Coldwater Equestrian Campground — Blackwater River State Forest

Perfect secluded equestrian camp with horse stable and trails.

This beautiful equestrian campground offers 55 RV/tent campsites and one tent only site and 60 horse stalls. All campsites have water and electrical hookups. There is a dump station, restrooms, showers, and a dining facility available by reservation. Cold Water Creek runs along the north edge of the campgrounds with easy access from the camp sites. A very beautiful area. Only complaint is the the campsites are right next to each other with no screening between sites.

Coldwater Equestrian Campground — Blackwater River State Forest

      Peace and quiet on Coldwater

Most of the sites from #16 to #56 are shaded, some more than others. All the sites are not the same size, some being larger than the others. Very friendly staff especially the Rangers. Faye (one of the rangers) is great. We had our 3 year old granddaughter with us and she came by at least twice a day to give her a ride on the golf cart and printed of pages she could color on rainy days. She didn’t discriminate either..all the children at the campground got to take a ride. Lots of trails to ride your horses. A lot of the campsites are right on the water. You even have a private huge sandbar for campers only. The showers and bathrooms were always clean and nice. Even though we didn’t use it, there’s a large community center on site to use. We stayed on site #56 and it was right on the water. It was also next to the road. The site was extra super sandy (beach sand) and would be a lot better if they removed some of it. All the other campers were super friendly. We will be back.

      Great for free

Beautiful views, clean restrooms, and free. Other campers were very friendly. The only reason for a 3 is the rough drive getting there.

      Wilderness Landing

      Nice little campground.

It's not on the big side of campgrounds but still has some of the amenities. No hookups at the campsites but there is running water (hot and cold) in the bath house with flushing toilets. Power outlets in the bath house as well. It is located right on the Blackwater River and has a boat launch and two pavilions with tables and barbeque grills right on the beach. The river is sand bottom and fairly clear. My big ol' malamute "Stealie" loves the river! The best part is it's FREE! For up to 14 days.

    Guide to Navarre Beach

Wilderness Landing offers primitive equestrian camping along the Blackwater River in Florida, about 45 minutes north of Navarre Beach. This free campground allows stays up to 14 days with access to the river's sandy shoreline. The weather in this area ranges from hot, humid summers with afternoon thunderstorms to mild winters that rarely drop below freezing, creating year-round camping opportunities for equestrians and other outdoor enthusiasts.

    What to do

Trail riding opportunities: The expansive trail system throughout Blackwater River State Forest provides varied terrain for equestrians. Wilderness Landing serves as an excellent base camp for accessing these trails. "Beautiful views, clean restrooms, and free. Other campers were very friendly. The only reason for a 3 is the rough drive getting there," notes Donna G. about Wilderness Landing.

Riverfront relaxation: Cool off in the Blackwater River after a day of riding or hiking. The clear, sandy-bottomed river is ideal for swimming. "It is located right on the Blackwater River and has a boat launch and two pavilions with tables and barbeque grills right on the beach. The river is sand bottom and fairly clear," writes Stealie F.

Wildlife observation: The secluded forest setting attracts abundant wildlife, particularly at dawn and dusk. "Grass sites, some shade," reports Ken R. about Wilderness Landing's natural setting that supports deer and various bird species.

    What campers like

Privacy and seclusion: The remote location of horse campgrounds near Navarre Beach provides a peaceful retreat. "Want to be away from it all - this is the place," says Ken R. about Peaceful Camping in the Woods, where campers appreciate the quiet forest setting.

Friendly atmosphere: Rangers and fellow campers create a welcoming community. "Very friendly staff especially the Rangers. Faye (one of the rangers) is great. We had our 3 year old granddaughter with us and she came by at least twice a day to give her a ride on the golf cart and printed of pages she could color on rainy days," shares Jennifer P.

Well-maintained facilities: Despite their rustic nature, many sites are regularly cleaned and cared for. "Good spot for free. Clean showers/toilet building. Pavilions and grills by the river," reports Salvador G. about the facilities at Wilderness Landing.

    What you should know

Limited connectivity: Cell service can be unreliable in Blackwater River State Forest. "Cell service was on the struggle bus the whole time, but overall this is a great little place," explains Terran B. about Coldwater Equestrian Campground.

Access challenges: Some horse campgrounds require traveling on unpaved forest roads. Donna G. notes the "rough drive getting there" as the only drawback to Wilderness Landing.

Varying site sizes: Campsite dimensions differ significantly between and within campgrounds. "All the sites are not the same size, some being larger than the others," Jennifer P. points out about Coldwater's layout.

Sand management: Some sites have excessive sand that requires preparation. "The site was extra super sandy (beach sand) and would be a lot better if they removed some of it," mentions Jennifer P.

    Tips for camping with families

Ranger interactions: Children often enjoy special attention from forest rangers. "She didn't discriminate either..all the children at the campground got to take a ride," shares Jennifer P. about ranger Faye at Anchors Aweigh RV Resort, highlighting activities for younger visitors.

River safety planning: The Blackwater River provides recreation but requires supervision. Pack life jackets for children and establish clear boundaries near water areas.

Weather preparedness: Summer thunderstorms develop quickly in this region. Bring rainy day activities, as one ranger thoughtfully "printed of pages she could color on rainy days" for a young camper.

    Tips from RVers

Level site selection: Choose sites carefully based on your rig's requirements. "Parked in a clearing with 2 5th wheel renters on it...walked back into the woods along a trail and chose one of several camp clearings. Level ground, dry, lots of deer," recommends Christopher M. at Hidden Lake Resort.

Hookup availability: RV services vary significantly between equestrian campgrounds near Navarre Beach. While Coldwater offers water and electrical hookups with a dump station, Wilderness Landing is completely primitive without hookups.

Size restrictions: Not all horse campgrounds accommodate larger rigs. "Small friendly very clean park. All paved and pets welcome," notes John G., emphasizing the importance of confirming your vehicle can navigate the access roads and fit in available sites.
