Grand View Campground (Targhee NF)

With only eight well-spaced sites and electric hookups at each one, Grand View Campground runs a tight operation along the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway in Targhee National Forest. Reservations are available and recommended, with nightly rates running $31 to $62. The campground is open May through September and can accommodate RVs up to 65 feet. Cell service is essentially nonexistent here, a detail worth planning around before arrival.

The facilities consistently draw positive comments from visitors. Vault toilets are kept notably clean, drinking water is available via spigots near the sites, and a camp host lives on-site and actively maintains the grounds. Sites include picnic tables and fire rings, and firewood is available. Two of the sites are double sites, which gives groups more options. Campers report the campground stays quiet, with only occasional road noise from the byway.

Lower Mesa Falls is within easy walking distance from the nearest site, and Upper Mesa Falls is a short drive up the road. The Bear Gulch trail is also in the area, though reviewers note it sees mountain bike and dirt bike traffic, so foot travelers should expect company on that route. Randy M. sums up the facilities well: "The vault toilets are very clean, smell great, have hand sanitizer." Holders of an America the Beautiful pass will see significantly reduced nightly rates. Campers who want more options in the region can browse campgrounds near Targhee National Forest, or consider Warm River as a nearby alternative a few miles to the south.

This intimate 9-site campground consistently impressed guests with its cleanliness and rare electric hookups for a National Forest location. Campers regularly cited the peaceful atmosphere and proximity to Mesa Falls, with only minor road noise mentioned by some visitors.

Idaho at it's finest

We used this campground as our launching sight for Yellowstone. Even though it was about a 45 minute drive to the West Yellowstone entrance, we were so happy we stayed here instead of close to the park. We booked double site 007 since we were not sure if we would fit our fifth wheel and truck in the single site. We were glad we did. One other large fifth wheel was in a single site and it was a very tight squeeze. We had electric at our site and water close by. Even though you can't hook up to the water, with a long hose, we could refill as needed without moving. This campground has only 8 spots. They could have fit more, but you will love that they didn't. You have so much privacy and are surrounded by a beautiful Idaho forest. There is absolutely no cell service here. We got one hit on our phones on one of the trails. You can do satellite text messaging, but that is about all. However, with Mother Nature at her finest, you will enjoy being disconnected. The campground hosts were friendly and informative of the area. You can walk the trails to the Lower Mesa Falls, but be sure to take the effort and drive to the Upper Mesa Falls. There is another backcountry entrance to Yellowstone to Cave Falls. It is on a well groomed dirt road and worth the effort. After the drive on the dirt road, there is a self serve car wash in Ashton that was badly needed. There is not a dump station at the campground. However, going north towards Yellowstone on US 20 is a forest dump station. It is on the west side of US 20 near mile marker 382. There wasn't a sign going north, but we saw the sign coming south on the way back from Yellowstone. It is 16 miles from the campground. I don't know of any dump station options if you are heading south from the campground.  There is so much to see and do in this area, we can't wait to come back.

Small, quiet spot with power and waterfalls

We chose this small campground to shelter from the nuttiness of the July 4th holiday weekend. There are only 8 well spaced sites total in the campground and one of those is occupied by the hosts, who take extremely good care of the facilities. The vault toilets are very clean, smell great, have hand sanitizer, and actually have rugs to make them feel more like a real bathroom. There are drinking water spigots; but no water or sewer at the sites. Mesa Falls is within easy walking distance and there are two rails-to-trails within an easy ride. The campground is quiet, easy to navigate, and has power at each site. Great place to stay.

Hidden Gem!

I’ve lived in Idaho Falls almost my whole life and visited Ashton and Island Park countless times and had no idea this was here! I lucked into a first come spot because someone had cancelled their online reservation and was able to stay two nights here. Dog friendly, zero cell service like at all.

I got spot 4, right next to the delightful camp hosts! Electricity at each camp site, two double sites, all the trees you could ever want! A very very quiet and peaceful campground. 10/10. Will be back.

It’s steps away from Lower Mesa Falls! Not far from Ashton if you forget something and close enough to West Yellowstone if you want to stay somewhere further from the park!

Nice Campground with Fantastic Host!

There's so much to see in the area. Obviously the nearby falls, but also other great opportunities not too far of a drive such as Cave Falls.  The campground itself has a hiking and vista opportunities. It was very well maintained and peaceful. We got unlucky with a flat tire out and our host was incredibly helpful to get us to the only place nearby (not nearby) to get that replaced. Above and beyond, and made an unfortunate situation much more tolerable.

Great but buggy

Gorgeous and quiet camp spot despite being off the scenic byway. You can easily walk down to the Lower Mesa Falls observation point from the campground, and Upper Falls are a 5 minute drive. Apply big spray often and enjoy this campground!

What a surprise!

What a surprise. Small, intimate, but generous sites. We don't often find NF campgrounds with electricity. Only 9 sites, but all with electric. There is a spicket for fresh water. Super clean. A little road noise, but not too bad. As with all national sites, the America the Beautiful Senior pass makes it only $13 per night. What a deal. Extra vehicles are charged a $7 fee. Also, as others have said. Upper Mesa Falls is worth a visit. We went around noon and the falls produced a rainbow. Beautiful ! See photos for pictures of all sitesm

Hike to waterfalls

The campground is within walking distance of Lower Mesa Falls and an easy but longer hike to Upper Mesa Falls. All the usual amenities in this campground- picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets(really clean!), plus steel prep stand tables. No cell service for me here, but I think some other campers had service with a different carrier. Definitely do the hike to the falls to save yourself a parking fee($5), or be sure to take your Interagency National Parks card and the parking fee will be waived. Not far away is the Bear Gulch hike, which is very pretty, but you will likely have to share the trail with mountain bikers and dirt bikers, so be prepared.

Small but grand

This little campground, only 9 sites, is very well kept and in a wonderful location. The Tetons are about an hour away and West Yellowstone is about the same distance. Not to mention Lower Mesa Falls is only 100 or so yards from the closest campsite. Upper Mesa Falls is just up the road as well making this a great jumping off point for almost any adventure. In regards to the actual campground, there are sites with electrical hookups and spots large enough to fit two RVs. There is also fire pits, tables, water, restrooms, and even bug traps. Since the site is so small there is also not much noise except for a car driving by every now and then. Overall, a wonderful place to stay.

Small Idaho gem near the Tetons

This campground and the adjacent Falls were recommended to me by a local, and what a find! The campground was very small(9 sites, I think), quiet, and beautiful. The outhouse and campsites were extremely clean. All sites had electric hookup available; camping fees were $30 with hookup and $15 without. The campground is located on Mesa Falls Scenic Byway, near Ashton, Idaho, and is a short walk to The lower Falls. I will definitely return to camp at this tiny gem.
