Ochopee sits within Florida's western Everglades ecosystem, where freshwater marshes, cypress stands, and sawgrass prairies create a unique camping environment at just 3-5 feet above sea level. The area experiences two distinct seasons: a dry winter with temperatures averaging 50-75°F and a wet summer season from June through November when afternoon thunderstorms are common and temperatures regularly exceed 90°F.
What to do
Wildlife viewing: Deer spotting at Horseshoe Primitive Campground offers exceptional opportunities as they frequently roam through the camping areas. A camper noted, "We stayed in a campervan and upon arrival saw 4 campsites packed together and the entire field was open which had many other campsites... it was a great stay for 4 days with deer roaming the campground."
Stargazing: Night sky observation at Trail Lakes Campground provides impressive views due to minimal light pollution. "There are no towns close by so the light pollution is low," reports one visitor, while another observed, "It was a full moon the night we stayed and the stars were still incredibly bright as there is very little light pollution."
Historic exploration: Settlement tours at Koreshan State Park Campground offer insights into an unusual 1900s community. "This park also has a walking tour of the Korshean Settlement which was interesting," shares one camper. Another visitor mentioned, "The buildings are pretty interesting, as is the beliefs these unusual folks held. History is, well…history…sometimes fact is stranger than fiction."
What campers like
Privacy among sites: Many Ochopee area glamping accommodations offer natural separation. At Koreshan State Park, "There is plenty of scrub between you and your neighbor…you may hear them, but you won't see them."
Water access for paddling: The Estero River at Koreshan provides excellent kayaking opportunities. "The big draw…the Estero River. Though built up on the north side with a trailer park…parts of the Estero feel remote and jungle-like," reports one camper. Another notes you can "drop your boat in at the park, or rent one. Fishing is fantastic…and the aquatic wildlife is amazing!"
Animal encounters: Horseshoe Primitive Campground offers opportunities to spot diverse wildlife. "Keep your eyes peeled for a panther sighting!" suggests one visitor. A camp ranger noted that "a panther, the night before my arrival, was chasing some deer about 300 yards west of the campgrounds."
What you should know
Weather preparation: Summer camping near Ochopee requires planning for rain. "From mid-May to mid-November, you are likely to experience some heavy downpours each afternoon," warns one experienced camper at Horseshoe Primitive Campground.
Insect awareness: Mosquitoes are present year-round but vary seasonally. "We are in November now and the weather is in the 70s during the day and 60s at night so the mosquitoes are not bad, but they are still present. Having a bottle of bug spray and maybe a fogger will do just fine in this weather," advises a Trail Lakes Campground visitor.
Primitive conditions: Many sites lack basic amenities. At Endless Summer RV Park, expect "small no frills" accommodations according to a camper who described it as "great for the price. Beautiful area all around but nothing fancy."
