What to do
Stargazing at designated dark sky sites: Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park offers exceptional night sky viewing as Florida's only certified dark sky park. "Astronomers love this park. In fact, they have a designated campground just for them. Be sure to ONLY use flashlights with red lense so that you do not disrupt the star gazers," notes camper Annell N.
Wildlife viewing from horseback trails: Multiple trails showcase native Florida species in their natural habitat. "The animals just weren't afraid of humans. Our 6 teenagers were so excited to stand face-to-face, only a few feet from gentle deer, bunnies, and turkeys. We even saw some lazy baby alligators sunning on the Military Trail," shares Roxxy G. at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park.
Weekend rodeo entertainment: Saturday night rodeos provide authentic western experiences for families. "The boys loved the rodeo that was held on the weekend. They even got to participate in chasing the calf to win a prize," reports Christy C. who visited Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo.
What campers like
Private, spacious sites: The camping areas prioritize space between neighbors. "Campsites are far enough apart for privacy with lots of shades trees. Each site has a firepit," says Stephanie G. about Lake Kissimmee State Park Campground.
Clean facilities despite remote locations: The maintenance of bathhouses stands out to visitors. "Bathrooms are spacious. Showers are hot," confirms Roxxy G. Another camper, Richard P., adds, "Clean bathrooms. Hot showers."
Wildlife encounters around campsites: Animals frequently visit camping areas. "Wild turkeys visited us daily to hang out by a fallen tree near our site. Deer passed by every evening," shares Barbara J. about Lake Kissimmee State Park Campground.
What you should know
Remote locations require planning: Most equestrian campgrounds sit far from services. "Expect a long travel to this remote site. It's a couple miles of reasonably decent dirt roads to get there, after several miles of remote highways," explains David G. Similarly, Monte W. advises, "Definitely bring everything that you need because there is nothing around for many miles."
Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly. "Cell service is practically non existent in the park and within 10 miles from the park. Keep an eye on gas, there's one place about 6 miles from the park and town is about 15 miles away," reports Corey K.
Road conditions vary seasonally: Access roads to many equestrian sites require attention. "Washboard road for miles to get to the hammock, and it was in bad shape," notes Lauren W. about her experience at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Activity planning for multiple age groups: Horse-friendly campgrounds offer diverse entertainment options. "We went on an airboat ride. It was great. We really enjoyed the rodeo," says Susan K. about her family's stay at Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo.
