Near the western slope of the Continental Divide, Oak Creek camping areas sit at elevations between 6,800-8,000 feet. Summer temperatures typically range from 45-80°F with afternoon thunderstorms common in July and August. The region's yurt accommodations provide shelter from frequent mountain winds that can reach 30+ mph during weather transitions.
What to do
Hot springs soaking: Strawberry Park Hot Springs offers natural mineral pools ranging from 101-106°F. The facility provides changing rooms and massage services by appointment. "The setting is idyllic with mature trees and the beautiful Yampa river running through it," notes a visitor. Access requires high-clearance vehicles during winter months.
Fishing access: Bear River Designated Dispersed provides proximity to multiple fishing spots. Sites cost $10-20 per night and are first-come, first-served. "Bring lots of layers and warm clothes as summer temps at night and in the mornings at this elevation throughout the summer are very chilly around 35 degrees Fahrenheit," advises Blue B.
Hiking nearby: Steamboat Lake State Park connects to numerous trail networks. "We had a fantastic time at Steamboat Lake! Our family of 4 (5 year old & 9 year old) enjoyed the location, amenities, and nearby trails," says one camper. Trails range from 1-5 miles with moderate elevation gain.
What campers like
Waterfront sites: "Cow Creek South has plenty of space between camp sites. View was amazing water was perfect (but super low) camp host was great. We had three cars, a camper and a tent and it didn't feel cramped at all," shares Kelsey C.
Yurt options: Pearl Lake State Park features year-round yurt camping near Oak Creek with electric hookups. "Half of the upper loop sites have a lake and mountain view. Plenty space between sites for privacy too," notes Garret M. The yurts require advance reservations, especially during summer months.
Site privacy: "The tent sites are across the river and so peaceful," reports Shannon G. about the Steamboat Springs KOA. Many campers appreciate the separation from the more developed areas of the campground.
What you should know
Water levels vary: "Over the past several years, the boat launch has not been usable due to extreme low reservoir water levels. So bring a canoe instead maybe!" mentions Blue B. about Bear River camping areas. Check current conditions before planning water activities.
Temperature swings: Mountain elevations around Oak Creek cause 30-40 degree temperature fluctuations between day and night, even in summer. "Bring a canopy as the sites do not have shade," advises a camper.
Access roads: Radium Campground features "an established campground with priceless access at the river. Campground is small which means it won't ever be swarmed with people overnight, but the road to the camp and lot is shared by many river rafting touring guides," notes Marasha.
Tips for camping with families
Pool alternatives: "We've stayed at the Steamboat Springs KOA multiple times over the past couple years for many reasons. It's close enough to downtown Steamboat, right on the Yampa, and has plenty of things to do for the whole family. There is a small pool, updated miniature golf course, trike rentals and the Yampa running through the campground," shares Tanner S.
