Camping cabins near Florida City provide convenient access to both Everglades National Park and the Florida Keys. Located at the southern tip of mainland Florida, the area experiences a subtropical climate with summer highs regularly exceeding 90°F and winter lows rarely dropping below 50°F. Winter months (December through April) see significantly lower humidity and rainfall compared to the wet summer season.
What to do
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Flamingo Campground offers excellent access to Everglades wildlife. "We enjoyed our visit and got to see a lot of the famous wildlife," notes Rob Y. Bird watchers particularly appreciate the variety of species visible right from campsites. "If you're looking for birds, nearby Eco pond or the waterfront near the bayside campsites offer a nice variety for minimal effort," adds Jean C.
Water activities: John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park provides multiple water-based recreation options. One visitor explains, "We biked to nearly everything including nearby restaurants, we hung at the beach, kayaked and did trail walks with the dog." The park features canoe rentals, fishing spots, and snorkeling opportunities. "I highly recommend the snorkeling experience offered out of the visitors center. We had an incredible guide and captain," reports Matt M.
Bicycling trails: Larry & Penny Thompson Park features extensive biking paths. "There is a walking/Biking path around the campground perimeter which is actively used," notes Laurie H. The park's relatively flat terrain makes it suitable for riders of all skill levels, and some sections offer shade from the intense Florida sun.
What campers like
Proximity to attractions: Kings Kamp provides convenient access to both natural areas and urban amenities. "Kings Kamp is a unique property that will work for all visitors... Very close to John Pennekamp and everything else in Key Largo," writes Amanda K. The central location allows visitors to explore multiple destinations. "Great location to most of the Florida Keys," adds another camper about nearby accommodations.
Waterfront views: Encore Fiesta Key offers premium cabin sites with water views. "We paid premium price for a water front spot. We recommend when visiting you get a waterfront spot for sunset," suggests Glenn F. Waterfront accommodations provide both scenic value and cooling breezes. "We enjoyed sleeping with our door open hearing the waves. Beautiful sunsets," shares Michele W.
Cabin amenities: Several cabin options include more comforts than traditional camping. "We have a toddler and each time she loved the pool & beach area," mentions Kirsten J. about Fiesta Key's cabins. While Larry & Penny Thompson Park cabins are more basic, they provide essential shelter with nearby amenities: "Great bathhouse. Clean... zoo. beach/waterslide," notes Benjamin C.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Winter brings large crowds to Florida City area campgrounds. "Reservations are essential during winter months when seasonal residents occupy many sites," notes one camper. This impacts availability from December through April. "Tenters can stay for a Max of 7 nights while RV's can stay for 180. Tenters can only pay for 3 nights at once before returning to re-up," explains Tod H. at Larry & Penny Thompson Park.
Bug protection: Insect repellent is essential year-round but critical in warmer months. "Take the bug seriously. Even in late January the mosquitoes are vicious. You'll want insect repellent long sleeve long pants and maybe even a mosquito net when you are out and about," warns Jean C. about Flamingo Campground. Some campers recommend additional protection: "Only complaint was the no see ums - make sure you bring a thermacell bc they are no joke!" advises Maria E.
Site privacy: Southern Comfort RV Resort and similar properties typically feature open sites with minimal separation. "The sites are tight. There's a really nice pool miniature golf in a walking trail around the entire perimeter," explains Butch S. about a nearby resort. At Larry & Penny Thompson Park, "The tent area is off to one side and well shaded by mature trees. It's an area rather than sites. You pick your spot, put up a tent and place a large numbered sign by your area."
Tips for camping with families
Water safety measures: Families should monitor children near water at all times. "We have a toddler and each time she loved the pool & beach area," shares Kirsten J., but supervision remains essential. Life jackets are recommended for young children, even at properties with guarded swimming areas.
Entertainment options: The Boardwalk RV And Mobile Home Resort and similar properties offer family-friendly amenities. "The lots are huge and clean," notes Derick B. Many campgrounds feature recreational facilities including swimming pools, playground equipment, and organized activities during peak season.
Food storage solutions: Protect food from wildlife and insects, particularly at more remote campgrounds. "You'll be conscious of the sound the zipper makes when you leave and return to your tent... No food is allowed in the tents. There are no lights around the picnic tables so if you are cooking after dark, be sure you've planned for that," explains Portia H. about camping at Flamingo.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategies: Choose cabin sites based on specific needs rather than just availability. "Our site #27 was perfect for our little Rv. The camp was clean and it had plenty to keep us busy," shares Lilian about John Pennekamp. Consider sun exposure, proximity to bathhouses, and potential noise sources when selecting a site.
Utility considerations: Water quality varies significantly between properties. "In the ladies room was working... For the price, a decent bathroom would be anticipated," notes Portia H. about facility maintenance at one location. Some properties also experience occasional service interruptions: "Our last night the water went out and all bathrooms in all loops were closed... communication was horrible," reports Paul Y.
Reservation timing: Book well in advance for winter stays in Florida City area cabins. "Finally able to book as a FL resident 11 months in advance and secured a site," explains Rick G. about John Pennekamp. For more flexibility, consider visiting during shoulder seasons (November or May) when temperatures remain comfortable but competition for sites decreases.
