinton Lake is a boating destination as the waters are unusually warm due to the discharge from the nearby nuclear plant," reports Stacia R. The beach generally operates between Memorial Day and Labor Day with some charging a small entry fee.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Friends Creek Campground receives consistent praise for its well-spaced campsites. "This hidden gem of a campground is very quiet and serene - surrounded by tall trees and next to a tall grass prairie conservation area," writes Kate O. Another camper adds, "The sites are spacious, they just put in electric this year which is nice, water available but not per site."

Clean facilities: Campers frequently mention the well-maintained shower houses and restrooms at Lithia Springs. "The shower house is very nice, clean and private. You can see the lake from the campground and the marina is only a short distance away," notes Emily P. Another visitor writes, "Campground well maintained and bathrooms/showers are kept clean. Easy access to lake."

Quiet setting: For those seeking peaceful camping, several campgrounds offer less crowded options. "This campground is quiet and in a nice wooded area but still only 5-10 minutes from nearby shopping and attractions in Springfield," shares Sean H. about Springfield KOA. Visitors appreciate the secluded feel while maintaining proximity to conveniences.

What you should know

Seasonal availability: Most campgrounds in the area have limited operating seasons. "This state park felt like it was dropped into the middle of cornfields and made for a fun drive," describes Susan L., who advises checking opening dates before planning trips.

Reservation requirements: Popular waterfront sites fill quickly, especially during summer weekends. "If you want a lake spot, make a reservation way in advance," advises Rhonda W. about Lone Point. Some parks offer first-come, first-served options, but these are limited.

Utility hookups: Electric service varies significantly between campgrounds and even within the same park. "Electric only but still love. Spaced out, gravel sites and asphalt roads," explains Kaitlin D. about Sangchris Lake. While some sites offer full hookups, many provide only 30-amp electric service with communal water access points.

Weather considerations: Summer thunderstorms can create muddy conditions. "The sites get muddy after a rain," warns Keith D. Many campgrounds have gravel pads for RVs, but tent campers should prepare for potential drainage issues during wet weather.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Robin Hood Woods Campground & Cottage Resort offers family-friendly amenities beyond standard camping. "Wonderful pirate ship playground. Weekend activities for the kids," shares Janelle H. The resort also features "a pool, playground, fishing pond and small arcade room," making it suitable for families with various interests.

Swimming options: Families appreciate the dedicated swimming areas at several parks. "Really nice campground on Clinton Lake. Has a really nice beach for swimming and picnics," reports Brandon E. Most beaches operate during daytime hours only, typically 10am-7pm.

Hiking for kids: Several parks offer shorter trails suitable for young hikers. "Start at the one room schoolhouse and make your way down wide trails. They aren't that long but take a few and they add up," advises Aaron B. about the conservation area at Friends Creek Campground.

Bug preparation: Insects can be problematic, especially in evenings near water. "Our biggest issue with this campsite was the extensive bugs, once the sun goes down the bugs get horribly bad," warns Austin-Tarra G. Families should pack appropriate repellents and consider timing outdoor activities accordingly.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Most campgrounds offer a mix of shaded and open sites with varying privacy levels. "Luck of the draw on being level and having shade," notes Shelly S. about camping at Lithia Springs. RVers recommend researching specific loops or calling ahead for recommendations based on rig size.

Hookup limitations: Water access points may require long hoses at some campgrounds. "The water faucets for fill up can be a bit far away," cautions Nathaniel K. about camping at Wolf Creek. RVers should prepare with extension cords and extra-long water hoses.

Dump station access: While some sites offer full hookups, many rely on centralized dump stations. "Since the dump station was also in this line, we couldn't dump," warns Cynthia K. about occasional maintenance issues. RVers should plan to arrive with empty holding tanks when possible.

Seasonal rental options: For those interested in upscale glamping in Blue Mound, Illinois without bringing their own equipment, several resorts offer cottage rentals with modern amenities. "We stayed in the rental cabins, but are in the waiting list for a seasonal site," shares a visitor at Robin Hood Woods, highlighting the popularity of these premium accommodations.
