John Martin Reservoir State Park provides prairie camping in eastern Colorado's shortgrass ecosystem. The park sits at approximately 3,800 feet elevation near the Arkansas River. Summer temperatures frequently exceed 95°F with limited natural shade, while winds can reach 30+ mph across the open terrain.
What to do
Fishing access: Point Campground offers proximity to prime fishing spots. "We were able to drive our car into the wildlife area where you could park very close to the water and post up all day. People were walking down to the water to fish from the camp spots," notes Diana H.
Sandy beach exploration: Find secluded beach areas for swimming and relaxation during summer months. "We drove across the dam and found some awesome sandy spots on the water. Dispersed camping was also available there. We posted up all day and had a blast playing in the water with our dog. Hardly anyone around," reports Diana H.
Stargazing opportunities: The open landscape creates ideal conditions for night sky viewing. "Low light pollution," mentions Tad C., making this an excellent spot for amateur astronomers and those seeking to experience the dark skies of eastern Colorado.
What campers like
Solitude and quiet: Campers frequently mention the peaceful atmosphere at Mapes Lakeview RV Campground. "Brandy was very kind to us and we stayed for 1 night passing through. It was nice to be able to shower and get a quiet night to relax and sleep in," shares Monica T.
Spectacular sunsets: The unobstructed horizon provides remarkable evening views. "These spots have some of the best views for the sunset," states Diana H. about the Point Campground locations.
Affordable rates: Budget-conscious campers appreciate the reasonable pricing structure. "It was really windy, I enjoyed that. The lake view and rocky shores were beautiful. Oh! And it was reasonable. $20 I believe," mentions Brandon F.
What you should know
Weather preparation: Eastern Colorado camping requires planning for variable conditions. "The breeze at night kept us cool and didn't get very hot until after 10am," notes Diana H., while Doug W. cautions about generators in summer: "During the summer the sun will be unrelenting. I have no doubt on a hot summer weekend, the sound of generators will be very annoying."
Water availability: Bring sufficient water supplies when staying at Point Campground. "No water so bring your own or you'll have to go fill up at the lake hasty one," advises Diana H. Another camper confirms: "closest water is at Hasty campsite 10 minute drive away."
Insect protection: Bug repellent is essential equipment. "Mosquitos can drain a cow in 15 minutes. Bring Deep Woods Off," warns Tad C. Sarah G. concurs: "We come to this reservoir all the time! But it's covered in bugs... they are just annoying! Takes me a good hour after each trip to vacuum they all up out of the camper."
Tips for camping with families
Supply restocking: Limited on-site shopping options make advance planning important. "We went and got more ice on our second day at the bait shop right outside the park down the school road," mentions Diana H., highlighting available emergency supplies.
Reservation planning: Avoid disappointment by securing spots early. "This is a by reservation only campground... Arrived at 7pm after hours and they only way to make a day of reservation was to use their online system," shares Dexter I., warning about the challenges of last-minute bookings.
Alternative yurt camping: While dedicated yurt camping near La Junta, Colorado is limited, Sportsman's RV Park & Horse Motel offers family-friendly accommodations. "Was a great family friendly environment and pet friendly... Would recommend them without hesitation," reports Fred G.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: For RV camping, consider specific locations based on amenities needed. "We camped here in mid May during the week. We were one of only 5 campers in the entire campground. It is dry camping so come prepared," advises Doug W.
Dumping facilities: Plan for waste management before arrival. "One side note, if you need a dump station there is one in the Hasty campground also in the park. It has 4 lanes but it does not have water of any kind so you do not have the ability to wash your tanks," notes Doug W.
Spacing considerations: Sites offer privacy despite the open landscape. "Closest campsite was about 100 feet away," mentions Tad C., providing useful information about the layout for those seeking space between neighboring campers.
