      Twin Falls County Fairgrounds

Cheap, cheap and cheap. Did I mention cheap?

Because we'd usually rather be boondocking, we're all about cheap when we actually have to pay for a campsite. And if we're actually going to have to pay, we want the whole shebang -- 50A electric, water and sewer hookups -- because why pay for what we otherwise get for free? The Twin Falls County Fairgrounds delivers on both counts.

The RV Park is located on the east side of the fairgrounds and has 80 spaces with full hook-ups (water, sewer & 50 amp power); and 100 hook-up with (water & 30 amp power). Spaces with amenities cost $21.20, tax included per night, or $106 for a week (buy 5 nights/get 2 free). Dry camping with no amenities is available for $10.60, tax included per night. Maximum stay is 2 weeks. No reservations, everything is first-come, first-served.

Sites are located on grass, with dirt roads throughout the campground. Hookups for water, electric and sewer are located behind your RV. While the site itself is level, that makes it uphill for the sewer run so we wish that they had chosen a more traditional layout. Still, for this price I'm not complaining. Also, if the place actually filled up these sites would be crazy tight; however, during our visit July 2021 they're not even close to 50% capacity, so folks are leaving at least one site between themselves and their neighbors.

Cell signal strength and data speeds are solid on both Verizon and AT&T. We've been both working and streaming with no issues whatsoever.

There's a separate dump station on site with potable water. The bathrooms are individual units with showers, and are immaculate. If you arrive after hours you have to call the after-hours number on the sign, and James will come out and determine your site and collect your money (cash or check only). The campground occasionally closes for events held at the Fairgrounds, and in 2021 that's for two events. Check their website for details. There was a lot of activity during our stay including equestrian events and even a monster truck rally, so there's lots to keep you entertained while you're in the campground and not out exploring the Twin Falls area.

Filer is a tiny ranching community just west of Twin Falls. Campers will find the surprisingly complete M&W Market just down the street, along with a True Value Hardware. And all of the chains and big box stores are nearby in Twin Falls, only 7 miles away.

No livestock are allowed in RV area, but boarding is available in stables adjacent to the campground for $10 inside/$5 outside. Dogs are not allowed to roam freely and must be under supervision of their owner, either on a leash or kennel.

So when everything else was booked solid in July 2021, we found dirt cheap FHU sites aplenty at the Twin Falls County Fairgrounds!

Snake River Canyons Park - Rickett's RV Camp

      Impressive

This is a full blown campground! No hook ups, trash, or such, but it does have pit toilets. It is very well maintained with designated large gravel spots and a large circle over flow lot. We are in the over flow and it is perfect (except a little horse smell since it is bt horse corals). This is one of the best free camp spots I have found. It fills up by evening so get here before 5 is my recommendation. It is patrolled by security/ police and it looked like they were taking license plate numbers last night to make sure no one stays longer than the 5 days max.

Snake River Canyons Park - Rickett's RV Camp

Conveient overnight stay with minimal fuss, bathrooms and good sized spots

Snake River Canyons Park- Rickett's RV Camp offers a peaceful and convenient location for an overnight stay. The campsites are mostly clean and equipped with fire rings and picnic tables. While the area is quite dry, it provides a safe and hassle-free experience. Nothing fancy. The Sherrif did a drive through at dusk(a feature I like) and the camp filled up before the sun had set. The availability of basic amenities such as pit toilets and horse corrals adds to the convenience of the site. If you're looking for a quick overnight stay this is a great spot that is pretty much a free campsite complete with a site host.

Snake River Canyons Park - Rickett's RV Camp

      Nice overnight spot

Nice campground with 13 campsites with fire rings and picnic tables. There is also 2 pit toilets. Only stayed one night on our way to Oregon. There is a 5 night limit. Would stay here again if in the area. About 5 empty spots when we pulled in on a Sunday evening. There is also 3 horse corrals if looking for a place to ride.

    What to do

Trail riding opportunities: The area surrounding Snake River Canyons Park - Rickett's RV Camp offers extensive trail access for horseback riding, ATV use, and mountain biking. "There are several designated back in and a couple of pull-through campsites with picnic tables and fire pits and two Vault toilets as well as well as garbage receptacles. Seems very safe and clean and sites are clearly numbered," notes Steve M. The grounds connect directly to multiple trail systems that wind through the impressive canyon landscapes.

Explore nearby attractions: From Murtaugh Lake Park Campground, visitors can access water recreation opportunities approximately 25 minutes from Richfield. "The campground was quiet and clean, many sites right on the lake. There is not much privacy, but there weren't many people there when we were so it was nice," reports Caitlyn R. The lake offers fishing and boating options during warmer months.

Visit Shoshone Falls: Often called the "Niagara of the West," Shoshone Falls is approximately 35 minutes from Richfield. "10 minute drive to Shoshone Falls which is beautiful this time of year," notes Jessica K. from her stay at Oregon Trail Campground. The falls reach 212 feet high and are most impressive during spring runoff.

    What campers like

Easy access to supplies: Twin Falls County Fairgrounds offers a convenient base camp about 20 miles from Richfield with full hookup options. "Filer is a tiny ranching community just west of Twin Falls. Campers will find the surprisingly complete M&W Market just down the street, along with a True Value Hardware. And all of the chains and big box stores are nearby in Twin Falls, only 7 miles away," reports Marc G.

Budget-friendly options: Many campgrounds in the area provide affordable options for equestrian camping near Richfield. "Nice and quiet. $21.20 dry and I think $40 full. Nice big grass areas with a few trees. Probably really hot in summer but we were there in fall," notes Julia B. about Twin Falls County Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds also offers horse boarding facilities adjacent to the campground.

Clean facilities: Multiple campgrounds maintain well-kept amenities despite remote locations. "The vault toilet area was actually very clean and not stinky. Full toilet paper rolls," writes Tuyen V. about Murtaugh Lake Park. Similarly, at Ricketts RV Camp, "Clean vault toilets. No water. Security checks nightly," reports Anne E., highlighting the regular maintenance that occurs despite the free camping.

    What you should know

Limited shade coverage: Most campgrounds in the Richfield area feature open landscapes with minimal natural shade. "No trees, so little privacy," notes Kendra T. about Ricketts RV Camp. Summer temperatures regularly reach into the 90s, so prepare with additional shade structures or select sites carefully if visiting during peak summer months.

Stay limits enforced: Many free camping areas enforce specific stay durations. "Rickets has several pull-in (not through) RV campsites that are gravel driveways with a table and fire pit. There is OHV/Equestrian areas all around. Each night an officer from Twin Falls will verify license plates but the campground is free with a 5 night maximum stay," explains Cory S.

Water availability varies: Most dispersed camping and some established campgrounds lack reliable water sources. "This campground has toilets but no water or electricity. The toilets are clean. It's better to arrive early because it's really popular," advises Mengxuan W. about Ricketts RV Camp. Bring sufficient water supplies, especially when traveling with horses.

    Tips for camping with families

Reserve early for lake access: Jerome County Fairgrounds provides an affordable base for families approximately 25 minutes from Richfield. "Clean and quiet. All paved. Water and electrical hook ups. Pull through spots. Such a great place to stop and a killer sunset from the bleachers," shares Tara B. The paved surfaces make it suitable for bikes and scooters.

Bring entertainment: Most campgrounds near Richfield offer limited on-site activities for children. "If you are looking for peace and quiet and clean this is the place. None of the fancy amenities, but impeccably kept grounds. My dog loved the grass, he was rolling in it and running through sprinklers on hot evening," shares Deborah M. about Jerome County Fairgrounds. Pack games, bikes, and other entertainment.

Consider weather timing: The area experiences significant temperature fluctuations. "Showed up late October around 6. It's quiet, just out of town and there are toilets placed I guess (didn't use) and a fire pit by my site. Didn't use either. Cold (34° last night) rainy, super windy, but felt safe and free is great," reports Brooke C. Spring and fall offer milder temperatures but can bring unpredictable conditions.

    Tips from RVers

Arrive early at popular sites: Free equestrian camping areas fill quickly, particularly on weekends. "It's better to arrive early because it's really popular. Surprisingly, I could still get a 5G signal from the campsite," notes Mengxuan W. about Ricketts RV Camp. Mid-week arrivals improve your chances at securing preferred spots.

Level sites available: Many campgrounds in the area provide relatively level parking for RVs. "Each space has a picnic table and fire ring, and there are drop toilets and trash bins. All the sites look pretty level. Easy to find off the highway," reports Kendra T.

Consider fairgrounds for full hookups: Oregon Trail Campground and Twin Falls County Fairgrounds both offer full hookup options within 30 minutes of Richfield. "The RV Park is located on the east side of the fairgrounds and has 80 spaces with full hook-ups (water, sewer & 50 amp power); and 100 hook-up with (water & 30 amp power)," explains Marc G. about the fairgrounds. These established campgrounds provide more comfortable options for extended stays.
