Hamburg State Park Campground sits along the shore of a mill pond in rural Washington County, Georgia, roughly five miles from campgrounds near Mitchell and well removed from interstate corridors, rail lines, and airports. The campground runs 30 sites, and the layout is worth knowing before you book: sites 1 and 2 are primitive with no water views, site 3 has a partial view but no direct water access, and sites 4 through 30 all back directly onto Hamburg Lake. Sites 1 through 20 face east for morning sun, while sites 21 through 30 face west and catch afternoon light and sunset views over the water.
The atmosphere here skews quiet. As Denise notes, "even when full, the campground was pretty quiet," and that observation holds across multiple visits from different reviewers. Trees shade most sites well. Cell coverage is essentially nonexistent on the campsite loop, with no AT&T signal and at most one bar of Verizon reported. The park office has WiFi, but campers who need reliable connectivity will need to drive there. That disconnection is part of what draws repeat visitors.
Fishing and paddling are the main draws on the water. Kayaks, canoes, and paddle boats are available to rent, and the mill pond is sized well for a few hours of paddling rather than motorized boating. Swimming is not permitted due to alligators. On land, three trails connect the campground to the historic grist mill and museum on-site, including a red trail and a walking path to the mill. The trails are modest in length and elevation, suited to a casual walk rather than a strenuous hike.
Hookups include electric (30-amp at some sites), water, and sewer, and the campground accommodates RVs up to 80 feet. A newer bathhouse replaced the older facility and receives consistent marks for cleanliness. One bathhouse serves all 30 sites, and the walk from some sites is a fair distance, particularly after dark. Firewood is available from the camp host. The season runs March 15 through November 30, with rates between $32 and $36 per night. Reservations are accepted and recommended for weekends, when the campground fills. Nearby alternatives include Warthen RV Park and Wiley Roost RV Park to the southeast if Hamburg is fully booked.
Campers who want a site directly on the water with room for a kayak or canoe pulled up behind the pad will find Hamburg well-matched to that goal.
Description
With modern day facilities amidst reminders of days gone by, Hamburg State Park offers a wonderful mix of history and outdoor recreation. The campground offers shaded sites along the edge of quiet Hamburg Lake fed by the Little Ogeechee River. The campground provides hot showers, water hookups, electric hookups, and a dump station. Anglers can enjoy fishing for largemouth bass, crappie and bream, as well as a boat ramp and a fishing pier. Wildlife enthusiasts should look for turtles, alligators, raccoons, deer, birds and numerous other animals that live within the park. The restored 1921 water-powered gristmill is still operational and is used to grind corn during events.
